What Do You Call A Socially Conservative And Economically Liberal Person

If someone is fiscally conservative and socially liberal, what are they? Are they Libertarian?

Indeed, they are libertarian.Sadly, in the United States this word has been misappropriated by ultra-conservatives such as the Tea Party, who embrace fiscal conservatism but none of the social liberalism. Consequently the word is somewhat tainted in the US, but elsewhere it retains its original meaning. Libertarians agree with conservatives that most of government is a massive waste of money. However, if you oppose gay marriage, think the war on drugs is a pretty neat idea, approve of drone strikes in places you can't point to on a map and believe that government has a mandate to spy on ordinary citizens, you are not a libertarian. The Nolan chart helps us out here:The key is that libertarians don't just think government is a waste of money, they go beyond this and think much of what government does is actively detrimental to all of us, even the poorest in society.

What is someone who is fiscally liberal and socially conservative called?

I am someone who subscribes to this point of view and I admit that, especially in the United States, it is quite a marginal and unpopular position to hold. It seems, for example, that if someone is in favor of universal healthcare, he must also support gay marriage and abortion. What’s the sense in that? For the people who claim that it is not a viable position to hold, those people are likely just unaccustomed with history and are prejudiced in their own points-of-view. Liberals seem to think that they alone possess the torch of “universal healthcare, tough regulation, social welfare,” etc., when, in reality, it hasn’t been that way historically. In the 19th century, especially in Europe, there were a number of socially conservative/fiscally “left-leaning” parties; in France, there were Catholic Socialists, such as Marc Sangnier’s group “le Sillon,” which sought to bring Catholicism and socialist ideals together. This is just one example, but there was a flowering of socially conservative/fiscally left-leaning parties in France during the late-19th century. (Let’s also remember that some of the parties in Europe that pushed for universal healthcare in those nations [something that Americans traditionally align with ‘Democrats’ and ‘liberals’] were not put in place by people who would have supported many ‘socially liberal’ policies in the 21st-century sense.) Of course, there were also many “Christian” or “Protestant” socialist movements, but those too were put by the wayside in the 20th century. What happened with this position, I think, was that, in the 20th century, many of the fascists were, in a sense, socially conservative but fiscally on the left, and a number of traditionalists, former aristocrats, and others conservative parties unfortunately aligned themselves with the fascists (for example, in Spain during the Spanish Civil War), and because of that, a socially conservative/fiscally left-leaning person is considered anathema.I’d hold onto your point of view, though, and don’t let the prejudices of Democrats and Republicans dictate how you should think. If you determine that being socially conservative and fiscally left-leaning is sensible, as I do, then hold fast to your opinions and don’t let the majority sway you.As for what this is called, it has no name—not because it is an invalid position, but because it is an unpopular one in the 21st century.

Socially liberal and fiscally conservative?

See President Bill Clinton for an explaination. He was a social liberal and fiscally conservative. Republicans are under the misconception that being socially liberal means having government give-aways for everything. Nothing could be further from the truth. Unlike republicans democrats don't want their morals legislated and don't want choice taken from them because of someones religious beliefs. I consider myself socially liberal and fiscally conservative. Pay as you go or don't go, period. The same thing Clinton used to balance the budget and hand President Bush a surplus. As a social type person thinking about the good of the many and not the few, I would much rather see my tax dollars being spent on health care for ALL of us than on this endeavor into Iraq. At least we would be spending our money on us for the betterment of ALL of our society. If that's un-American, I guess I'll never be an American even though I was born in the first capital of this country where our history abounds and all one has to do is walk the streets. Today's republicans think being conservative means trying to deny rights to people who are homosexual, protecting a fetus and insuring the right for me, you, and a whole bunch of people who shouldn't own guns, own them. I still say the only thing about conservatives that is conservative, is their thinking. They're stuck in the America of the fifties.

What do you call a liberal who is culturally/socially conservative?

Hmm, tricky question. The word “liberal” conveys a slightly different meaning, actually a narrower one, compared to that used in other countries. For example, in Japan, Liberal Democrat Party has been in power for quite an amount of time now. However, this party has no relation to Democrat Party of America, whatsoever. Fundamental principles of the party are conservative democracy, liberal conservatism, social conservatism. This information kept in mind, what has been described in the question is actually a mainstream conservative, nothing more nothing less. Because, if liberalism is stripped off of its social/cultural aspects, what in our hands is economic liberalism(at least this is what I can think of, for the time being. Any further contribution to this claim is welcomed.) Economic liberalism is in favour of private marketing, discourages or -strictly speaking- espouses complete rejection of governmental intervention. All the points taken into consideration, the characteristics mentioned above belongs to the umbrella of conservatism.

What are politicians who are socially conservative but economically leftist called?

We call those unicorns. Because they don't exist. There are many economically conservative and socially liberal but the later can't exist. To believe that liberal economics, although sweet and innocent like children playing in a play ground, as sweet as it sounds, it's complete nonsense. Liberal economics is to spend all the money that other people earn until the money runs out, then get out the credit cards. Now many conservatives want to actually solve why welfare is so bad or don't care about gay marriage but the later isn't real, it's a unicorn or extremely dense person with an IQ so low they can't be taken seriously, like can't tie their shoes.

How does someone who is socially conservative and fiscally liberal vote? Which party would they identify with?

I cannot comprehend how any of us can think for a moment that it is any of our business whether you or your wife/girlfriend choose to continue your pregnancy or not. We don’t put laws in place to “protect” you or your wife/girlfriend from getting breast enhancements or rhinoplasty, but when it comes to making difficult decisions about your reproduction, we suddenly think we should be involved. You should be allowed to make whatever medical decision that you, your doctor, and your family (if you choose to include your family in your decision making process) think is the right decision for your personal case.As for who you should vote for, take some online political polls to see who you are closest to. Try www.isidewith.com for a really comprehensive look at who you align with most closely. Keep clicking “more questions on…” to make sure that you answer all the questions they have (it is a finite set). The more questions you answer, the better your match-up will be. Every question has a “Learn more” button that will give you more information if you want it.When it gives you the list of candidates that you agree with, click on each name to see which questions you agree on and disagree on.Deciding who you should vote for requires some thought and effort. An online poll is a good start if you are having trouble thinking of something you can do to find out what you really believe.

Is it possible to be socially liberal and fiscally conservative?

Depends on how you define socially liberal and fiscally conservative. Back before Reagan, socially liberal meant that everybody owned their own body (I’m looking at you, anti-abortionists), and that what two consenting adults did with each other wasn’t anybody else’s business. It meant that you treated everybody the same, regardless of race, creed, national origin, etc. It meant that what someone chose to put inside their body wasn’t anybody else’s business, unless and until it affected other people around them.Yes, that’s an ideal, but that’s what socially liberal meant. Looking at some of these answers, I’m not sure what it means to anyone now.Fiscally conservative didn’t mean small government. It meant you paid for what you bought. It meant you tried to balance the budget. If you wanted to increase welfare benefits, you increased taxes. If you wanted to expand the military, you increased taxes. If you wanted to cut taxes on the wealthy, you had to cut spending. And, you know something, those two phrases, as I have defined them here, actually described an awful lot of the Republican party when I was young.Fiscal responsibility, and the desire for small government, are two different things. Since Reagan, the way the Republicans have been trying to drive small government is precisely through fiscal irresponsibility. Cut taxes, which people love, run up the debt, and then cry that we have to cut programs (everything but the military, of course) because we are in deficits created by the tax cuts.People in the U.S. don’t generally consider Sweden to be fiscally conservative. They are a socialist country, for crying out loud! (not really, but you get my point.) They bounce up and down between deficits and surpluses every year. [1] We haven’t had a surplus in the U.S. since the Clinton years. [2] Sweden is a lot more fiscally conservative than the U.S., in spite of their social safety net.Footnotes[1] Sweden Government budget deficit 2017[2] United States Federal Government Budget | 1948-2017 | Data | Chart
