What Do You Call A Person Who Completes A Degree In Tourism

ESL Teacher without a degree?

Hi there Jesska,

It is possible to become an ESL teacher without a degree, it just means that the list of countries available to you is slightly shorter.

You are correct, the issue with not having a degree and teaching in Japan is largely due to visa reasons.

I'd advise you to take a look at this article called 'No Degree?...No problem! You can still teach abroad.' for a list of countries available to you as well as examples of people who've taught without degrees!

http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-chalkboar...

The e-book TEFL Uncovered is also really useful as it contains details about the requirements needed to teach in numerous countries worldwide.

When do you call a student graduate and an undergraduate?

Undergraduate students are working on an associate’s degree (2 years) or a bachelor’s degree (4 years). Graduate students are working on a master’s degree (usually about 2–3 years). Doctoral (or PhD) students are working on a PhD (I think 2 years?). Sometimes students are postdocs (after PhD), postgrads, etc. There are also “non-degree seeking” students, who are not trying to earn a particular degree. They would generally be classified as undergraduate, graduate, etc. based on similar criteria (are they taking undergraduate or graduate level courses). However there are combined courses where grad students have additional assignments compared to undergrads, and sometimes the higher level undergrad classes overlap the lower level grad classes.

Can I still be successful with a useless Bachelor's degree?

To be honest, most jobs that require very specific education usually need more than just a bachelor's degree: the upshot of which is that lots of jobs often require you only to prove that you can commit to and complete a degree, and aren't too concerned about what it was in, specifically.

Of course, the general subject matter is usually important (you're not going to become a museum curator with an aerospace degree), but so long as it's vaguely connected in some way, that's fine. You just need to learn how to tailor your responses on interviews/applications to make your qualifications relevent. Don't look at the 'fisheries science' part of it. Look at the subjects you've done and the skills they've given you (for example, perhaps....report writing, literature reviews, critical thinking, project management and so on). The actual content is neither here nor there.

So, look at what your life goals are, then look at what the skills your degree has given you can do to help you get there. If they call you on it at interview or whatever, say just that: that university was about learning skills, and learning how to learn, rather than about learning specific knowledge. Let them know that you've equipped yourself with skills that enable you to adapt to new situations, rather than just learning how to parrot textbooks.

So, erm...yes is my answer. You can be successful. Absolutely.
