What Can I Do To Reduce My Dogs Shedding

What dog food would you use to reduce shedding?

Dogs shed twice a year. They shed to get rid of the winter coat and grow in the summer coat. They shed again to lose the summer coat and grow in the winter coat. Adding a supplement with Linoleic acid in it will help some. Look at the labels of Omega Fatty Acids or Essential Fatty Acids, or just get one of those so-called shed-stop supplements. Remember, it will only help some.

The Main Thing you have to do us to brush your dog daily when it is shedding. Weekly bathing will hasten the shedding along. So if you bathe once a week AND brush daily, you'll be through with the shedding cycle sooner than usual.

Shedding is often accompanied by a little dandruff. This is nothing to worry about. Dead skin cells are shed along with the dead hair.

If your dog has a coat like a Lab's then a Zoom Groom is a great tool to have. If your dog has a longish border collie coat, then use a slicker brush. Look for brushes at http://www.kvvet.com

Your dog's shedding sounds completely normal to me. He just needs a lot more brushing. Make it a part of your daily routine.

How can I reduce my dog's shedding?

If your second dog is losing hair in tufts, perhaps she has a food sensitivity? Food sensitivity manifests itself as gas, teary eyes, itchy skin and excess shedding. Check your current dog food for ingredients that are common aggravators of food sensitivities including: corn, chicken by-products or perhaps even chicken itself...

If these ingredients are present in your current food, it is possible that your food is causing runny eyes. I would recommend switching him to a diet free of the above mentioned ingredients such as Natural Choice Herring Rice and Potato formula. This formula is great for dogs that have food sensitivities because it contains no corn, wheat, chicken or chicken by-products.

Alternatively, if you are feeding a premium dog food that doesn't contain any of those ingredients, you might need to up the ante. My next recommendation would be Natural Choice Grain Free/Limited Ingredient. Limited ingredient diets are important for dogs with allergies because it limits the number of ingredients going into their system. Plus, NC limited ingredient diets only use novel proteins, proteins that dogs have not come into contact with before.

Both of those formulas are great for maintaining healthy skin and coat, due to high levels of omega 3 & 6 fatty acids which are found in healthy oils. These fatty acids coupled with zinc for absorption make the Nutro products the only formulas that guarantee and improvement in skin and coat.

Hope that helps :)

How do you reduce shedding by your dog?

Ask your Vet about some 3V Caps Skin Formulation for skin and coat. It has Omega 3, Vit A, D and E which work together to optimize condition of skin and coat. Also, when bathing use a bathing glove to remove excess hair in the bath. Brush a few times a day. Don't over bathe and when you do bathe use a shampoo formula that does not dry the coat out, like aloe and oatmeal blend.
I don't know what you feed your dog, but sometimes diet can effect how much shedding occurs. Because of the mix breeds in your dog, both breeds you mention he is mixed with are shedders that sometimes shed profusely.
You didn't mention what he eats. Some foods are also designed for skin and coat and help to lessen shedding. Nothing will eliminate it altogether.

How can i reduce the shedding hairs of my dog?

As you can not absolutely stop the dog from shedding much like you can not stop your nails from growing, there are some way you can improve the situation.A healthy balance diet will give it nice shiny coat and hair will not matt and fall that much.Regular bath with a good glove rub will do similar thing.Regular use of Furminator Large Tool for Long Hair is excellent way to remove loose hair and keep them from getting everywhere in your apartment. I use it once a week on my german shedder oops shepherd dog and difference is noticeable. I generally sit with a medium size plastic bag and do not stop till it is half full! Imagine finding that much hair floating around the house and settling on everything.During summer, when the shedding is at highest, I recommend a full haircut from a professional. Not only it is a life saver for the dog during sweltering heat but I do not have to worry about hairballs for close to three months.

What can I do to reduce the shedding of my rat terriers?

Those ideas are excellent. I would also add some dietary considerations... like adding EFA supplements and vitamin E to their diet.. and anything else that keeps their skin from drying out, especially if they're indoors during winter with the heat on. EFA are in big soft gel capsules; you can hide them in lumps of cheese or something to get them down, or pierce them and squeeze the oil onto their food. Obviously fresh water all the time, on demand as well.

Daily brushing will help a lot. I use a knee-hi nylon stocking over my slicker brush (poke the teeth through the nylon) and just turn it inside out and bag up the hair after a brushing. Might want to use a softer brush on your ratties, though; a slicker's metal teeth might not feel that great to them.

I use Allermyl shampoo on my dogs; vets sell it and the vet supply websites probably do, too. It's spendy but very gentle for dry skin. My vet says to bathe my dog weekly but he's just miserable from the post bath itching (just like me!), so I can't bear to bathe him that often.

Healthy skin sheds less than dry or otherwise unhealthy skin, so this could help. Good luck. I know a couple of ratties and they're very generous shedders. Good luck and kiss your dogbabies on the head for me.

What can I do to reduce my dog`s shedding and dandruff problem?

I used to work at a grooming salon as a bather. The product i found most useful was the "FURminator". This is a really creamy shampoo/conditioner and it comes with a special deshedding tool. The brush actually has tiny razor blades in between the bristles that pull all that loose hair out. The shampoo/conditioner is not an immediate fix. After you use it like 3 times you will begin to notice a difference. Since the conditioner is so creamy it will help with the dry skin too. This product can be a bit pricey so shop around. I know that Petsmart carries it for sure.

BUT your dog could have dandruff because he is allergic to components in shampoos, so if it persist with different shampoos, you may have to switch to a hypo-allergenic shampoo. Also when you brush him, you should only be applying so much pressure. A little trick is to see how hard you can brush you own arm without making scratches and that's how hard to brush.

Good luck!

Is there anyway to stop my dog or reduce it from shedding so much.?

First stop vet. Excessive shedding can be caused by medical problems, for example thyroid disorders. If everything checks clear, I'd recommend a change of food. Poor quality food can also cause excessive shedding. Here's my article on finding a high quality food.

Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, and Cannidae.

There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:

A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.

A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.

A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.

A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.

There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

What's Really In Pet Food

How can I reduce the amount of shedding my dog does?

Labs are known for being heavy shedding dogs....
try brushing more with a KONG ZOOM GROOM - in circular motion..

also feeding a better quality food will help
if you are getting your food at a grocery store or wal mart - the food is 80% the problem (breed - 20%).... these foods are loaded with fillers and have comparitivly little nutrion.. also the allergens and chemicals in them create skin problems.....

AVOID - soy, corn, beef, pork, by-products, BHT, BHA, wheat.....

first ingredients should always be CHICKEN MEAL or LAMB MEAL with RICE second....

good foods are ONLY available at pet food supply stores and even then not all foods sold at pet food stores are actually good - you have to read the labels... they are more costly BUT because you feed less you save in the long run (also less poops and less health problems)

NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE has a guarantee to improve skin and coat....but if you are in CANADA - I recommend NUTRAM even more so...

My dog is shedding so bad what can i do?

Corgis naturally shed a LOT. They area double coated breed. Right now, the best thing you can do is bring her to a groomer for a bath and forced-air blowdrying. The blowdrying will blow out a lot of the dead/loose fur. It's not like a regular human blowdryer. After that, every day brush her with a grooming rake for at least 10 minutes, apying attention to the butt and hindquarters area. I find that's where a lot of the fur comes from. She should be professionally bathed every 4 to six weeks. You can do it at home, but beware that the hair that comes out from bathing will get everywhere in the tub, drain, everything. If you do end up bathing at home make sure to rinse VERY well to get any soap out. Leftover soap will cause itching and flaking. Brush and dry thoroughly. Don't use a hot blowdryer on your dog, it could burn her. If you must, use it on the low or cool setting, brushing through the coat while holding the dryer 6 to 8 inches from skin. Provide a quality food for your dog such as Nutro or even Pro Plan (one of the better less expensive brands). This will help keep her skin and coat healthy and reduce shedding due to dry skin. Also make sure she always has plenty of fresh water and daily walks to keep her whole system healthy. Shedding will lessen in the winter months but it won't stop. It will increase once it gets warmer again because she will be "blowing" her winter fur for a summer fur.

Invest in a quality brush or shedding tool. Brushing your pet 1–2 times per week will drastically reduce shedding and it will make them look more shiny and fluffy. Furthermore, you can improve your pets diet. When Quality Food Does Wonders:Skin & Coat Health: Ever wonder how the pets on television have such pristine fur? Furthermore, foods with adequate omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect to reduce itching and other irritations.Beach Body: Visit any gym and ask what is the secret dietary ingredient that stimulates muscle growth. Protein is essential to form new skin cells, grow hair, build muscle tissue, and more. It also assists in creating body chemicals like hormones and enzymes that are needed for normal function. Quality protein sources to look for include chicken, beef, eggs, lamb, fish, and meat meals.Less Expensive: You read that right! The vitamins and minerals found in every bag of dog food work together to keep your dog’s immune system and metabolism functioning normally. Because your pet will have a stronger immune system, allowing for faster recovery from illness and injures, you will save thousands of dollars in vet bills. Obesity will lead to health risks and without adequate levels of vitamins and minerals, your pet would eventually become ill.
