Then when you take them to the auction you will get undesirable sale numbers and your cars will run when all the buying dealers have gone home. If you really want to be a dealer you need to get a retail license and know what you are doing. I have seen many people get dealers licenses and soon lose their a**.

I'm about to pull the tigger on getting my used car dealers license in Texas. I've read several times about the differences between wholesalers and retailers. I understand that wholesalers are only supposed to sell directly to other wholesalers or dealers and not to the public. To sell to the public a person needs a retail dealers license. The thing that I do not understand is why I see so many places called "wholesale auto world" or "wholesale direct" on every corner, but they seem to be selling directly to the public, selling on ebay, and in the autotrader/craigslist. How are they doing this? Are they actually a retail auto dealer with a confusing "wholesale" name? What's going on here? The reason I ask is because the state requirements for a wholesaler as so much easier than those for a retailer and it would be nice to only have to meet the wholesale requirements but still sell directly to the public. However the wholesalers can not cherry pick, they must buy all or at least a package of cars. The new car store will insist that the wholesaler take lots of undesirable cars in order to get a few nice ones. If the dealer does not know you he will try to unload all his garbage on you. Now lets assume you buy all these cars. You have to have a way of getting rid of them and make a profit. The nice cars you can resell to other dealers but what about the undesirable cars? The only way to get rid of them is at the auction. However unless you are a high volume wholesaler the auction will give you bad sale numbers. Your cars will run at the end of the day when everyone has gone home and they won't sell. If you do not have a retail license you can not get rid of then that way either so you will be stuck.
