What are your impressions of women's Australian Football League (AFLW) to date?
Making it a national league has had an effect on the technical aspects of the game but everything else is very impressive.If you watched the demonstration game last year, the quality was incredible, but since that time the stars of those sides (Melbourne and Western Bulldogs) have been spread throughout the competition courtesy of the draft, and many inexperienced players have been added to teams.While there are a lot of ball handling errors, the tackling and commitment is equal to the men. I regularly flinch while watching the women go at it. They don’t hold back at all.The only other thing I’ve noticed is that the umpires are being quite forgiving, and I find that a little bit condescending. I would ask the umpires to be just as strict as they are on the men, especially for holding the ball decisions.In general, you have to applaud the AFL. So far, I think they’d all be giving each other hi-fives at AFL headquarters because it’s been a great start to the first season. I don’t know many footy fans who haven’t watched at least one an AFLW game, and I’ve watched a couple.I’m confident it’s going to rise in quality quite dramatically each year so let’s hope the support and coverage continues.
