How do I become an accountant?

It depends on what type of accountant you want to be. If you want to work as a private accountant (like "Oscar, Kevin, and Angela from the Ofiice"), you don't necessarily need any degree. There are some accountants with only a high school diploma.

If you want to work as a tax preparer, you only need a high school diploma and enroll in a free tax preparer class through Liberty, or any other company offering its services.

Now if you want to work for a public (not like "The Office" but a company filled with all accounting staffs doing tax, audit, and advisory) accounting firm, then you will need a bachelors with accounting classes. Depending on the school you go to, ask your counselor for the best route for an accountant. Some accounting firms may even hire economics major students.

If you want to advance in your career in public accounting firms, then you will need to pass the national CPA exam. In order to sit for the exam, you'll need to meet the educational requirements, such as holding a bachelors and passing a number of accounting classes.

There are many routes and levels of becoming an accountant.

You should visit the Big 4 websites. Familiarize yourself with the top global accounting firms (KPMG, Deloitte, E&Y, and PwC). If you want more information on how you can work for these firms, visit the sites below to help prep your career success with the Big 4.

How smart do you have to be to become an accountant?

Accounting is a difficult major but if you are a good student and are able to apply yourself to get good grades, you can probably handle it. I only had a 3.0 GPA when I graduated high school but had a 3.8 GPA in college and made the Dean's List each semester because I applied myself and did my best to learn.

I didn't have any accounting classes in high school, but in Accounting 101 the instructor said it didn't matter. She said high school accounting covered the first 4 to 5 chapters of the college text. When we got into the 5th chapter the kids who had accounting in high school were just as lost as the rest of us. All that to say it is difficult subject and to let you know that the high school class probably won't be that beneficial for you in college. However, the high school class showed you that you can do well in the subject and let you know if you enjoyed it. So if you enjoyed the class go for it. You can always change majors after a couple of semesters and not be far behind. At that point you'll have had other classes and will be able to see if there is another subject you enjoy more.

If you're able to get a job with an accounting firm as an intern that would be most beneficial to you. On the job training will help make the class work easier for you.

How do I become an Accountant when I already got a BS in something else?

To take the CPA exam it depends what the qualifications are for your state. It varies. You don't always need a degree to sit for the CPA exam again this varies on your state. As for the bachelor's in accounting, there's no way to get around it, you do need to take accounting courses to get the bachelor's in accounting. If you're serious about accounting then you should probably get a bachelor's in it.

Accounting is one of those majors where the previous courses build on the advanced courses. You need to take Accounting 1 and 2 before you take Intermediate Accounting, etc. So going straight into a master's without any previous knowledge wouldn't be a wise idea. Its great that you got a job as a personal banker, but if you want to be an accountant at another company then an accounting degree would be a big help.
