What Exactly Is Computer Ram And Why So Many Different Styles And Prices

What is the difference between a laptop and a desktop computer?

A laptop is a personal computer that can be easily moved and used in a variety of locations. Most laptops are designed to have all of the functionality of a desktop computer, which means they can generally run the same software and open the same types of files. However, laptops also tend to be more expensive than comparable desktop computers. How is a laptop different from a desktop?Because laptops are designed for portability, there are some important differences between them and desktop computers. A laptop has an all-in-one design, with a built-in monitor, keyboard, touchpad (which replaces the mouse), and speakers. This means it is fully functional, even when no peripherals are connected. A laptop is also quicker to set up, and there are fewer cables to get in the way. You'll also have to the option to connect a regular mouse, larger monitor, and other peripherals. This basically turns your laptop into a desktop computer, with one main difference: You can easily disconnect the peripherals and take the laptop with you wherever you go.Here are the main differences you can expect with a laptop.Touchpad: A touchpad—also called a trackpad—is a touch-sensitive pad that lets you control the pointer by making a drawing motion with your finger.Battery: Every laptop has a battery, which allows you to use the laptop when it's not plugged in. Whenever you plug in the laptop, the battery recharges. Another benefit of having a battery is that it can provide backup power to the laptop if the power goes out.AC adapter: A laptop usually has a specialized power cable called an AC adapter, which is designed to be used with that specific type of laptop.Ports: Most laptops have the same types of ports found on desktop computers (such as USB), although they usually have fewer ports to save space. However, some ports may be different, and you may need an adapter in order to use them.Price: Generally speaking, laptops tend to be more expensive than a desktop computer with the same internal components. While you may find that some basic laptops cost less than desktop computers, these are usually much less powerful machines.Hope It HelpsPlease Upvote

What type of computer RAM should I get?

MT/s and MHz are used interchangeably in the context of memory here, where it refers to the bus speed.  The 1600 MT/s RAM will be the fastest, but more expensive and more power consuming, while the 1066 will be the slowest but the lowest power and cheapest. For all of your applications, the RAM speed isn't going to matter much, so the 1066 will be fine -- and you're probably better off going with only 4GB, as I don't see anything you do on there that would call for more than that.  In other words, the upgrade wouldn't make your system faster by any noticeable amount, so just save your money for a future upgrade. If you were a hardcore gamer, though, you would see a few extra frames per second by going for 8GB of 1600 MHz RAM, depending on how memory intensive the game is.I haven't seen a significant difference in the performance of Corsair vs. Crucial.  The only difference is probably in reliability, which I seriously doubt you'll have an issue with.

Why are the prices of computer hardware (like GPU, RAM) increased in 2018?

This is due to two main reasons — cryptocurrency mining and due to mobile phone manufacturing.Cryptocurrency mining requires high end computers to be profitable, and due to a sudden increase in popularity of a currency called ethereum, the demand for graphics cards shot up quickly, making their prices go up due to supply and demand imbalance. The second reason is that mobile phones have started using the same type of memory (RAM) that modern computers use, causing a global shortage for manufacturers of computer RAM, because mobile phone companies are much bigger than RAM manufacturers, so they can easily obtain the resources, but computer manufacturers struggle to do so.The first reason caused the GPU prices to increase, and the second one caused RAM prices to increase. The RAM pricing may come down within 2018, but graphics card prices will stay this way for some time, until either the cryptocurrency crashes or companies like AMD and Nvidia come up with a solution. Predictions are that the prices won't go down till at least Q3 2018.Hope this helps. Cheers!

What does RAM do on a computer?

I m looking to get a surface pro 4. There s quite a steep pricing difference between the 4GB RAM, 8GB RAM, and 16GB RAM.

Can somebody tell me what this means? I would be using this tablet strictly for digital art (if that is relevant)

Can you reuse the RAM used in a computer in another?

Lots of good answers but they’re a bit fixated on moving RAM forward into a new computer not “sideways”.Let me explain, most computers are not sold in their “fully loaded” form, they’re sold to give the best perceived value at a price point. I still see computers (especially laptops) selling with 4GB of RAM where 8GB is more optimal for the tasks a wide-range of folks would throw at the computer. Then why 4GB of RAM? It allows the computer company to meet a low “starting” price point.Moving RAM (and fixed storage) sideways allow you to upgrade another computer to a more optimal configuration. Currently if you use a computer for 3 or 4 years they can be hard to sell or donate. I had this issue in the near past with a couple of desktop computers I replaced at home. They were too old to sell for a price worth the hassle of eBay or Craigslist and they didn’t meet the technical requirements of local charities. However I did notice when attempting to donate the computers that the charity’s free internet access computer was the same make and model. On my way home it struck me that the charity’s computer was likely the base model and had 2GB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive where mine had 8GB of RAM and a terabyte of disk space. I called the charity and suggested I upgrade their computer using the components of my computer and they agreed.I went back the next day and installed the RAM and hard drive into their horribly slow computer, upgraded it to Windows 10 (from XP) and they are thrilled. I also left them a mainboard and power supply for spares. Voila, their computer’s lifecycle extended and less waste going off to the landfill.Reuse at the component level.

Is it possible to lose RAM from your computer?

If your computer is on for a long time (I mean days on end) or a high-performing game is being used for hours, the amount of available RAM will decrease as applications fill the RAM and don't completely erase what they've used. The best option is to turn off your computer at this point. When you reboot, you will have a fresh start with RAM.

To physically lose RAM is impossible unless someone opens the case while you sleep and steals modules, which would hurt the performance of your computer.

Depending on how much you want, RAM can cost between $20 and $60 and typically ranges in sizes from 512MB to 2MB per module at the current time.

One final note: if you do decide to add more RAM, all active modules on your computer must be equal size, such as 2-1GB modules. You cannot have a 1GB module and a 512MB module active at the same time.

What is the maximum memory capacity for a computer with DDR PC3200 memory slots?

There are a lot of depends ons....
depends on the Make & Model of your MOBO,
depends on your Operating system (32bit or 64bit),
depends on your BIOS.
Costs...
depends on where you buy it... the prices rage very widely across the board, online probably has the best prices... retailers like BestBuy... probably a lot more.
