How do you want other people to treat you ?If you want to be respected, you need to look respectable. That does not mean that you cannot ever wear a shear top, but you should probably select better places to do it than at school.Many women are understandably unhappy when men “ogle” them, especially their chests. The classic comment made by those women is “my eyes are up here”.If the woman is wearing respectable clothes, the man will usually be deservedly embarrassed and apologise.If she is wearing a shear top, she is more likely to get the response “if you don't want people to look, don't put them on display”. If they both have a sense of humor, a bit of laughing will resolve everything. If not, there are likely to be hurt feelings and possible escalation.I have a 12 year old daughter and will doubtless have conversations like this with her in the next few years. I don't want her to be ashamed of her body, but I do want her to understand that even if she SHOULD be able to walk around naked, juggling solid gold balls, without any risk, she actually can't.The first, most important lesson that any parent can teach their child is that life isn't fair.On the other hand, if you are going to a party with some friends, or if you are performing at a talent show, that shear top might be absolutely perfect… a white bra under a more opaque shear top will work especially well if you have pale skin and there are any black lights - the shear will hide everything until the lights go down and then you'll be a disembodied bra ! You could even paint the bra so that it looks like each cup is a spiral or a hand…It's not about whether it is anyone else's business. It's about understanding the reality that your appearance affects how other people perceive you. This combination originated in yoga class, and eventually migrated to street wear. Interestingly, dancers use the same form of dress in the dance studio, but tend not to wear dance clothes in public as often as yoga students wear exercise clothes in public.I do find it to be quite revealing. Stretchy, clingy yoga clothes are perfect for the yoga studio, it seems too revealing for anywhere else.I expect to hear some indignant comments about how this is a great form of dress, it’s only your perception of what looks appropriate…”. In my experience women use this excuse for revealing forms of dress oftener than men do.Here is my test for how appropriate this is: how comfortable would you feel to see a man wearing a clinging, stretchy pair of tights throughout the day? Right-it is a little too revealing for exposure outside of the yoga studio. No one wants to see body parts outlined in spandex. It makes me long for the recently past days when women would tie a little ballet skirt around their tights.Just because it is technically legal doesn’t make it tasteful. And it certainly is not gentlemanly or ladylike. AND I don’t want to hear about how prudish this is….it is just fine to maintain a level of public decorum.
