What are the most reliable and unbiased online sources of news?

To pick the most unbiased, neutral or truthful news source online, the person who attempts to answer will almost certainly be biased (The person has weighed options and comes up with a judgement what on he or she believes is most unbiased, based on personal biases), hardly neutral (or else the person wouldn’t pick just one site), and a liar, for selecting and embracing one site only gets a selection of what one site’s editors believe is closest to factual reporting. (separate from opinion pages).By selecting one site, you choose to put on blinders and deny the points of view published by other sites. And if you were to find such an unbiased and neutral site, it would excel mostly in creating boredom.Reporters and editors strive for objectivity, but objectivity does not mean giving equal space and weight to both sides of a story, as if a story only has two sides. Usually it has more. Objective means to quote sources accurately, and when someone says, and if someone cites a “fact” that can be objectively proven wrong, point it out. Often times, however, different sides will cite facts that are in fact accurate, but in opposition. Then it becomes a more interesting debate.A neutral news site suggests a site whose editors and reporter don’t care about the people and places that are their responsibility to cover. Solid news sites are passionate about fulfilling their responsibility, and are quick to report a story that threatens to undermine the places and people for whom they report.Truth is what they strive for, but reporters and editors know that truth is not always easy to find. So they work harder to find it, and point out what statements given by officials fall short of the truth, or may be true but is told without evidence. Finally, THERE IS NO ONE SOURCE to depend on for news. Some days, The New York Times comes closest to the mark of accurate, objective reporting. Sometimes it’s The Washington Post. Surprisingly often, it’s a small-town newspaper or radio station that rises closest to that mark by covering a story that major news sources have missed. And that is the key. Don’t depend on one source. News is complicated and it keeps changing. You have to use different sources to keep up.

Why would a conservative friend refer to me, a moderate leaning Democrat, as a Nazi?

Hitler's party was called the National Socialists. Conservatives like to call liberals socialists. So it is an easy step to calling liberals Nazis, and it works with some people because their knowledge of history is so limited.Adolph Hitler was neither communist nor socialist. Rather, he gained power by appealing to fears of Marxism, winning election against the two left wing parties. So why did Hitler's party use the term "socialist"? The party name pre-dated Hitler, back when the group contained a mishmash of angry citizens motivated by strong nationalistic and anti-Semitic views. Originally, some members of the party probably did resent aspects of capitalism, but as Hitler rose to power, any hint of anti-capitalism disappeared from their program.Socialism is, of course, an economic philosophy. Here in the US, politics, for time out of mind, has centered around economic theory, particularly for conservatives: How free is the marketplace, what limits on capitalistic competition? With the threat of worldwide Communism diminishing, this issue has lost its widespread appeal and forced the GOP to look for other constituencies, but at least until the Trump ascendancy, the Republican Party was, at its core, the party of anti-Marxism. Which is to say, economically focused.Hitler's party was about nation and purity of the Aryan race. Which is to say, NOT economically focused. And, of course, Adolph Hitler is well known for dismantling the trade unions and blaming socialism on Jews, hardly the stuff of socialism or liberalism. In short, no one who cares about actual history would equate Hitler's party with socialism. One might as well tie modern Republicans to the radicals who murdered Louis XVI; they were, after all, called Republicans too.

What are the political leanings of the major news sources in America?

US news organizations generally tend to be moderate politically and bend over backwards to be fair to all parties. WSJ is pretty moderate on its news pages and hard right on its editorial pages. I haven't looked lately, since Murdoch tightened his grip, but for most of the last 50 years, it has been generally regarded the best newspaper in the country.NYT is moderate on its news pages and left-of-center on its editorial pages. The Washington Post news pages have been coasting since Watergate and its editorial page tends to be right of center.US major metro newspapers are generally (perhaps surprisingly) moderate on their news pages, with the exception of the NY Post, which is owned by News Corp and is a crazy-ass right-wing rag. They have a strong tradition of balance and fairness for at least 50 years. Their editorial pages are more corporatist than anything else. They play it safe and don't take controversial stands. No one reads news magazines (Time, Newsweek) any more, so who cares what they think?

Which is the best source to get daily news?

Hi Ben, Thanks for the A2A.Overall, I think the best source of news is one that is trustworthy and interesting enough to keep you reading everyday. If you only want to read one source a day, then it should mainstream, at least a decade old, and cover all major categories of news.Media: CNN, Fox, NBC, CNBC, ABC, CBSNewspapers: New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street JournalGovernment: BBC, NPR, Al JazeeraNewswires: Reuters, Associated PressDigital Native: Bloomberg, Huffington PostOne source that stands out for it’s quality and credibility is the Associated Press at apnews.com . It covers the best top stories and a few high quality lifestyle articles. I really enjoy this site and they have a good app as well. Also consider news aggregators which allow you to view multiple sources in a single place. Some even have AI embedded that customizes your news according to topics you are interested in. I work for Opera where we have a tiny web browser with just such a feature, Opera Mini! Feel free to check it out. It also blocks crypto mining, saves a lot of data, and runs very fast.
