What Do You Think Of My Writing Style

What do you think of my writing?

As a regular responder on the Quora 'How to write' questions, I get a number of 'What do you think of my writing?' requests.I rarely answer these, though I will commonly look at what they have written. Typically - as in this case - it will be few paragraphs which at most will indicate spelling, grammar, and style, but rarely anything to do with the plot or characterization. In fact the sort of work that a primary school child would hand in when asked to write a story, and be judged for their literary gradeWhen I do respond, my advice is commonly the same as most professional writers, and along the lines ofNever ever show unfinished work to anyone. It is totally meaningless to criticize work that is unfinished, unstructured, and out of contextUnless it is clear cut what the market is, there is no way to judge the readership or how to compare it with the competition, and if you don't know your market then you are going nowhereIt does not matter what I, or anyone else thinks of your writing in regards to whether it is worth publishing. The people you need to impress are the Publishers, Agents, and Reviewers, and they are not writers. They are the people who earn a living by judging the merits of a book as a product, and that is what it is. If, by the merest chance it happens to be a work of art, then you will certainly be fully aware of this yourselfThough it may seem trivial when one starts writing, 'Writing' is a job. Anyone who is capable of judging your work to the point of analyzing it, commenting on it, restructuring it, and presenting it back to you in a useful way, is also capable of doing that to their own work, and unless they are a teacher paid to do such work, they would prefer to spend their time more usefullyAnd lastly, if you do get those prepared to consider your work and spend time trying to be helpful, you might take time to consider replying to them for their efforts (but not to me, as I do not intend being helpful on these types of question)Having said that, I do have a website for writers at MakeMovies Database it has virtually everything you will ever need to learn about writing on it.

What is your writing style?

Writing is a process and not an event. Its a daily ritual that needs a quirk, allows a writer's block and you are accepted if you are conceptually wrong but grammatically correct. Comprehension is important but grammar is smirked at, if wrong. My process is very simple.Choose your topic, if you are not given a topicResearch on the topicWrite an outline on the topicDraft the copyProof read the copy twice , but only if you have taken a break after drafting the copyProof-read, edit and revise the draft.Submit the final copy .

What do you think about J.K. Rowling's writing style?

What I love about her books is that she really gives you a sense of literally everything. She tells you how people speak and how they move, and her characters are more than figments of her imagination, they're people that, because of how she has written them, cause the audience to invest in them. Her style is very effective and really makes you forget that it's a book.

What do you think of GRRM’s writing style?

George R.R. Martin? If this is the one, the man is a monster. So many characters my head is absolutely spinning, and I’ve yet to read through Dance with the Dragons. For me, it’s a mixed bag, because I am not used to his style. He is good in building the world, that is true, it’s realistic, which is it’s biggest selling point, but for me, the thing that peeves me off the most he is using that little word ‘said’ too much for my tastes sometimes. He is also very detailed in descriptions, but I kind of miss the characters own feelings on the issue - he is very wordy, but doesn’t describe the character’s feelings too much, more or less leaving it to reader’s interpretation. The only one I can compare with is J.R.R Tolkien because both men have very similar style, however Tolkien is a little more smooth with his wording because he liked to play with words and syntax. GRRM is in comparison more on a realistic ground and his time lapses can be very exhausting for a reader.I can learn from both of them, so there’s that.Eirenei

Do you think that the popular style of writing on Quora is disingenuous?

Its popular for a reason, so it has to work somehowBut I feel like it has poisoned future popular answers in a way, because a lot of popular writers have a certain style of writing that a lot of people like, a lot of other people will copy the type of answer. So it becomes a kind of youtube on Quora, Quortube? Nevermind, trends get started and people follow them, so a lot of answers have the same style, which gets boring but a lot of people still enjoy. I don’t put any blame on anyone here, some people just have a writing style thats popular and others copy that style for the fame, and thats all fine. But it just gets in the way of people who give a serious answer without jokes. Those get kind of ignored by the majority of people scrolling through Quora, which is a damm shame because there are some amazing answers on here that are super useful. But sadly we can’t do anything about it, we can’t ban jokes on Quora, and people who have a fun writing style will get copied. So I think we just have to accept the fact that there is popular writing styles that get more views than other types of answers

What authors do you think have the best writing style? Why?

well,i won’t compare.(not certainly eligible for that)They are all their very own best! But to my preferences, from the authors i have read, including Indians,Americans,Africans,Britishers, and more.not that i hate the others, but i just find the Indian authors and their plots, amazingly more striking!let it be bulky novels or short stories, they simply slay.I don’t prefer non-fiction much. But Booker T.Washington,Anne Frank and Sudha Murthy are beyond amazing! gripping indeed. As for fiction,i love the Indian fiction much.of course, with stories so appealing ,so piercing that they remain with you, always. And you find yourself recalling the same excerpts.and through the same book again, once more! But there are exceptions too.there absolutely are!need i share my trauma going through one? or you get his name??Believe me,once you have read Jhumpa Lahiri & Arunadhati Roy & Ruskin Bond, you’ll slowly start loving ‘em for all the heavenish goodness they so possess!by all your heart! As for the other lovely authors,i would love to add Maya Angelou,Robin Sharma,Paulo Coelho,Helen Keller,Khalil Gibran,A.A Milne,Charles Dickens,Oscar Wilde,Roald Dahl,Enid Blyton,The Bard,Colin Dexter,Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the list goes on.anyways, thanks for stopping by.

How do I know what my writing style is?

The simplest way is to read it aloud. Compare to others like favorite authors. It is going to seem obvious who says what how. The reader identifies with the protagonist, for example, while the writer synchs with the author. This is going to be built on a number of things. The audience is whose ear they want to keep. They learned particular approaches. Their culture has certain types of literature. Dialects are spoken at the time. Events have reactions. There are the significant themes that represent the human condition. They are at the end of long traditions. The writers have a common set of rules that form the period. They pay attention to certain elements. The style arcs over their lifetime. There are the mediums of the day as well as the forms or genres. Editors may emphasize certain things. Critics are defining the movements. Apps can be used for analytics down to the proportions of sentence structure. The writer can vary their style to sound like someone else if they are making a point, e.g. having a couple of perspectives duke it out like the literary ages were confronting one another. Contrast Shelley to Hemingway to DF Wallace, for instance. The author may also take something a lot further and define new ground. Or they may knock out their favorites and work with what is left in order to be experimental. They can then go to any of these on demand. It also shifts their perception in terms of  how they listen or read. This way they can appreciate anyone else's view while maintaining their own intact. Similarly for changing the additional versions of their own pieces. This all then disappears into the art so the reader gets through it smoothly without knowing what held their attention because it was so fresh.Or they can listen to another sountrack in the background while in composition so that the mood is going to be adapted.
