What Does It Mean When A Boy Says You Are Pip

What does "pip pip" mean?

It used to be trendy many years ago for one person to say: "toodloo" and the other to reply "pip pip". I suspect that it was something to do with the engine steaming along with a hooting noise: "toodlooo" and the guard using his whistle to make the sound "pip pip" as the train moved out of the station, with people waving goodbye to one another. It's as good an explanation as any.

What does 'what larks, pip' mean?

The previous 'answer' by Alison Irving Hall is simply wrong. Joe never uses this phrase in circumstances where he 'knows it will never happen'. Rather, he says it to Pip in genuine anticipation of the larks, or laughs, they will have when Pip recovers fully. As Pip does indeed recover fully, and as Joe becomes happily married to Biddy, there is no doubt, for those who actually read the book, that Pip and Joe do indeed go on to have larks a plenty. What larks!!!

What does pip mean?

The other answers are good. Pip is an installer for Python packages. Basically you tell it what package you want to install, and pip downloads it and installs it, so that the package can be used in Python programs on your system. (The programs will still need to import the package to use it - pip makes sure that it is available to be imported). Here is the Wikipedia entry:pip (package manager) - WikipediaDocumentation for a package will often give the pip command that you need to use.

What is a pip? How does it work?

A PIP is a Performance Improvement Plan. Generally these are used when someone is not working out in their current role. Typically these last for a set period of time, usually 30-90 days. In the PIP, there should be a set of performance indicators and a quantitive measure of success associated with each indicator. A PIP is usually accompanied by a weekly meeting with the manager who created the PIP to coach the employee towards success. If the measures on the PIP are not met within the time alloted, the employee can be terminated. In my experience PIPs are used to document poor performance and fire an employee. Most employees do not meet the demands of a PIP and are either terminated or quit of their own accord. If your manager creates a PIP for you, ask that HR be involved in your meetings with your manager and ensure that the indicators are reasonable and that there is a solid way of measuring success or failure. If you are terminated with cause, you may not be able to collect unemployment. Quitting may allow you to say you left a job because it wasn't right for you instead of getting terminated.
