What Education Dou You Need To Become A Metropolitan Police Officer

How do I become a police officer?

I have always wanted to be a police officer but never felt I had the character for it. Then I met a cop who told me it is not a big deal, just learn to shoot a gun and get in shape. So I have been working out every day and going for gun safety classes in a few months.

Right now I am looking for books, videos or any programs that are avalaible so I can be prepaired. If anyone has any information it would be much appreciated. Thank you

(UK) Do you get paid as a trainee police officer? (During the 2 year training period)

Hi, I hope this answer will clear up any confusion.Short answer: Yes — about £28k after 1 year.Longer answer:Firstly, the training period is about 12 weeks, then after the remainder of your first 2 years is your probation period. During your probation you are no longer training and are a full police officer, the only difference is that you will be with a more experienced colleague on the most part.As for the pay, this varies between forces and depends on the date of joining. If you work in London you get a bonus called London weighting. This is about £6,771 in year 1.If you was to be within your probation now, in the Metropolitan Police, the pay (not including London Weighting) is as follows:£22896 per annum during the first 12 week training period£23124 per annum for the remainder of year 1£24171 per annum for year 2£25224 per annum for year 3There are yearly increments untill:£38382 per annum at year 7This is where the pay stops increasing unless you climb the police ranks (sergeant, inspector etc)As somebody else answered, plain clothes, detectives specialist roles all get paid the same (depending on when they joined) as the pay is done yearly rather than by job role. The only exception is dog handlers who have a slight increase as they are required to pay for the care of their dogs. The only non paid police officers are called Special Police Constables and go through similar training and are also full police officers but they are unpaid aside from a small refreshments allowence. They are asked to volunteer their time a few hours a month while they can also work in full time employment elsewhere. It was once, for a short time, required that you be a special for 2 years before you can apply to join the Metropolitan Police Service, maybe this is where your question originates?I think it would be unfair to request probationers to go without pay for 2 years while also working full time!!Useful links:Careers | The MetLife as a PC - Met PoliceWhat the Metropolitan Police Service say about being on Probation:“Over the two years you'll build your knowledge and gain confidence in your ability as a Police Constable. During the probationary period, you'll continue to be assessed and supported so that by the end of the two years you've developed the skills you need and are ready to work on your own. That's when you'll be recommended for confirmation of appointment.”

As for secondments to Foreign Police Forces you would have to find out if the Indian Police have any arrangement with London's Metropolitan Police Service.

How does one become a detective? Do you need college or is through promotion?

Your experience being a police officer?

Well, I just got my admission into the BLET program here at our community college beginning August 3rd. I'm planning on becoming a career police officer. I was wondering if I can hear about your experience as being a police officer? So far I've never met a police officer who didn't like their job.

Difference between Police, Sheriffs, and Highway Patrol?

These belong to 3 different levels of government (generally speaking).

Police officers, normally are city or municipal level law enforcement officers. They typically work for city police departments, schools, etc.

Sheriff Deputies, normally are employed by county sheriffs, which is an elected county official. They tend to patrol more rural areas, unless situated in a large metropolitan area such as Detroit's Wayne County. They also typically operate the county jail and provide courtroom security.

Highway patrol or state police, typically enforce law within the highways of a state. They may also operate a state crime lab, data base, and/or the communications for law enforcement through out the state. Different states have different uses for it's state law enforcement.

Whether a person is a city, county or state law enforcement officer, they generally have the same certification. Some states require that thier state law enforcement officers go to a state police academy, while others do not. Some places combine local and county police recruits in the same police academy, while others do not.

The Michigan State Police require all it's candidates to complete it's own academy, regardles of whether your previously certified as a police officer. The Nevada Highway Patrol will take other agencies ceritifications as long as they are consisitent with the same training guidelines.

Generally, most law enforcement jobs can be had without any college training, although it's becoming much more rare to find recruits without any college or military experience.

The best thing I can tell you is to get an associates degree and perhaps a couple of years in the military prior to getting into law enforcement. It will make your life alot better when you go out job hunting.

Good Luck.
