What Do Marine Biologists Do

What do marine biologist do?

Well iv been thinking abo my future a lot lately and I love animals and water.soo I figured this wud be a good thing to do but I don't really know that much about it.thanks please answer?!

How much do marine biologists make? ?

According to the Dept of Labor, real marine biologists (those with a PhD) make an average of $70,000 a year. Sea world trainers are not marine biologists, they are performers who teach captive animals tricks. They don't make much money, since there are more people who want to do the job than actual jobs available. Most have degrees in psychology or some animal behavior. Experience is what will help you the most, so volunteer where you can. After you can get an apprenticeship with a trainer and scrub buckets for ten years you can work with the animals and work your way up from there. Trainers make about $10 an hour at the upper ranges.

What is it like to be a marine biologist?

I live close to Monterey Bay Aquarium and Research Institute (MBARI). I have seen the live interviews by children on a couple of bonafide marine biologist. They are so enthused about their job that I think sometimes they forget to eat. They like diving in the water with otters and they do research on how to sustain our food resource. They have develop abalone farming. They content there are enough abalone for otters and for people. You start them about the importance of the giant kelp in the monterey bay’s ecosystem. You will get a full details on how kelp forest preserves the otters habitat- all fascinating. They will destroy the myth that sharks are not as dangerous as you may think. They show a slide of a marine biologist in a scuba suit swimming under water with a giant white . The biologist is about a .10 of the giant white. See this slide, the biologist asked us. I turned to my grandaughter who was 7 at that time and said: “That’s one demented Biologist because that shark can have him like you can eat a sliver of French fry. My personal take on this is that they channel all their sexual energy in their research. The world or the bay is their oyster or laboratory. Of course, Monterey is where int famous Doc Ricketts ( the time in the ‘40’s with John Steinbeck) established his laboratory and its a few feet away from MBARI in Cannery Row-that is another fascinating story. In the end they are human beings with a degree or PhD in Marine Biology but with a passion that seems to be self sustaining. They also tell you the importance of Elkhorn Slough in the Bay’s ecosystem. Very different personality form a Cellular Biologist.

What do marine biologists do in Antarctica?

A bazillion things. The sea is teaming with life like penguins, seals and fish and recently a freshwater lake has been discovered. Lake Vostok lays under 13,000 feet of ice, so it dates back millenia. Scientists are certain that once Antarctica was actually a lush temperate zone, so nobody knows what sort of life could be existing in that lake, how they adapted and what answers they may hold. There are Antarctic fish that don’t freeze, even when the saline water dips well below freezing, though if they brush against ice it propogates an “ice spear” through their bodies and kills them, but their unique “anti-freeze” may have applications. I kew a guy who wintered over in Antactica twice, studying ocean life and he confirmed that the Antarctic holds answers to questions we aren’t advanced enough to even ask yet. He observed balls of algae that only had a brief time to propogate and evolve each year and wondered just how many millions of years old they must be given that they were in suspended animation for all but a few days each year.

What's a typical day for a marine biologist?

originally, i had wanted to major somewhere in astronomy but i noticed that i didn't really like the math that's involved with it. the concept of astronomy is amazing; i love it. however, it requires a great deal of physics and calculus which im not entirely sure i want to do for the rest of my life. i recently looked into marine biology, but have many questions about it. can an actual marine biologist tell me what's a typical day for him/her like and how much the career pays on average? any other information is appreciated! thanks!

To be a marine biologist do you have to know how to swim?

It depends on what type of work you wish to do in marine biology. If you want to work in the field, you will mostly likely be on a boat or on the shore, in this situation swimming will be very helpful if not absolutely necessary. However if you want to work in a laboratory, analyzing data, etc, then swimming will not be necessary.

As a side note, swimming can be scary at first, but it can be very fun and beneficial. It's a great form of excercise, and if you do choose to become a marine biologist will allow you more opportunities in the field. Check out your local YMCA, or community pool for lessons, life guards are normally very friendly and understanding. GOOD LUCK!!
