Modem stands for MODulator DEModulator and it was at one point the primary means of connecting users to the internet.  Modems basically took an analog medium (noises over a phone line) and converted them to a digital signal (10101011) acting as an OSI layer 2 or Data Link layer in the computers connection to the Internet. Transfer speeds ranged from 300 baud to 56,000 bits per second depending on where in the timeline the equipment was from, and the quality of the lines the users call routed through.  The limitation of 56kbps was a major contributor to other technologies rapidly supplanting the modem as the standard connection method.  Many users could do no better than 33.6kbps as they were restricted by the telco's equipment regardless of the modem's max speed.  The term modem has an expanded definition today as any device that connects the user to the providers network seems to be called a modem (Cable modem; DSL modem; etc.) regardless of whether the device actually fits the definition of a modulator/demodulator.  Many users unfamiliar with basic terminology refer to the PC case or tower as "the modem".

What does download speed mean, exactly?

Internet speeds are rated in megabits per second. 5 mbps = 5,000,000 bits every second

Download speeds are typically rated in kilobytes per second. A kilobyte is 1024 bytes.

There are 8 bits in 1 byte. So, let's convert your internet speed into kilobytes per second.

Your internet speed is 5 megabits per second:

5,000,000

Divide by 8 to get the number of bytes per second

5,000,000 / 8 = 625,000

Then divide that number by 1024 to get the number of kilobytes:

625,000 / 1024 = 610.3515625 kilobytes per second

So, about 610 KB/sec would be your theoretical maximum speed if you were getting the full 5mbps. So, if you're seeing 500 KB/sec downloads, then you're getting about 500/610 = ~82% of your rated download speed which is fairly decent. However, often times you'll never reach this speed due to many reasons. Overhead, noise on the line, lots of traffic on your neighborhood's node, etc. If you do an internet speed test (http://www.speedtest.net/) from a server located nearest you, that would be a better number to use to compare your download speeds to.
