BMW e46 odometer speedometer mpg not working?
I have a 99 BMW E46 and today the speedometer was going all the way up to 155 mph then it stopped working all together and then I noticed that the odometer and mph wasn't working either I have tired to look it up but every one days if it's the wheel sensor the abs and traction control light would be on but their not it's just my odometer speedometer and mpg not working I took the wheel sensor out and cleaned it it didn't look and I put it back in but it's still not working also whole I was driving the battery light came on for a little while I don't knew I'd that had any thing or not to do with it please help

Hi More than likely it is the spped sensor or the gears that drive it. Go back to the end of trans or transfer case and remove the 11 mm bolt that holds assembly in trans. Check the gear for wear. if worn then replace and reinstall. if gear is ok the replace sender. The send can be tested by hooking your multimeter to it and look for ac voltage. I hope this helps. Speedometer and Odometer not working. 1998 Honda Accord Lx 5 Spd.?
I recently got my motor swapped out. I just started driving it yesterday and the odometer doesn't work neither does the speedometer. The odometer shows how many miles the car has but that is it. The closest reason i can think of for this problem is the thick ground wire running from the transmission to the frame is not there. Would this cause what I am experiencing? If not can someone let me know please? Thanks in advance :)

Speedometers and Odometers sometimes work in tandem but very often do not. It would depend on the specific model and options (possibly things such as stability control) on your vehicle but generally speaking most odometers will still track mileage even if the speedometer doesn't work. I believe they did work in tandem back when a cable off the output shaft of the transmission was the source of both readings but that is no longer the case with computerized cars.Each make and model can use a different combination of inputs to record mileage and display speed when they are computerized, as all modern cars are.Primarily, the wheel speed sensors from the ABS system are used along with a vehicle speed sensor. Some cars also have a transmission output shaft speed sensor. This is important because the error that causes the speedometer not to work may not affect the mileage. In my experience, it usually does not. Though I haven't encountered speedometer problem on a BMW lately, I recently saw a Volvo C70 whose speedo did not work but the odometer kept ticking. Replacing the vehicle speed sensor and testing all the ABS wheel speed sensors did not solve the problem... the speedometer problem was being caused by a failed ABS unit that needed to be replaced.This is just an anecdote to show that a multitude of factors affect the speedometer and they are not necessarily connected at all.

The drive between the front wheel and speedometer assembly is disconnected or broken. Why should that happen to a new vehicle? Mechanics taking the bike for a ride while trying to keep the odometer from incrementing?
2003 Ford Ranger speedometer and odometer not working; what's the problem?
"Ford's electrical system remains one of the worst in the car industry" ....and that's a quote I got from another owner of the same Ford Truck you own where his dome light wouldn't shut off. Is the speedometer an LED or manual?? ( digital? ) On older cars/trucks sometimes the speedo cable that runs from the wheel to the gauges is broken and has to be replaced but I'd guess it's either a fuse or a short somewhere. Check your fuses again. If it keeps blowing you have a short somewhere. After 11 years you might have some wiring problems. Might be time for a mechanic to check it out and they're not cheap anymore. Start by re-checking your fuses again.
If the speedometer does not work, will the mileage be affected?
no. The speedometer just measures how fast you are going. It is a cable that hooks up.. The only thing that will be affected is your driving record as you will not be able to judge speed and will likely get speeding tickets.
What is the reason for speedometer/odometer cable cut in RE std 350?
Hi, I am answering this coz I've faced this crisis multiple occasions. My Thunderbird 350’s odometer wire always kept tripping. I replaced it and again it tripped in a matter of weeks. Fortunately I knew a guy who was an expert on RE.He said: Your bike’s a complete mess. The mechanic who was working on my bike did not install the kit properly. So every 500km or so the meter section would go down. Now that I got it properly installed, it's been a year and it's dandy.Best part is, I even didn't need a new meter wire. He fixed mine with the old one that I thought to be broken.So, get your bike checked by a mechanic who can be trusted and who cares for his customers rather than his pocket.Happy Riding!!!!!
