What Does My Optician Mean

What does this prescription mean?

Chickee is not quite right. You have mixed astigmatism, meaning that one object you are looking at will create two images focused in different places in your eye, one in front of your retina and one behind. It is like each eye is part farsighted and part nearsighted, but basically, it just results in images being blurred at almost all distances.

The middle number is the amount of astigmatism, but a negative number does not necessarily mean there is nearsightedness. The same prescription could be written with a positive number for the astigmatism. It simply represents the difference between the two principal meridians. For instance, in your right eye, you have +1.25 D of correction in the 105 meridian and -0.25 D of correction 90 degrees away (015 meridian). All the space between these two meridians will have varying degrees of correction between these two powers.

Your right eye has a majority of plus correction, which causes magnification, while your left eye has a majority of minus correction, which causes minification. There are different lens options that can help minimize these effects. Talk to your doctor or optician and let him/her know that you are bothered by how the lenses make you look.

The optician told me in had 0 prescription in each eye what does this mean?

this means you do not need glasses.  You have 20/20 vision without spectacle correction.  Your prescription is 'plano' in both right and left eyes.  If you want glasses, you can pick out a pair and ask for plano lenses to be inserted in to the frame.

Any opticians out there who can tell me what my results mean?

hi, my results/prescription is a load of jibberish, if someone knows what this means and can tell me what it means that would be helpful! Thankyou!

it says:

SPH CYL AXIS Near-ADD Inter-ADD BVD

R -0.50
L -0.25 -0.25 180.0

H-dist V-dist H-near V-near

R Prism
L Prism

What does it mean when an optician says "your eyes are turgid"? Is that a bad thing?

It means your eyes are swollen, basically. Absent any other detail, I have no idea why or what, exactly that means. Always ask the optometrist (or any doctor) to explain to you in plain language anything you do not understand.

What does my eye prescription mean?

You have it correct. He just left out the decimals for some reason. I'm not sure if you're wanting to know how to read the prescription or not, but if you do here is a small explanation. Hope it helps.

OD (oculus dextrus)=right eye.
OS (oculus sinister)= left eye

minus sign means you are nearsighted

So, in the right eye you have 3 diopters (focusing power) of nearsightedness.
while in the right eye you have 2.5 diopters of nearsightedness.

You have three numbers which is generally used for people who have an astigmatism (no worries, everyone generally has this to a degree. It's just an irregular curvature of the cornea). The general form for writing these numbers is S x C x Axis.
S= "spherical" portion of the prescription
C= "cylinder" or astigmatism, and can be a negative or a positive number. The bigger this number, the more astigmatism you have.
Axis= a number between 0 and 180 degrees.

So your prescription would be read as -3.00 + 1.50 x 005 for the right eye and -2.50 + -1.75 x 180 for the left
Right eye= 3 diopters of nearsightedness with 1.5 diopters of astigmatism, and an axis of 5 degrees
Left eye= 2.5 diopters of nearsightedness with 1.75 diopters of astigmatism, and an axis of 45 degrees

The higher the numbers the thicker the lense you will need. You left eye will have a more "weak" lense compared to your right eye.

What does my glasses prescription mean?

Your right eye is slightly nearsighted and your left eye is slightly nearsighted with a tiny amount of astigmatism. You can see more detail at this site http://eyeprescription.com

What does the DS mean with my glasses?

Minus means myopia(short sighted) and plus means hypermetropia(far sighted).D of the DS indicates Diopter, unit of the lens power. Lens having focal length of 100 centimeter is considered as 1.0 Diopter.Lens power in Diopter= 100 devided by focal length of the lens in centimeters. S of the DS indicates Spherical type. Two types of lenses, Spherical and Cylindrical i.e. DS and DC. Spherical is a part of sphere and Cylindrical, a part of Cylinder. You are having + or -0.50 Spherical. Astigmatism is corrected with Cylindrical lens. Enjoy!

My eyes are -2.75 and -1.75 and my optician says this is 'moderate'?

You are only able to get away with not wearing them now because one eye is - 1.75 , so it is a lot better than the other eye in comparison and you are using mainly that eye all the time.

If they were both - 2.75, I doubt you would be doing much without them on. Most people over - 2.00 wear them most of the time.

Moderate doesn't really mean anything, it is just an unofficial way to classify and categorize the powers...mild, moderate, severe and extreme.

What does axis on a glasses prescription mean?

Axis is part of your prescription, and tells an optician in which direction they must position any cylindrical power in your lenses (required for astigmatism). The number shows the orientation or angle (in degrees) from 1 to 180. The number 90 means vertical position, and180 horizontal. The amount of astigmatism (visual distortion) that is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. If this box is empty, it means that there is no astigmatism and your eyes are perfectly spherical, like a football. If there is a low number, like 0.25, it means that your eyes are nearly round but not quite. A higher number, like 3.00 shows that your eyes are quite oval in shape.

What does my eye test result mean?

Those figures are the prescription for glasses, not the result of your test.
Opticians are the people who make glasses. You were tested by an Optometrist or an Ophthalmologist.

I don't know of any state that permits an Optometrist to prescribe or instill drops.

Call whomever did the exam and ask for the information you want.

There is nothing to be scared about. You, clearly, were examine by a physician who knows what he is doing.
