What Causes Red Swollen Painful Big Toe That Has Not Been Injured

Why is my toe still swollen and red?

About two months ago a chair leg landed on my toe. My toe popped and it became bruised. The bruise disappeared in a few days and my toe became red and swollen. It hurt for about two weeks while I walked. The pain has gone away and it doesn't hurt anymore. However, it is still red and swollen and burns occasionally. The little toe (right beside injured toe) wasn't hurt at all and now it is swollen too. I heard you can't barely walk if your toe is broken... so I know its not that. Why is it still swollen? And why is my little toe swollen and red too?

Why is my big toe red, a little swollen, hot, painful?

Without being able to actually look at it and examine it first hand, it sounds as though you have an infected toe. The redness, swelling, pain and heat would indicate infection most likely. It may be unrelated to the toenail fungus that you suffer from, or it may be related. The only way to determine that is to have it checked out by a doctor, preferably a specialist (Podiatrist).

The other thing it could be is an injury. However, I am guessing that if you stubbed it on something, or it got stepped on or injured in any way in the recent past, that you would have mentioned it. If you did not mention it and actually did sustain an injury or some trauma to that toe, then it is possible that this is the reason for the swelling, redness, pain and heat.

If you can take an NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drug) like Motrin (Ibuprofen) or Aleve (Naproxen Sodium) then take some. I would also recommend applying ice to the toe for 15 minutes and then taking the ice off for the rest of the hour and the applying it again for 15 minutes and repeating this process until you have to go to work, school or to bed. The ice will help reduce the inflammation as will the NSAID. It is possible that if you do this for a few days it will resolve itself, but if it gets worse or does not get better within a few days of the NSAID and Ice treatment, then get to the doc.

What is the fluid in a swollen, injured joint?

Swollen joints happen once there is a rise of fluid within the tissues that surround the joints. Joint swelling is common with differing kinds of inflammatory disease, infections, and injuries. A swollen joint could be a symptom of the subsequent health conditions:Osteoarthritis (OA). OA is that the "wear-and-tear" inflammatory disease that sometimes happens with aging or when injury. With OA, there is a sporting down of the gristle that cushions the ends of the bones. OA could cause joint swelling in those joints that bear weight over a period, like knees, hips, feet, and spine. aside from the pain within the affected swollen joint, you always don't feel sick or tired. Autoimmune disease (RA). RA is associate degree inflammatory inflammatory disease that may happen at any age -- even in young kids. RA causes painful, stiff, and swollen joints. Usually, RA affects hands, feet, and knees, however it can even have an effect on most joints and different elements of the body. RA symptoms will interfere with daily activities.Gout . Urarthritis typically strikes suddenly, with severe joint pain, swelling, warmth, and redness, typically within the great toe (about five hundredth of cases). Urarthritis causes a painful, swollen joint that is thus severe that the load of bed sheets will cause distress.

My 7 yr old son's second toe is infected, red, swollen and very painful. What do I do about it?

My brother had a chronically infected toe for most of his 8th year. In addition to seeking prompt medical care you can try what our dr recommended. Regularly soak the toe in hot salt water, as hot as he can stand it without scalding. This should help the body fight the infection by raising the temp and salinity as well as increasing blood flow (and white blood cells). It will also help reduce tenderness and swelling. Change the water frequently, keep the toe clean and absolutely the advice about marking the infection line, seeing a dr and getting an antibiotic are all accurate too.Your son may need to have the toe lanced open, debrided, and/ or he might lose the nail. There's no way to tell ahead of time. It's not a huge deal if he loses a toenail, it will just grow back. The debriding process is usually done with a local anesthetic so aside from the initial injection that part doesn't hurt.  However after there will be some tenderness. Be prepared to keep him home for a day or two to keep the toe elevated.Follow your dr's aftercare instructions. For my brother it was no swimming, no bare feet or sandals, finish the whole course of antibiotics and the saline soaks. He hated it but the infection finally cleared up without permanent damage.

What do I do about a swollen toe with blood and puss coming out?

If you are young, perhaps the possibility of the following may be low:

Are you diabetic? Young people can be diabetic too. So, the question may apply to you. Check it out. The blood circulation to toes is poor for diabetic patients.

If not diabetic, then you have infected and compounded the problem with self treatment. Blood clot should have been drilled out by a doc to ease the pressure. Don't think of a Black and Decker type of a drill - LOL - it is really quite sophisticated. It is too late now.

Antibiotic, or an ointment that reduces the inflammation is to be contemplated. Doc may adise you to dress it with iso-propyl alcohol and bandage it to keep the bacteria from forming further problem.

Obviously the puss is due to dead white corpuscles that has fought the invation of bacteria and died. There is a war going on down there.

Why is my pinky toe swollen?

Here is how you evaluate body symptoms. In fact, this is what medical practitioners do:

Typical Causes:
1) Infection due to a cut or bacteria from nail?
2) Broken bone?

How to Evalute/Inspection for infection:
1) Is the area painful to touch? (Infection)
2) Is the area abnormally warm to the touch (Infection)
3) Is the swollen area soft or hard (Infection Absess)

Serious Symptoms to watch:
1) Is the core body temperature rising?

How to Evaluate/Inspect for Broken Bone
1) Is the area painful and swollen but no obvious infection symptoms?
2) Nature of the injury?

How to treat typical Infections:
- If source of the infection can be found, such as with an infected nail do to bacteria, then you need to open the area. Most of the time this can be done by simply gently pulling back the skin. If you notice a white substance (white blood cells) coming from the area, then this is normally enough to allow the area to drain.

- If source of the infection cannot be found or the specific wound cannot be opened, then external anti-biotics might need to employed. Also, if core body temperature goes up, then bloodwork might need to be done to determine the nature of the infection and the extect of how it has spread.

How to treat Broken Bone:
- Isolate bone area and tape off. A popcicle with some tape works best most of the time for smaller limbs. For larger limbs, a sling or cast is required.

Hope this helps!! Good Luck! :-)

What should I do about swollen red tender pointer (second) toe?

I am not a doctor. Is there pain? Was there an injury? This is sometimes good, but not for you because of previous problems influencing this problem, but you can try it.Symptom Checker from WebMD. Check Your Medical Symptoms. This is for feet problems, it says gout or arthritis (13-14), but once again previous medical condition.Search by Symptom -- FamilyDoctor.orgMost importantly, and probably most correctly:I AGREE WITH THE PODIATRISTespecially where he says that your blood is pooling in your toes and to put them above your head.I answered this question, not because I have any idea what I'm saying, but because someone asked me and the notifications button was bothering me.

2 year olds big toe is bright red and very swollen, I don't know what is wrong with it?

If it starts turning purple, take her to an ER.

You say red and swollen, for about a week now.

is it just the tip of the toe or is it the whole toe?

is the swollen red area hot/extra warm to touch?

there are many reasons this can occur apart frm cuts/bites/injuries.

gout, cellulitis are the main culprits for red, swollen, shiny skin areas especially in extremities eg legs/feet/arms/hands.

GOUT - acute inflammatory arthritis—a red, tender, hot, swollen joint. The metatarsal-phalangeal joint at the base of the big toe is the most commonly affected. It is caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the blood which crystallize and are deposited in joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues.
This can occur for a number of reasons, including diet, genetic predisposition etc.

Cellulitis: is a diffuse inflammation[1] of connective tissue with severe inflammation of dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin. The typical symptoms of cellulitis is an area which is red, hot, and tender.Cellulitis can be caused by normal skin flora or by exogenous bacteria, and often occurs where the skin has previously been broken: cracks in the skin, cuts, blisters, burns, insect bites, surgical wounds, intravenous drug injection or sites of intravenous catheter insertion. Skin on the face or lower legs is most commonly affected by this infection, though cellulitis can occur on any part of the body.

Just a couple of ideas of what it could be, really though, it could be anything including a bite that you cannot see due to the redness and swelling.

If it starts to turn purple, go to the ER as it does indicate that blood circulation has decreased/been compromised, otherwise get the doctor to check it out at the appointment.

Good luck

My big toe hurts soo bad...i didn't injure it PLEASE HELP ME?

The edge of your nail is very thin and sharp and can press into the skin of the toe causing pain, when it breaks the skin it is referred to as ingrown. By keeping the nail length even with the end of the toe, and using a straight across cut you can limit this happening. For now, trim the nail as described. Get hold of a metal nail file (because they are very thin) and gently run under the nail from center to edge and carefully lift the edge up as you work out. This will be a bit painful for you right now. When you get to the end (you will have only been using the tip) run the rough body of the file up under the nail and out. There will have been some filings and scaly buildup removed. Do this one or two more times. Just for now to relieve the pressure, take a nail clipper and turn it vertical to the nail and place it centered on the nail and make a small clip (not to the quick). This will relieve the pressure at the sides of the nail for now. Now soak your feet (or yourself) in hot soapy water. Pour a little alcohol or witch hazel on the toe. Keep nail clipped to end of toe, file straight and file under edge 1x per month.
