What Do Fbi Agents Do

What do FBI agents wear?

Contrary to what some others have told you, FBI agents wear a jacket and tie every day, even in laboratory assignments (when they take off their jacket and wear a lab coat). Now, as an outsider, I have seen a change in the post J. Edgar Hoover days, and often agents can be seen in sport coats and slacks rather than suits whereas it was always dark suits and white shirts in the old days. Of course dark business suits are still the norm with most agents.

At the academy, trainees and most of the instructors wear Bureau polo shorts and khakis, and that attire is sometime appropriate for special field function, like a crime scene processing assignment for member of the local ERT (Evidence Response Team). Of course SWAT and HRT members wear BDUs when on assignment.

Female agents wear the equivalent and dark business suits and subdued color blouses are the norm.

I have been doing business with the FBI since 1984 or so, and there has been very little significant change in how they dress. They are the paradigm for dress codes for most big city detective divisions, who also require detectives to dress in a jacket and tie (at least on day-shift).

Do FBI agents choose their cases?

FBI special agents are generally assigned to a squad with a designated focus or area of responsibility: bank robbery, counterterrorism, counterespionage, financial crimes, etc. Cases are assigned to the squad with the appropriare focus. Within that squad, the supervisor will designate the lead case agent and who is to assist him or her. An agent might request to be assigned to one case or another, but usually won’t have much luck if the subject matter is outside his assignment area.

Do the FBI agents have uniforms?

If you are thinking uniforms in the traditional sense, no they don’t, but there are some type of kinda, sorta uniforms. First of all, normally male agents wear suits and ties. Also there are raid jackets worn by all agents when they go out on , well, raids. Also our SWAT teams have tactical clothing that could be thought of as uniforms. Also the Evidence Response Teams wear raid type jackets.I believe the security at FBI Headquarters is comprised of FBI employees (not contractors) and they are the only ones I’ve ever seen in 26 years as an agent that weat distinctive police type uniforms.Short answer, no the FBI does not really wear uniforms.

What do FBI agents actually do?

It depends on where they are assigned. In a nutshell, the FBI is the principal investigative arm of the Department of Justice and is responsible for a variety of areas. Federal law isn’t exactly like state law. Constitutionally, there is generally some kind of interstate commerce connection that gives Congress some kind of jurisdiction. The current FBI priorities areProtect the United States from terrorist attacks,Protect the United States against foreign intelligence operations and espionage,Protect the United States against cyber-based attacks and high-technology crimes,Combat public corruption at all levels,Protect civil rights,Combat transnational/national criminal organizations and enterprises,Combat major white-collar crime,Combat significant violent crime,Support federal, state, local and international partners, andUpgrade technology to enable, and further, the successful performances of its missions as stated above. In addition, the FBI also has some interesting side gigs like maintaining the national fingerprint database, investigating felonies on some Native American reservations, etc. A lot of it is just collaboration and application of resources to state and local investigations.

Do FBI agents have dress uniforms?

I mean like what police detectives would wear? I always see FBI members portrayed on TV in suits and ties but I was wondering what they would wear to a ceremony or a funeral or something. Or do they just wear suits and ties all of the time?

What IQ do FBI agents typically have?

You have to be a college grad, finish close to the top of your class, be physically fit, and have some law enforcement experience.

Do FBI agents carry handcuffs?

Yes. Most carry one pair but some carry more than one pair, if there is a tactical / operational need. Agents receive extensive training handcuffing, locking, double locking, and unlocking handcuffs, as well as safely transporting subjects in handcuffs. Most agents do not take people into custody as often as local police or sheriff deputies, so it's on the agent to stay proficient, and practice.

What IQ do FBI agents typically have?

That depends on the type of agent.

As of October 31, 2006, the FBI had a total of 30,762 employees. That includes 12,659 special agents and 18,009 support staff, such as intelligence analysts, language specialists, scientists, information technology specialists. While I imagine the special agents won’t have exceptional IQ, the support staff strikes me as a smarter bunch.

Do all FBI agents go undercover? If so, for how long?

No. First there has to be a need. Then you have to have the skill set for that need. Then you volunter. Then you go through assessment and UC training. It takes a special personality to do UC work. Biggest attribute is quick thinking on your feet and an engaging personality. Plus a healthy dose of guts and desire for adventure. It takes a toll though. Mainly on family that are your support group. I enjoyed my stint for a year or so and is one of my fondest memories in my 27 years with the Bureau. Some of the “bad guys” actually become your friends kinda, sorta. They are characters for sure. Not the mean, vicious ones of course. Just the regular crooks not physically hurting people.
