What Exactly Do Therapist Do

What exactly does a therapist do?

I am a therapist. You talk. You figure out the insight to your problems and you grow and work on them.

We don't do anything but listen and possibly give you other alternatives to think about but you do what you think is best for you. WE DO NOT TELL YOU WHAT TO DO! That is wrong.

Therapists are very supportive...do not judge and do not say...you should have done this and that or even tell you are wrong. They help guide you in what you want to do with your life.

You do grow from it. It is work..and it takes honesty if you want help....and it is up to you to bring up the subjects and ask for help.

If you are not honest in therapy...you are wasting your money. NO one can help you but yourself...but people that are professional in this area know how to ask questions that make you think and talk. We ask open ended questions and want to know how you feel about something and why. Not for us...but so YOU can see what is inside and making you anxious and having the problems you are.

It can be a great experience and a not so great experience. If you don't like your therapist ask for another one. Not all therapists are created equal and not everyone is meant to like everyone...so trust is a big thing here. If you don't feel you can open up to someone for ANY reason...maybe you don't even like they way they look or you get a woman and you want a man....ASK for someone else.

another thing...if you go someplace with a group..ask to see the same person every time. Sometimes they switch you back and forth between people and you are constantly repeating to someone else what you already talked about and it is like spinning your wheels in mud.

SO get the same person all the time so they know you and you can start off where you left off and not start over each time.

Good luck...and happy therapy. It can make you happy and well...but again...YOU have to WORK at it and get the insight into your problems. You can do it with the help of someone to guide who can ask questions and give you options and sometimes even homework...like journaling.

What exactly does an art therapist do?

"Art therapy is also termed as creative therapy or expressive therapy. It is concerned with promoting psychological and physical well-being in patients. An art therapist is someone with professional training and certification in art therapy." http://www.wisegeek.com/what-does-an-art-therapist-do.htm

"Art therapists work in private practice and/or in clinical, educational and rehabilitative settings such as:
hospitals and clinics, residential treatment centres, long-term care facilities, community centres, prisons, shelters, schools, mental health and social service agencies" http://www.karenfreud.com/7816/

" "In most art therapy sessions, the focus is on your inner experience—your feelings, perceptions, and imagination. While art therapy may involve learning skills or art techniques, the emphasis is generally first on developing and expressing images that come from inside the person, rather than those he or she sees in the outside world. And while some traditional art classes may ask you to paint or draw from your imagination, in art therapy, your inner world of images, feelings, thoughts, and ideas are always of primary importance to the experience." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_therapy#What_Does_a_Typical_Art_Therapy_Session_Look_Like.3F

Snippits from web pages I found. I've included some extra pages below this as well (the bottom ones) Hope this helps.

How do therapists always know exactly what to say?

Ha ha. I notice you are anonymous, so I presume you are being sarcastic.Just in case I'm being overly suspicious, they never know what to say, and no one does, not even you, so how can you judge? Nor do they claim to know very much about anything except possibly how to conduct a psycho-therapy, and even then the variety of life will catch them out countless times. If they say something, they have to have thought first about what you told them, or what you communicated, and then if anything they consider might be helpful comes to them, then they have to have thought of a way to convey it to you - all that rather than ‘knowing’ anything. If they are Psychoanalytic, they will ask you to speak whatever comes into your mind - free association - the whole point of which is that no one 'knows' what will happen. Tolerating 'not knowing’ is what the whole training is designed to facilitate. If you have one who 'knows' exactly what to say to you that would be troubling. As a great psychoanalyst once said, admittedly of the reverse transaction, “The saddest words you'll ever hear in the consulting room are 'I know; I know'” [W. Bion]

How EXACTLY do i become a radiation therapist?

Ok to become a radiation therapist, you have to take some pre-requisites. You can take these at the community college. You have to take

PreCalculus (or College Algebra and Trigonometry)
Anatomy and Physiology
General Physics
English Composition I
English Composition II
American History or National Government
Psychology
Sociology
Speech or Oral Communications
Computer Fundamentals/Applications
Fine Arts
History of Civilization or World History

After all that, then you have to transfer into a professional school or any college that offers a "bachelor of science degree in radiation therapy". Then you take a test to become a registered radiation therapist.

Sounds like a lot of work but it will only take about 2 years. The average salary in the US is 57,000/year

If my therapist told me I have traits of BPD, what exactly does that mean?

Ask your therapist for clarification. What specific traits are they referring to? Do you meet enough of the criteria to be diagnosed? What are some ways you can cope with those traits in a healthy way?Helping you understand yourself and practice healthy coping mechanisms is what your therapist is there for. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and research on your own.Engage yourself and be an active participant in your recovery. It’s not always easy, but it is extremely rewarding and it makes a big difference.Best of luck!

What does a therapist do?

the things i am going to speak about are probably what a good therapist should do.a therapist sort of looks at everything you tell them. they analyze every single thing, they take things slow so you will be comfortable, i guess.they are there so you can let a lot of stuff out, stuff that maybe needed to come out, i guess. maybe a therapists is something we don't need , because there are a bunch of ways one can do to let stuff out. art stuff really helps, and its a lot of fun too. the mind is very interesting.if you decide to use art to heal all sorts of art stuff suddenly pops up, your mind probably attracts that. the world is seen with beautiful eyes.a therapists gives out a bunch of little things that might help you out in your healing process ,but like i said you can probably think of those things on your own ,i guess, if you really need someone to hear you maybe a therapist can be good.just remember there are tons of stuff one can do to just heal on our own. don't think you have a deadline to heal, you can heal at your own pace, that's why probably life is nice.remember that suicide is never an answer to anything. this life is worth living , imagine if you leave you wont be able to see all the beautiful things this life has to offer for healing.the therapist is expensive too, so sometimes i question the whole therapist thing. hope this helps.

Exactly what does my therapist mean when she says to "be mindful”?

I think you therapist is trying to encourage you to avoid habitual thought patterns. Very often we get into habits without really considering what we are doing. It is very easy to allow our thoughts to go on “auto pilot” and relinquish control of what is going on in our minds. Cigarette smokers are often said to have a “habit” because they will light a cigarette without being aware that they have done so.Our thoughts also become habitual. It's easier to think the same thoughts over and over again, so we do it. This works for many things, like pouring a glass of milk, or reminding yourself to wear your seat belt. But we often use habitual thought with other things that are less innocuous. These thought patterns may not be serving you well. Being aware of these thoughts will help you to be aware of yourself any any issues you have been discussing.

How does a therapist detach?

What exactly do you mean by “detach”? And what type of Therapist do you mean?As a psychologist you have to keep some distance, but you also have to feel and understand what the patient is going through, what is it doing to them and affecting their way of life.If you feel or want to know, can we actually be not affected by some of the people treated, then we really do not actually detach, (but that does not mean we take it home with us and forget all about it until the next session), If it is a very complex case that would need further study to try to work out a plan of the right treatment. In my cases I tried to keep away from using medication unless extremely necessary.Every case is bound to be different even if it has the same diagnosis. You cannot get emotionally involved or you would burn out very quickly. You have to learn to balance, it is the same as a doctor treating someone for something and eventually they die or cannot get better, but you keep looking for answers. You really cannot detach, unless you are in the business of just seeing people and taking their money, and just talking through things as if it were just another one on the production line.It is hard to actually tell you more as the question was very vague and no real info to explain what you are you asking about. But you hopefully get the idea of what we should be doing against what not doing in treatment.
