What Countries Is The World Series Popular In

Do any other countries take part in the American World Series? If not, why is it called the “world” series?

Unless you count Canada no. It became the World Series the way that a lot of things end up with a name that isn’t exactly accurate. According to,” A Comprehensive History of the World Series by Baseball Almanac “ this is how the name came to be.“. . .Although the "Fall Classic" as we know it didn't begin until 1903, Major League Baseball had several versions of a post-season championship series before that. In 1884, the Providence Grays of the National League outplayed the New York Metropolitan Club of the American Association in a three game series for what was originally called "The Championship of the United States." Several newspapers penned the Grays as "World Champions" and the new title stuck. . . “At that time the name wasn’t incorrect, the USA was the only country with true professional leagues. As Americans traveled the worlds they spread the game so that today there are professional leagues all over the world but the name hasn’t and isn’t likely to change

Can countries other than the USA participate in the World Series?

Yes, Canada. If other countries wanted to field teams in the national or American league then they would be welcome in the World Series too but I think logistically and expense wise it would be a problem. Imagine the Dodgers playing a game in London, followed by a game in New York and then one in Tokyo…..And yes I agree with your underlying idea that ‘World Series’ is an inappropriate name and if it somehow deeply offended people like Washington Redskins then out of political correctness the name would have been changed, but I don’t see anyone hurt by this. If other countries want to be silly and have their own ‘World Series’ I am sure people here in the US wouldn’t mind….Curious, do all the teams in the world play in the world cup?? Probably not, though I agree that there are a lot more countries playing than in the world series of US and Canada and that that probably has to do with some countries not playing football:National team appearances in the FIFA World Cup - WikipediaI see India and Pakistan, for example, according to that link, don’t play in the world cup….

How many countries compete in the World Series ( Baseball ) ?

The term, "World Series" is very misleading in that the final seven game series plus the playoffs do not include members from every country in the world nor will it happen in the near future. A proper definition of the championship series would be something like, "Major League Championship Series".

Although each team in baseball is represented by a fair number of players from many countries I've yet to see anyone from the Isle of Crete, for example, on any MLB roster.

Thinking back to baseball when only 8 teams from each league represented all there was in the USA, it hardly seems reasonable that the words, "World Champions", should have appeared on the winning teams rings considering that most of the world back then didn't even play the game.

Even today with the WBC which is supposed to encompass the world community, it still doesn't come close to representing the "world" of baseball. The reality is, there probably has never really been a true "World Champion", crowned since the birth of baseball.

Do other countries watch the world series/superbowl?

Yes a certain amount probably do watch it.

Why is the world series called the world series, when its only americans and canadians who participate?

I know the correct answer. Many years ago, it was sponsored by a paper called News of the World. They used the moniker to call it the World Series. The sponsorship has disappeared but the name remained.

It is stupid to market it to the rest of the World as some global competition as nothing could be further from the truth.

As if people in Australia, Ireland, Germany, France or Scotland pay attention to Baseball. Truth is nobody outside the USA watches Baseball.

Here's an example. A US Basketball team was playing an exhibtion match in Munich many years ago. One player, Chris Barkley was his name I think, complained to hotel staff that the World Series was not on TV in Germany. He was peeved that he had to phone home to keep up with the score.

Now if the roles were reversed, could German people watch a Bundersliga match in a hotel in America?

In conclusion, it's stupid to call it a World Series as it is for a North American domestic competition. It's certainly not like Football.

What country has won the most little league world series championships?

The United States has won 32 through 2012 (although only 21 of those came in tournaments in which international teams have competed). Chinese Taipei is second with 17.

Why is the World Series called the "World Series" if the games aren't really played on an international scale, and Canada is the only other country involved with the MLB?

The World Series was first played in 1903 between the champions of two rival leagues, the National League and the American League. At the time, calling the championship the World Series made sense because that was the name that had been used in the 1880’s to describe the series between the champions of the National League and the American Association (no relation to the League). The organizers found it to be a great name.Of course, that just pushes us to the next level: Why was the 1880’s series called the World Series? Marketing, of course. It made the event sound more important to make it the baseball championship of the world. Sold more tickets, got more press. Story as old as time.Over time, the term World Series has changed in meaning to simply mean “baseball championship,” to the point that usually, neither the World part nor the Series part is true. For instance, the Little League World Series is a single-elimination tournament, although it has worldwide scope. The College World Series is a double-elimination tournament between university teams. Etc. If you see a sporting event called the “world series,” chances are it’s a baseball championship. That process is normal; once a word enters the language as a single piece, its origins no longer inform its use.

Why doesn't World Series in baseball include other countries? Is there an international baseball series?

EDIT: I had originally said that since the Toronto Blue Jays are based in Canada, then technically, there is one other country included. But then I forgot: For them to be included in the World Series, they have to actually get to the World Series. They’ve not done this since 1993.But the main reason other countries (like Cuba, Japan, Korea, and so on) aren’t included in the World Series is a matter of logistics.Baseball in other countries has its own leagues, commissioners, rules, etc. In order to include the best teams from these leagues in the World Series, there would need to be extra negotiations, CBAs and such.Say you get those out of the way. Awesome, but then there’s another issue: Baseball is a long sport. Players start practicing for the season in February, and the MLB postseason wraps up in November. Add extra teams in the mix, and suddenly, there’s a chance that a World Series team might get little to no off time to recover from the grind before they have to get ready for the next season. And then there’s the usual hassle with travel, passports and such. There is an alternative though. The World Baseball Classic.Every four years, the best professional players from all over the world are selected to play for their country’s national team in a round robin tournament to determine the best team in the world. For what it’s worth, I LOVE the WBC. Definitely check it out next time it comes around.
