What Did Hurricane Katrina Teach Us About African American Emergency Preparedness

What did we learn about Hurricane Katrina?

well im not an american but i guess that we should put down our dignity and be hunble just like jesus when it comes to humanity.........

Why was the response to hurricane Katrina so messed up?

It seems completely stupid how cops weren't allowing pedestrians to walk on the bridge to get to the west side, along with constantly telling the people that busses would be coming soon but didn't.

How do Americans view George W. Bush's handling of Hurricane Katrina? Does Katrina ever enter the minds of those people quick to blame Obama for America's domestic problems?

I don't think anyone but the most deluded partisans believe the George Bush did a good Job during the Katrina crisis. His problems began when he demoted FEMA from a cabinet position to a smaller position inside the newly formed  Homeland SecurityDepartment. He then lowered their funding and broadened their mission to include terrorism response. Then he appointed Michael Brown, a political supporter who had very little experience and who's previous job was commissioner for the International Arabian Horse Association.  During the height of the crisis he inappropriately praised Browns inept handling with the comment "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job". Brown resigned a few days later. Bush himself looked foolish and uncaring during the crisis. On the day Katrina made landfall Bush met with the Homeland Security chief but talked about immigration with no mention of Katrina. Later in the day as New Orleans flooded he jokingly posed with a cake in a photo op at john McCain's birthday party in Phoenix, AZ. The next day he was photographed at a fundraiser joking around and playing a guitar. His aides later said he refused to watch any coverage of the disaster until Wednesday, a full 3 days into the disaster. Flying home from his vacation on Wednesday August 31st he did not stop in New Orleans but is photographed looking out the window at the devastation.  Five years later bush stateed that allowing that photograph was a "huge" mistake. Bush does not go to New Orleans until September 15th. So, for most Americans, many of whom where glued to their TVs watching one of our cities drowned, the coverage they saw was interspersed with pictures of Bush clowning around. Because much of the area most effected by the disaster had a largely black population, the coverage also made it seem like Bushs indifference had a racial component. This led to things like Kanye Wests comment at the Concert for Hurricane Relief that "Bush doesn't care about black people. "Many well produced award winning television specials by serious people like Spike Lee and PBS document a lot of this and the HBO series "Treme" set just after the disaster dramatize the failures.  This has had a lot of influence on how people perceive George W Bush's legacy.

Why does everyone make such a big deal about Hurricane Katrina?

Wow, sick of the whole "Hurricane Katrina story"....interesting. I'm sick of it too...I get to see it everyday!! I live in south Mississippi. Most of your complaints hold partially true to NEW ORLEANS...not Mississippi. We didn't ask for everyone to do the walk for us...we stood back up with the help of others who were kind enough to donate their time and money. To them, I say thank you... Hurricane Katrina makes Andrew look like a little drizzle... Everything is GONE...there weren't any buildings to speak of after the storm...and you're mad at us? Of course this is a hurricane prone area...last storm we really had was Hurricane Georges in 1998. We've dodged a lot, but we get the big bad ones...Camille and Katrina...wow! However, maybe I can move to CA where they have earthquakes or the midwest where they have tornadoes. Maybe I can move to the northeast and participate in the blizzards....you see...no matter where I live...there's going to be a natural disaster waiting to happen. And the way it works is help your fellow citizens in this wonderful country so we can all stand strong again. When you have a hurricane hit you, we'll be there to pick you back up too.

I'm tired of hearing about New Orleans too...a direct hit would have leveled the superdome, much as the entire MS Gulf Coast was leveled. It's about race and silly things now. Louisiana can't even figure out who to blame yet, and Mississippi is steadily rebuilding. We're not there yet; and it will be a while, but it'll be great again. When another storm comes in 30 years to top Katrina...I only hope the people are still as kind as they were this time to come to our aid.

The Sun Herald came out with a special issue of our local paper today about Katrina...48 hours before our lives changed forever. The list of the dead was there...ages 2+..dead! They even had a write up on each and every person...

I would expect someone who knows about hurricanes to be a little more considerate. It's not about complaining. I saw my own relatives work hard all day at their jobs just to come home and start working on rebuilding their homes...a daily routine for many...for months. I see it everyday. I drive by the FEMA trailers on the beach that house families of 4 and 5...my heart is theirs. Why can't yours be?

Was the response to hurricane "Katrina" a racist act?

No. I lived in NOLA at one time. I know what it was like. The mayor and the governor failed at their jobs and both should have been jailed. Just 4 years earlier an evacuation plan was put into motion. The city buses and school buses were to be used to evacuate all those who did not have transportation. There was enough time and resourses to move all the people out 4 times over, but Ray Naggan sat on his chocolate butt too long and the governor was too scared of him to tell him to move. They waited too late. After the storm came, all the transportation was destroyed. There was no way to get in to help the people. Thats ""WHY"" the plan was enacted into law 4 years earlier. Because you can prevent all the suffering if you follow the plan. Its hard to help after everything is under water. Naggan should be executed in public and Blanco should spend time in jail. This whole fiasco belongs to mainly Ray Naggan. And the stupid people elected the fool again. You can not help the idiots in New Orleans.

Why did so many people die in Hurricane Katrina?

Some people say that race had much to do with it, that it was the failure of the white powers that be (Prez Bush, Gov of LA) to get people, mostly black, out safely. I mean how many people died in Hurricane Andrew, or the other hurricanes that have hit in the past 20 years? Probably not even as many as Katrina. Now, with Gustav barreling towards LA and the gulf coast, will we see a huge death toll from it?

Why were guns confiscated during Katrina?

It’s a bit complex. There are many reports, some infamous, of firearms confiscation in the wake of Katrina. However, many of these reports are misleading. Many people were evacuated by some sort of government transport (usually busses). Firearms were not allowed on these, and as such were ‘confiscated’ when people boarded the busses. I believe that this represents the bulk of such ‘confiscations’.Some firearms were removed from abandoned homes. And yes, in some number of cases, law enforcement and/or military units actually did just straight up take people's guns. The final category is really what we are talking about here, so let’s dive a bit deeper:Mayor Ray Nagin declared (illegally) that “no one was to be armed outside of law enforcement”.There were military units and police from many areas of the US which all have wildly varying firearms laws. In at least some cases, those people simply didn’t know what the law was, and acted inappropriately.Keep in mind a backdrop of absolute anarchy. Of utility workers being shot at. Of just a stunning amount of totally crazy stuff that all sort of qualifies as a total one off case that’s extremely unlikely anywhere else in the US. This is what an actual breakdown of law and order and society looks like… But this has way more to do with New Orleans than it does to do with disasters. Why was it done? Because people thought it was a good idea at the time. There really wasn’t a whole lot more thought given to it.

As a white American, what did you think of Donald Trump's "What do you have to lose?" pitch to African Americans?

It is not about any particular racial mix. Workers’ Dignity is the priority. Workers have a right to their property no matter what. Thier property is the fruits of their labor. Just when the African American and other minorities start getting production worker middle class wages. the Bush and Clinton families came and destroyed the production workers middle class by instigating free trade economics. Instead they created a new working poor class and even an under class. Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans exposed a vast under class living in a silent depression. The same scenario can be found in most major American cities. Behind all this, there is economic disease called free trade with workers being the commodities being traded. They are put on a global trading block to compete for the same jobs down to the levels of wage slaves and even child labor like gladiators fighting for their economic lives. The liberals have controlled the the welfare of Black America since 1932 and used the situation to win elections and then played their game of give and take after that. Now Trump calls out to the African Americans not as race but as workers who have a right to the American Dream like everyone else. His calls for economic equality for all including the African Americans. This is what America should be all about. Trump is above the race issue and knows any society can not live off the suffering of others for the things they use and consume. http://tapsearch.com/workers-dig...
