What Does Multiculturalism Mean And Does It Always Mean The Same Thing

Which is the best meaning of multiculturalism?

Another question from my health exam is this:
The first thing you need to do in order to negotiate a relationship is?

Set up a time to talk.

Find out where the relationship is currently.

Create a list of demands for the future.

Describe the meaning of multiculturalism in your own words?

Why is multiculturalism a controversial issue for some people?
How can the three sociological perspectives (e.g., social functionalism, social conflict, and symbolic interaction) be used to conceptually understand multiculturalism?

Why is multiculturalism important?

Multiculturalism, as defined as the idea that multiple cultures can co-exist within the same nation, seems on the face of it to be a rather benign idea. The concept that someone living in one culture finds a way to tolerate the cultural practises of other ethnic systems appears to lead to a more peaceful world as conflict between differing groups is set aside.

Yet there is a paradox to this idea. Suppose that it is the cultural standard of one group to be intolerant. Is a multicultural society supposed to accept that? If so, then this breaks down the basis of the multicultural identity as at least one group violates that. If not, then the multicultural ethic does not exist in the first place.

However, I do not see cultural exchange as being always a two-way street, nor is multiculturalism an all-or-nothing dichotomy. That is, a culture can choose to accept other cultures on a tolerant basis to a certain point, while other cultures will respond in a different manner. In a sense, there is pretty much a single meta-culture, where most rational beings with find agreement, but then again there is but one Human species.

I suppose that where multiculturalism shows its importance is in the idea that no culture is inherently superior to all others, and no culture is truly inferior to the rest. Every human culture has the possibility of contributing positively to the human condition, and the benefits of multicultural thoughts give us all the humility to not be so judging of a whole culture that we ignore that idea.

This does not mean we blindly accept all aspects of a cultural system. It simply means that we take each aspect on its own merit and determine if it can be acceptable in the whole. Fortunately, most things, such as language, religious belief, celebrations, and foodstuffs, are totally acceptable, while the ones that cannot be included are usually self-evident to the whole.

Perhaps the greatest importance is found in the idea that a mono-cultural experience, where everyone has the same system, can be utterly boring at best and stagnant at worst. Diversity within the human family is just as important as it is in nature, with it being a true source of strength in times of crises. Perhaps an apt analogy is the beauty that a flower garden has. A garden with just one type of flower has no comparison to the beauty that multitudes of flora holds.

Why do people pretend that multiculturalism is such a great thing when the world is becoming more divided each day?

I don't see it as "pretending". Multiculturism, like most concepts, varies from perspective to perspective.Multiculturism is a biproduct of immigration. It's always happened to an extent. One uniform culture would mean we were brain dead drones. The issues are with mass-immigration. Mass immigration is a booster-shot for the economy. It's artificial, like injecting cattle with growth hormones. You'll perhaps note that in recent times people have become more concerned with economics and politics than they are of their own lives, towns and peers. This is a result of two things.Firstly the Internet which has enabled us to connect globally and also to gorge on information that was previously all but unattainable.Secondly is grassroots education. A slow acclimatisation to multiculturism. This is supported by the government, the law, the courts and the media. I see it as social engineering. Evolution in motion. Removing attributes from the species, attributes which have helped us survive the challenges of time.Mass-immigration is dangerous. Despite all the preaching of acceptance, most of us prefer our own kind. Ethnicities seek out their own kind. It's perfectly natural. But it's not diversity. It's like oil and water. They don't mix. We end up creating a whole new tribalism, complete with differing laws, territories and cultures.I don't think there's anything wrong with multiculturism. The issue is that we have suits making the decisions. Suits who prioritise economics above all else. Under the suits they're just people (I think) and people are stupid, and short sighted, and we make mistakes. Only a fool would blindly assume that politicians are always right.

Is multiculturalism a good idea?

That depends on what you mean by multiculturalism. To some people, it means that every culture is distinct and separate and deserves equal respect on its own terms. And if that's what multiculturalism means, then it's a bad idea. A very bad idea. It's apartheid, only worse, because you aren't allowed to criticise the bad aspects in another culture. Things like child marriage and female genital mutilation. Or patriarchy. But that's not how I understand multiculturalism. Multiculturalism means a society with many overlapping cultures, in which the best of each can thrive and worst can be shamed away.  Some cultural practices are anathema to this form of multiculturalism - particularly exogamophobia, the fear of marrying-out, the cultural insistence that you should only marry one of your kind. The most positive celebrations of a multicultural society are cross-cultural weddings. I've been to a few, and they're brilliant. In a multicultural society, people belong to several different cultures at the same time and deal with the conflicting values on their own terms as individuals.  So you can be a Muslim hipster,  or a Sikh stockbroker or a posh white rapper. This sort of multiculturalism is a very good idea.

Why do some white's think multiculturalism is White genocide?

It’s an irrational fear.

Even in a diverse environment, so-called low birth rates and with the influx of immigrants, white Americans are still 72% of the United States population. White Americans have nothing to worry about, and yet some are scared out of their minds about multiculturalism. Blacks are 13% lmao. All the interracial marriages in the nation with whites/asians/blacks is 7%. Nothing is going to make the white race disappear.

Blacks have nothing to worry about either- 95% of African Americans marry within their ethnicity.

Multiculturalism is not destroying the nation!
