Downton Abbey (TV series): "What's a weekend?": is it historically accurate that British aristocrats in the 1910s wouldn't use/recognize the term "weekend"?

It's quite possible she really didn't know what the term meant. I'm incline to believe this is actually the case in this circumstance. The term may have been around, but certainly wasn't in widespread everyday usage by all as it is now. Even today, "weekends" are really only 'relevant' to those who work, or attend school, on a full time basis. To others they are simply two more days in the week, not different from the others. Lady Grantham would have been raised an aristocrat and married an aristocrat. Back then aristocrats did not have careers or full time employment. Since she only socialized with aristocrats, she wouldn't have planned her schedule around weekends, but rather holidays and other traditions. However around this point in time, the 'new moneyed' families did start to mingle with the aristocrats. And they would own businesses, and adhere to more of a traditional M-F schedule. During much of Lady Grantham's life she would never have socialized with people who had to adhere to such a stringent M-F schedule for business. So it's not surprising that during this era she would first encounter the term in a manner such as that. However she is educated, and likely would've quite quickly grasped the term on her own. Thus her asking was more of snobbery, although a touch of ignorance as well

Should I start watching Downton Abbey?

I decided to stream it from Amazon since it was free. I started about a month ago and watched the entire 6 seasons from beginning to end. Then I had some questions and decided to watch the entire show from beginning to end again since I knew who each person was and certain things that were going to happen. I didn’t realize that the show would affect me as much as it did. I think if you like the first episode then most likely you will enjoy the entire series.

Does anyone know when Downton Abby start in 2014 and also, what chanel does HOMELAND play in Houston Tx.?

January 5th on PBS (Masterpiece)
Homeland airs on Showtime. You might not get that channel since it's a cable channel you have to pay for and it's usually in the higher cable prices packages. But check with your cable to see if you do or how much it would cost.

Downton Abbey? Worth watching?

Ok so I'm a guy. I like tv shows with suspense and adventure and action. Lost, OUAT, The walking dead, grimm, roswell. Also comedies such as the Office. For people who have seen a considerable amount of this show, based on the tv shows above, do you think i would enjoy Downton Abbey any? I hear numerous people talk about it but not sure. I know youre thinking, "shut up and go see for yourself", but im kinda to lazy to lol.
I hear people say its a drama. is that all it is? is it cool, or is it just everyday people leading a unimpressive, droll life?

In Downton Abbey season 3, why does Bates' cellmate hate Bates? Ditto for that one guard. And what was?

I think we're supposed to think that Bates is not a criminal and doesn't fit in. He also threatened the cellmate not to mess with him. His cellmate is in cahoots with the guard, running a smuggling ring inside the prison. They see Bates as threat because of his honesty.

It's a weak story. Downton is about everything other than the plot.

In which season did Downton Abbey's fortune start declining?

Are you talking about the characters in the show or the quality of the series itself? The fortunes of the Grantham family were dropping all through the 19th century, forcing the heir played by Hugh Bonneville to marry the rich American heiress of Elizabeth McGovern. After their marriage, and very early in the series, the Earl loses nearly all this new money in a failed Canadian railroad investment. So the family is on the decline from the beginning. The series went sour in episode six, season two, when Fellowes briefly brings on the character of the burned soldier claiming to be the long lost heir Patrick Crawley suffering from amnesia (storyline quickly abandoned) and Matthew Crawley is paralyzed (from which he’ll miraculously recover). That was the point that I realized it was just a gussied-up soap opera masquerading as something more important and that it no longer merited watching. I fully expected to see the introduction of an “evil twin” character or to learn that Edith had gotten knocked up by someone who later turned out to be her long lost brother. All typical soap opera tropes. In short, it was just ridiculous. When several of the principal actors jumped ship early in the run over contract disputes and were replaced by substitutes as if nothing had happened, the soap opera foundation was confirmed. I stopped watching at the end of season two and tuned in again only for the finale of season 6 to learn that I could still follow everything and hadn’t missed a beat. That’s the mark of a true soap.
