What is a county in the USA?

Thanks for the A2A!A county is a geographical region of a country used for administrative or other purposes in certain modern nations. Its etymology derives from the Old French term, conté or cunté and could denote a jurisdiction in mainland Europe, under the sovereignty of a count (earl) or a viscount.[2] The modern French is comté, and its equivalents in other languages are contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, Gau, etc. (cf. conte, comte, conde, Graf). When the Normans conquered England, they brought the term with them. The Saxons had already established the districts that became the historic counties of England, calling them shires[3] (many county names derive from the name of the county town with the word "shire" added on: for example, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire).[4] The Vikings introduced the term earl (from Old Norse, jarl) to the British Isles. Thus, "earl" and "earldom" were taken as equivalent to the continental use of "count" and "county". So the later-imported term became a synonym for the native English word scir ([ʃiːr]) or, in Modern English, shire. Since a shire was an administrative division of the kingdom, the term "county" evolved to designate an administrative division of national government in most modern uses.A county may be further subdivided into districts, hundreds, townships or other administrative jurisdictions within the county. A county usually, but not always, contains cities, towns, townships, villages, or other municipal corporations. Depending on the nation, municipalities may or may not be subject to direct or indirect county control.Outside English-speaking countries, an equivalent of the term "county" is often used to describe sub-national jurisdictions that are structurally equivalent to counties in the relationship they have with their national government; but which may not be administratively equivalent to counties in predominantly English-speaking countries.Cited from Wikipedia.  http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/C...

In NYC, what is the difference between a “county” and a “borough”?

The answer to a question with its origin in Wikipedia is, of course, more Wikipedia:New York City, in the U.S. state of New York, is composed of five boroughs. They are Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. Each borough is coextensive with a county of New York State. The county governments were dissolved when New York City consolidated in 1898, along with all city, town, and village governments within each county. If the boroughs were each independent cities, four of the boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx) would be among the ten most populous cities in the United States; these same boroughs are coextensive with the four most densely populated counties in the United States (New York [Manhattan], Kings [Brooklyn], Bronx, and Queens). The term borough was adopted to describe a form of governmental administration for each of the five fundamental constituent parts of the newly consolidated city in 1898. Under the 1898 City Charter adopted by the New York State Legislature, a "borough" is a municipal corporation that is created when a county is merged with populated areas within it. This system, in which New York City's borough governments are inferior to the powers of the city-wide government, differs significantly from borough forms of government used in Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, in which a borough is an independent level of government, as well as other borough forms used in other states and Greater London.Borough (New York City) - Wikipedia

What is the relationship between district, county, city and state in USA?

The federal (ie national central) government has responsibility for certain areas of government including foreign affairs, defense, and interstate commerce.States are responsible for laws and regulations on pretty much everything else. Most criminal law is created and enforced by states (although when Congress sees a political opportunity it sometimes makes what were state crimes federal crimes).Counties are divisions of states mostly for administrative purposes. Counties (called parishes in Louisiana) have law enforcement services called sheriffs which typically run local jails and provide policing for unincorporated areas, ie, places that don’t belong to a city. Many counties have fire departments also that serve unincorporated areas. Some small cities and towns pay the local county for police and fire services, rather than having their own tiny departments. Coroners and medical examiners and local prosecutors are typically based in counties. Property taxes and public records (births, deaths, marriages, land ownership and sales) are usually maintained by counties. Courts are usually run by counties.Cities are areas that have their own local governments, usually with a mayor and city council. Bigger cities have their own police and fire and sanitation (garbage collection) departments. City laws usually cover relatively small things, like parking. In California, cities have prosecutors that handle misdemeanors; felonies are handled by county district attorneys. There are several types of districts:Any political division that is divided up has districts:States with more than one representative in Congress have congressional districtsMany counties and cities are divided into districts for voting on county supervisors and city councillorsSchool districts run public schools from kindergarten through high school (12th grade). They are usually within one city, sometimes they cover multiple small towns within one county. They are usually funded by the state based on the number of enrolled students, sometimes the number of students who show up for class. There are special districts that manage things like water supply and sewage treatment, mosquito abatement, community colleges, etc. These districts can usually levy taxes on the residents, typically a percentage added on to the city/county/state property or sales tax. Special districts are usually within one county, sometimes one city.

What is it like living in Orange County, California?

As Christine has mentioned, it really depends on which city in Orange County you live. If you live in Laguna Beach, Crystal Cove, or any of those south Orange County Beach cities, you will be surrounded by billionaires who live very opulent lives. If you live more inland in places like Garden Grove, Anaheim, or Westminster, your mileage will vary. As you go along, there will be good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods, but nothing truly dangerous. The one constant no matter where you go is traffic. The traffic is truly an abomination in most parts of Orange County, especially if you live around the major corridors. I recall sitting in traffic any time I got in the car, even to go get groceries. The weather is great, and for me, it was all about the beaches. I never cared much for LA when I lived in Southern California. I found Orange County had just about everything I needed (minus big music venues). You’ve got baseball, and hockey. You’ve got amazing food and beaches. You’ve got Disneyland if you’re into that sort of thing. For me personally, I just could not enjoy living in the sprawl. I didn’t like that everything was at least a 20 minute drive. Walking most places is out of the question. Everything is big streets, and big parking lots. Don’t bother taking the bus unless you have many hours to kill. Many places don’t even have public transit.Current spots that I would recommend living:Any of the beach hamlets if you can afford it: Seal beach, huntington, newport, laguna, etc.Downtown santa ana is nice. Centrally located, nice neighborhoods, and an up and coming night life scene.Same goes for Fullerton. The college there ensures a lively night life in the area. Lots of good neighborhoods, hiking and mountain biking trails, and restaurants.Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo, San Clemente, etc if you work in south Orange County and have the money to afford a decent spot.
