What College/university Has The Best Photography Programs In South Carolina

University of North Carolina at Wilmington?

There's nothing wrong with being close to the beach - a lot of people in the US live and work close to the beach and aren't "bad" because of that. Remind mom that "beach season" is exactly opposite "school season" - you won't be doing very much surfing or sunbathing in Wilmington Sept-April. (unless you're a die hard surfer in which case you made your decision already)

For many majors (several that UNCW excels in) being close to the ocean is all but essential. They don't do much hands-on marine biology out in Kansas for example. It's useful for some majors to be near the NC Aquarium. For others to be near the ports. If you want to study the business of those ports, UNCW is the place to be.

But, NC State is in the state capital and that lends itself ideally to majors like poli sci. The state archives are in Raleigh too. Not to mention, their might be a few more decent part-time job ops in Raleigh than in Wilmington. RTP is there and lends itself to some seriously valuable internship possibilities in a large number of fields.

UNCW is a regional master's tier 1 and #12 in the southern region among master's colleges.

NC State is a national university tier 1 and #88 of all nationals.

UNCW and NC State are apples and oranges. UNCW is a good apple and NC State is a good orange; but they aren't the same class of school.

NC State is in Raleigh - that's not exactly a long way from the beach but not really close either. There are plenty of other distractions in and around Raleigh though. There will be distractions available just about anywhere and if there are none readily available, your classmates will create some.

Wilmington isn't known as "a beach town" - it's a commercial port. We don't lay out to tan on the docks. It's not far to some nice beach locations though and it's only about 1.5 hours to Myrtle Beach and all of the distractions you could possibly enjoy.

You might not want to pick two of the top schools in the state as your only choices. A good back-up usually is one that's not so difficult to get into.

Add: UNC-Charlotte is a tier 4 national. Not even close to either of the above mentioned. Not a "bad" school - but definitely not equal to a tier 1 in any category.
