What Does Dramatic Diagonals Mean

What is the difference between "melodramatic" and "dramatic"?

A drama is a play that tells a story with great difficulties experienced by the characters.Dramatic means having or showing the expected aspects of drama: pain, guilt, remorse, sadness (and often at the end: survival and/triumph).The Greek prefix melo- means sweet.Melodramatic means exaggeratedly-dramatic, over-dramatic. It is a historical performance style made popular in early cinema (which was silent, so the action was often exaggerated) that doesn't sweeten the story, it means the actors over-act in a stylized, sweet way, for effect. They over-act and exaggerate their body language to amplify drama, but the net effect to an intelligent audience is a comical story. They over-modulate their speech, too.Don't be so damned melodramatic, would you? (Meaning: “Don't totally exaggerate your gestures and facial expressions so extremely, would you?” This may be said as a general reminder to an opponent in a personal argument, as a power move or if warranted.)

What is the meaning of "The Raft of the Medusa", and why did Géricault paint it?

Géricault lived from 1791-1834, and the painting 'The Raft of the Medusa' is based on an event that was contemporary to the artist's lifetime. The painting is about a shipwreck that ocurred and provoked a political scandal in France. The 'Medusa' was a ship that had been carrying French colontists to Senegal, and sand sank off the west coast of Africa due to incompetence on the part of the captian, who was a political apointee. The captain, during the sipwreck, behaved dishonourably, and he and the crew were the first to evacuate the ship. They took over the lifeboats, and towed a makeshipft raft with 149 passengers on it. They eventually cut the tow rope, leaving the immigrants to drift under the sun of the equator for twelve days without food or water, and sufferiing a lot of torment. Only fifteen of them lived.

Géricault had investigated the story like a reporter and interviewed survivors. He did his best to authenticate the painting. He studied decaying bodies, and he built a lifesize raft in his studio. He even lashed himself to the mast of a small boat. He tried to capture the grim detail as much as he could.

The painting created a sensation because of the graphic treatment of the subject matter and the political implications.
Gériccault portrayed the most dramatic moment in the painting, the point at which the survivors regain hope of rescue. He sued painting devices to capture their desperate situation.

In terms of compostiion, he divided into two overlapping triangles. He tried to convey the impression of motions by contrasting the postures of the figures. One of his triangles was one of depair and one was of hope, and he used transitional figures in order to add unity and balnace to the painting.

In order to portray a menacing mood, he painted the storm clouds and cresting waves dark. He, however, painted the horizon bright.

The jumbled lines of the writhing bodies convey a mood of turbulence.Géricault's major theme is that of a gigantic struggle agisnt the elements of nautre. Undoubtedly, it is a struggle against the elements of human nature as well.

How to solve these questions?

1.A square parcel of land has an area of 1 million square feet. What is the length of one side of the parcel.

Let x be the length of one side, in feet.
Then
x^2 = 1 million = 1,000,000 = 10^6
and
x = √(10^6) = 10^3 = 1,000 feet

2. You are cutting a rectangular piece of fabric in half along the diagonal. The fabric measures 28 inches wide and 1 1/4 yards long. What is the length (in inches) of the diagonal

We already have one side length in inches. The other side measures
1 1/4 = 5/4 yards.

One yard = 3 feet = 3 * 12 inches = 36 inches, so that side measures
(5/4) 36 inches = 45 inches.

So the rectangle is 28 inches by 45 inches, and according to the Pythagorean theorem, the square of the diagonal (call it d) equals the sum of the squares of the sides:
d^2 = 28^2 + 45^2 = 784 + 2,025 = 2,809
so
d = √2,809 = 53 inches.
