Why is there no BBC Sport channel on TV?

I started working at BBC Sport in 2012 - just after the London Olympics in fact. The BBC had a very successful games with more coverage than ever before which brought a whole host of sports to the, normally Football obsessed, Great British Public. The result was a newfound knowledge that the sporting world is vast.In the days after the Games, the idea of a BBC sport channel was mooted. It would specialise in “minority” sports. It would also give additional broadcasting space for the portfolio of sports already shown by the corporation. It never happened.Partially, because the BBC is a Public Service (general) Broadcaster, and dedicating an entire channel to sport was less acceptable to the top brass than a news channel. Then there’s the case of extra cost - not least in the rights to broadcast sporting events. Another factor was that a channel dedicated to minority sports would not have the same audience draw as, for example, BT Sport with their Premier League football or other top-line events. Also at the time, the BBC was recovering from a big problem, which I won’t go into, and was in the midst of re-structuring at the top. That didn’t help.Since 2012, BBC Budgets have become increasingly scrutinised and made to go even further, partially due to Governmental interference! The Corporation has even closed a channel instead of opening new ones.So for the time being, the BBC will continue to broadcast sports the way it always has done, but in the face of increasing competition from specialist broadcasters who can easily justify showing nothing but sport all day long, it remains to be seen how long they, and ITV, C4, C5 et al can maintain this stance.

When will the BBC launch a 4K channel?

4K is one of the main types of new ultra high definition broadcasting formats being developed by the BBC and others. It will have about eight times the resolution of SD (standard definition) and four times that of our current HD (high definition) formats. The pixels will be so small as to be effectively invisible to the human eye.Commissioners from broadcasters including the BBC and BSkyB are already encouraging independent TV production companies to make their programmes in 4K. These have already included natural history series like Shark and Life Story; drama, such as BBC One's The Coroner, rugby and football matches for BT Sport, and golfing coverage filmed for Sky.However, 4K isn't broadcast in the UK at present and there is no announced date, or even a ball park estimate, of when it will be. The Beeb doesn’t even have the right equipment to send 4K signals to the general populace. Once they do, broadcasters such as Sky, Freesat and Virgin will be more likely to invest in the technology necessary to convert and relay those signals through home set-top boxes. It will not help that one of the financial backers of ultra high definition development is the European Union. Funds available to the BBC from the EU for research and development are likely to stop after Brexit.Nevertheless, while a station broadcasting in 4K is still a very long way off it's expected that UHD produced content will be available on our TVs a lot sooner via the BBC iPlayer and other streaming services.
