What Do I Have To Do First In Order To Get A Career Working In Cps

Do unfounded cases with CPS appear on a "criminal records report?"?

Even 'founded' cases with CPS do not appear on a criminal records check. What shows up on your record are:
Arrests - even if the charge is later dismissed.
Convictions - You know when you've been convicted. Either you pled guilty or the judge declared you guilty. Acquittals do not show up. There is no crime in being acquitted.

Certain CPS cases do go to criminal trial. Those require an arrest first. Then court, if not dismissed, to result in conviction or acquittal. Unfounded ones usually don't. If they're unfounded, then there was no evidence, or insufficient evidence, to hold trial.

Careers in Psychology?

I'm currently pursuing a Bach degree in Psych, but I really have no idea what I want to do with it? Its facinating so I'm majoring in it but I'm really confused about the post-graduation part. I don't want to teach, I have a 6 month old, so I'm NOT going to graduate school. I was really interested in working with CPS but now I'm reconsidering because I'm not sure I could handle such a stressful career (I'm REALLY sensitive, I think I'd end up dead if I had to see kids getting hurt every day). ALso, does anyone have any ideas on experience I can get in a 'said career' while I'm still in school, ei internships, where should i be looking? THANKS!

Is Masters from Northeastern CPS (informatics) worth it? I do not have work experience. Will there be any discrimination for jobs after masters due to college?

Did you or do you have any job prospects without a MS? This should answer your question. If you can find a job, take it (but first find out if your employer will pay for your MS). If you can’t find a job, this will tell you more about a career in informatics than anything else would.

As a CPS worker is it difficult to not carry the emotional aspect of your job home with you?

It depends on the individual. Every professional handles work-place stress differently. For me, I remember exactly how I felt when I saw my first case of child abuse. It wasn't what I had expected. It was far worse than what I could have ever imagined. I learned how to manage my thoughts through meditation, I go for a run every morning before work, and I make my life a priority. The turnover rate of CPS caseworkers is extremely high. Caseworkers who decide to stay will eventually learn how to manage their feelings and emotions when they're re-expososed to secondary trauma. Some caseworkers quit, and others are asked to resign from their positions.Ultimately, CPS has a tremendous amount of responsibility in their job functions, but receive minimal support from the beurocrats at the very top. These beaurocrats lack the resources, techniques, and perhaps the will, to become familiar with field activities and are distracted by other administrative concerns such as agency morale and community relations. I think this is what keeps me awake at night.

Is it worth it to become a Certified Professional Secretary or CPS? Do companies value that certification?

I'm considering getting either the CPS or CAP (Certified Administrative Professional) from IAAP. However, I wonder if companies really consider those certifications worthwhile or take them in to account when hiring.

Does it make a difference? Which is better to have? Should I even bother getting the CAP in addition to the CPS?

I recently had a premie can cps take her from me with out warning?

If the baby is in the hospital the whole time, technically it is in the care of the hospital. Therefor any neglect suffered by the child would be the responsibility of the hospital. they cant claim neglect. the hospital is watching the child. they cant claim endangerment, the baby is already at the hospital! No the stares you get are probably just because nurses are busy bodies and they cant believe you wouldnt want to spend every waking moment with your baby.
How would there be suspicion of you doing something wrong if you havent even taken the baby home yet?
I think you feel guilty for not being able to see her as much as you think you should, and that you are projecting your guiltly feelings into judgement by the hospital staff. CPS cant come take your baby for no reason, especially if you havent even ever had custody of her yet.
However they might do a wellness test before the hospital releases the baby to make sure you are not on drugs or something. SO if you are on drugs... Shame on you and you better get clean before you try to take the baby home. But thats just if you are, and I dont think you are.

Can you go straight for MSW or do you have to get your BSW first?

You have to get your BSW before your MSW.

Your BSW will most likely consist of 2 years of undergraduate (if you skip your AA) general education classes and then 2 years in the Social Work program. After you complete your BSW in my school if you had good enough grades (3.5 or higher) you could apply for the accelerated MSW program which is completed in 1 year instead of 2.

I does depend on the state you live in however to determine if you even need a MSW to practice as a CPS worker. I lived and went to school in Washington, but I did my internship in Idaho. And since they are different states there were different rule. I would suggest looking into the specific CPS department you want to work in and check our some of the job description to see what exactly you need.

Your biggest hurdle in my opinion is picking an internship. If you are certain you want to work in CPS then aim towards an internship in that field. Washington and Idaho had a program where you could work for the state in CPS and then they would give you a stipend. In exchange for the money however you would have to apply for every job that comes available for the 2 months after you graduate and work for the state for however many months you did you internship. The positive side of this program is they pay your tuition during your internship and give you a stipend. You also have job prospects after graduate school which in this economy help a lot. Then after 2 months if you don’t get a job you don’t have to repay the commitment and you are free to pursue other interests. The draw back is you might have to move to another part of your state, and if you have a family or other commitments where you can’t move it might not be a good program to follow. There are a lot more plus and negative sides to this program, but these are the ones that I identified with.

Anyway if you choose to get your MSW in Social Work (your BA doesn’t have to be in social work), then focus on your internship, because in my opinion it’s the single most important part of the process. I did my internship at CPS in Idaho and now after school I have learned that I want to focus on Medical Social Work, because they make more money generally. But its been hard to get a job in Medical Social Work because all my experience is in CPS.

So anyway I hope this helps, feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Do People hate social workers?

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people assume that “social worker” is synonymous with “child protective services “. It isn’t!I went to school for 6 years in order to obtain my masters degree in social work. I can distinctly remember one of my professors discussing popular myths that are associated with social workers, and a common and false one is that we are “baby snatchers”. The truth is, out of all the students in my undergraduate class, and especially my graduate cohort none went on to work at the department of children and families. Not one person went through all of the years of schooling, papers, presentation, research, and interning in order to work for DCF, and take kids away from their parents, and to barely get paid enough to survive, which is the case when you work for CPS.Being a social worker is about helping vulnerable populations, and providing those in need with the necessary resources in order to extricate oneself from the unfortunate circumstances they happen to be in.Social workers can work in hospitals, hospices, substance abuse facility’s, psychiatric facilities, jails/prisons, juvenile detention centers, schools, nursing homes, state homes, Baker act facilities, and many other places. Social workers help with victims of human trafficking, victims of rape, victims of domestic violence. While it may sound cliche , the majority of social workers that go into this field have done so in order to help people, and make a difference in atleast one persons life. We take home our patients problems, and we see horrible abuse, and injustices. In my opinion, it takes a special type of person to be in this field!I am not trying to say that there are not bad social workers in the field. It would be naive, and ignorant for me to even suggest that everyone who goes into the field is a saint. However, many of the individuals that end up working with child protective services are not social workers. They don’t have the schooling, credentials, or training to refer to themselves as such. Unfortunately, the department of children and families doesn’t pay well, has overworked employees, and a high turnover rate, which usually results in inadequate training, and individuals who have not even finished a four year degree.I apologize for the long post, but prople are often unaware of what a social worker actually is/does, and unfortunately we are boxed into the “baby snatcher” category when that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Can my friend still become a nurse if she has been indicated by CPS?

She really does need to fight to clear her name, otherwise she could find herself blocked from most nursing jobs. There is a Registry of Abuse and Neglect where her name will go. Some states keep the name on forever; some for a limited number of years. Some states don't put the mild cases in the Registry, but some do. There was a law passed for a National Registry where all these names could go eventually, but it hasn't been set up yet as far as I know.

Tell her to google the CPS site for her state, which may tell her who gets put into the abuse registry and for how long. Then have her go to the following web site for ideas on how to fight the system.
http://www.fightcps.com

I know how it feels. I once got indicated just for yelling at my son (he never got yelled at very much) and I had to struggle with the system to clear my name. Otherwise I would be a Registered Child Abuser right now, when I had never done any abuse! The definitions of abuse/neglect are very broad nowadays, and many good parents do find themselves caught in the web. If they would only list REAL child abusers in these Registries, they would be useful tools. But as they are, innocent people get fired from jobs and blocked off from potential jobs.

What jobs can I get with a early childhood education bachelor degree?

a BA in ECE allows you to teach children from birth through 3 grade. Also depending on what electives you take and what you minor in you may be able to teach Special Education of young children, or become the director of a childcare or pre-school program.

I do not know how much it pays, but I am a teacher with an AA degree in ECE, and I make $11.25 an hour.
