What Did I Cut And Did I Cut Too Deep

Did I cut myself too deep?

I've been self harming on and off for a year, gradually getting deeper. This time, one of my cuts was much deeper than the rest. When I cut it, I could see a lot further into the skin and it was a peachy pink underneath. Unlike most of my cuts, it wasn't just a line - it was gaping enough so that I could see into it. I decided to leave it to heal for a bit so I just tidied the bathroom a bit, and when I looked at it after a few minutes there was a line of blood about 1 or 2 inches long going down from the cut. I've bleed before obviously, but I've never had so much blood that it drips that far. I cleaned the cut, then wrapped it in a bandage from my first aid kit until it was dried and healed over. Now it's extremely sore. Have I cut too deep? If so, how can I avoid infection?

I am NOT going to the hospital by the way, not unless I need stitches or something.

What did I cut and did I cut too deep?

I accidentally cut myself too far the other day. It scared me because I saw purple. Like the cut was wider than a "cat-strach" cut and it was a lot deeper. When I did it I did not feel anything but just before it started to bleed. I saw a whiteish-purple like inside the skin. What was that whiteish-purple and what did I cut when I did?

Did i cut too deep?

You will hit a vein and bleed to death if you cut deeper. Thats the reality of cutting your wrist. You obviously have no idea of the dangerous of self harm. There is always a risk of infection, you could cut through a vein or artery and bleed to death or need surgery, you could lose a limb. I self harmed for 10 years, ended up in surgery for cutting through a vein in my wrist, I was lucky I didn't die. I was left with over 30 big horrible looking scars on my arms and wrists that I had to hide from everyone and in the end had to get tattoos to cover them so I could get my arms out in hot weather without getting stared at. I hacked away so much at my outer wrist that my hand was hanging off and I had to have it stitched up to go back to somewhat "normality" and now my arm dips in because I lost so much arm tissue. I know a women who cut her arm (not her wrist, and the wrist is more dangerous) and went through an artery and she can no longer use her arm.

This will be your reality if you do not stop. You will ruin your body. If you are lucky and don't hit a vein or an artery you will live and never have to have surgery but the way you are going you will end up like me, maybe dead. I was lucky enough to be in a psychiatric hospital when I cut through my vein so I was found by staff quick enough for them to control the bleeding and get me into surgery.

Just think, if you cut your wrist so deep you end up going through a vein you will be bleeding out so much that you will panic, you will go light headed and pass out stopping you from stopping the blood pouring out and you will die if no one finds you quick enough.

I am not giving you hate here or trying to be mean I am just telling you from personal experience what will happen to you if you do not stop.

Yes I know its addictive, I have been there but people can stop just like I have. When you come to the realisation that you are ruining your body and putting your life at risk every time you cut yourself you know to stop. I have seen how much pain I put my family through when they thought I was dying, seriously I was on my death bed with my parents and boyfriend around me sobbing uncontrollably. Not a nice thing to see or hear.

How deep of a cut is too deep?

Depends on what you are referring to. Too deep to leave scars. To bleed to death. For blood to gush out. Bit of advice if you're planning on cutting. It has taken over a year for my wrist to look as healed as it does. It may look benign, but I used to slice my wrist up everyday and couldn't stop. Everyday I have to be reminded of it because takes so long to heal. I have to be cautious and careful that others don't see it. Just like drugs, you feel better and then worse than before. Don't start it and you won't have to worry about how deep is too deep.

How do you know when you cut too deep?

I also cut on my hip. That happened to me a couple days ago and I knew I cut a little too deep because of how the skin parted and because I just kept bleeding and bleeding. As long as you keep it clean then it will be fine. For now keep it covered because any irritation to it will make it bleed again. The cut will most likely open and reopen over and over again if you cut it a little too deep. It will bleed for a while then it will slowly heal back up. So just give it some time about a week or 2 weeks. I get tired of people telling me not to do it and to get help to so you don't have to worry about me telling you that haha((: If you are a girl , then you know it will be fine because we lose plent of blood during our periods ( not to sound gross or anything)
Anyways......
I hope I helped You((:

How do you know if you cut your wrist too deep?

When the meat and muscle come bulging up through the slice and spill over the sides. A person then need stitches on the inside and on the outside, otherwise there is great danger of infection and nerve or even bone damage..

It's not difficult to slice into an artery when slicing upwards from the wrist to the elbows bend with a scalpal. Hitting the aretery causes a lot of blood loss because the heart keeps pumping the blood so it shoots out of the cut artery with every heart beat, and arteries carry a lot of blood, some carry it away from the heart to be cleaned and some are carrying it into the heart and brain.

It's too deep if you cannot stop the bleeding with direct pressure, and it's probably too late if you cannot stop the bleeding with a tourniquet. We had a young boy die of an accidental gunshot wound to his thigh because he bled out before the ambulance could get him to the hospital. He and his dad were hunting and the father had to witness the whole thing the boy died in his arms. Made me want to quit the ambulance service.

How can I treat a deep cut at home?

Direct pressure on the cut until it stops bleeding. You see, your did hit a vein (or artery if the blood is pulsating out)-  you had to have done so in  order to have that much blood exiting your body.  Just because you can't see some little bit of tubing in the cut doesn't mean you didn't nick a small vein (or artery- if the blood is pulsating out). Some of these blood vessels are very slender, and, because of the blood streaming out of the cut, it's all red to you and you don't note the difference between skin, fat and muscle tissue. So, direct pressure on the wound until it stops bleeding.  Then take a regular bandaide, fold it in half, and cut a small square out of each side of the pad so that when you unfold it, it looks like a a fat-legged capitol H.  Now, carefully peel one side of the paper backing off the bandaide, and apply it to one side of the skin near the cut, then pull the bandaide all the way across the cut so the two edges are now approximated-  pulled together- and fasten the other side of the bandaide down.  This is called a "butterfly", and if you don't have steri-strips or sutures, it'll work in a pinch.  It allows air to circulate which dries things up and allows fast healing while holding the wound closed to prevent more infection.  How to Make a Butterfly BandageGood luck.  And be way more careful next time, understand?

If I can see the fat under my skin does that mean I cut too deep?

Yes, you have cut wayyy too deep. You may not want to but you need to go to the hospital. and keep pressure on it with something clean. There are a lot of infections you could get that could do a ton of damage. Maybe they could even help you to stop cutting. trust me you will be so much happier with youself when you finally are able to quit and the longer you dont cut the easier it gets. if you ever need someone who wont judge you to talk to, you can email me. jewel_turner16@yahoo.com

I cut myself too deep this time, what do I do?

Your whole "I don't know how else to deal with my emotions" thing despite understanding why you cut yourself is quite messed up. Go see a psychiatrist! also... apply pressure to the wound, if you need stitches, say you grazed your hip on something. Also.... the fact that you open up and tell of your problems shows that you can get help. You also seem quite intelligent, but misguided. SO.... get stitches, get a psychiatrist, stop cutting yourself.
