What is it like to live in Polk County or Lakeland Florida?
Lakeland is very diverse.... Most people who realy dont know Lakeland will say it is one of three things: 1) Large Homeless population in Northern Lakeland 2) Very Urban 3) Very redneck-- (country)... and it is in areas (predominantly Northern Lakeland)... but the South side of Lakeland (near Publix HQ) is extremely nice and a new "desirable" place to live that people are just discovering.... Where Publix corporate offices are is a industrial area bordering the airport ( big but not commercial yet!) just to the Southeast is a new mall area Lakeside and in that area there is new housing and lots of other shops/resturants coming. Downtown Lakeland used to be a real pit but now it is really nice and vibrant. There are alot of well Lakes in the area that are scenic and the lake down by Florida Southern University is fabulous for excersize/ walking. Lakeland is situated halfway between Tampa and Orlando ... you can be in either in 30-45 minutes, and it is about 90 minutes from either coast (maybe a bit longer to Atlantic)... Publix and the Jenkins family almost own the city and alot of the population works for Publix in some capacity. Also check out Plant City... 15 minutes East... very small town feel. just stay away from North Lakeland unless it is very North...

Should the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County merge?
The city of Miami is part of Miami-Dade county, as are Coral Gables, North Miami Beach, Aventura, Homestead, etc. If you're referring to one whole city being called Miami-Dade that is not possible. There are many other cities, which are part of Miami-Dade county that are not part of the city of Miami. Besides, the tri-county area (Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach) is unofficially labeled as the "Miami Metropolitan Area".

Hialeah is an incorporated city within Dade County. Hialeah has its own government and police force. Can you buy EMLA cream online or over the counter at a pharmacy? or is it a prescription item?
EMLA is an over the counter product in some countries like Canada, Australia, and I believe Britain. In the U.S. however, it is not. Have you considered trying lidocaine or something similar OTC. Perhaps you could have your regular doctor get your a script or tell the people at the hospital you refuse to get the test unless they get orders from the physician on staff to numb it properly. You have a right to request this you know. Peace
What is it like to live in Miami-Dade, Florida?
It's hot, no one speaks English (and I'm Cuban so it's not like I'm biased here, I genuinely realize that if I didn't speak Spanish here my life would suck), it's overcrowded and it is very expensive. It is not worth it. Live somewhere else. This city is constant stress, constant traffic (like rush hour is 6:30 am-10 am and 3:30 pm-7:30 pm) and way overpriced. Expect to pay up to $1000 (and that's on the cheap end) for a tiny studio. Car insurance rates are insane. There is crime, theft and people are really freaking rude. Like REALLY rude. My household income of my husband and I is well over 6 figures and I still find this city way too expensive (we don't live above our means though which most people in this city do… and they all live paycheck to paycheck) It's a perpetual summer, just like the worst types of summer where it's so humid you can't breathe. I mean I could go on. Unless you make about $300K a year this isn't a comfortable city to live in. There are beautiful parts of town of course but you'll be too busy working to pay for the cost of living or stuck in traffic to enjoy any of it. Live somewhere else and come visit is my suggestion.
