What External Disc Drives Are Compatible With The New Imac

How do I get my Mac to recognize an external dvd drive?

External drives (CD or DVD) when connected to a Mac are not listed as a device in the Finder, until a disk (blank or media) is inserted in the drive.Once, inserted, and loaded, the media will appear as a disk in Finder. If it is a blank disk, either iTunes or Finder will let you know about that as well.If you have and it is not recognized, you have two options; 1. Open Disk Utility and see if the drive is recognized but not mounted. 2. Perform a SMC reset.Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your MacAfter the system restarts, try connecting the drive with media. If that works, good. If not, then as John Williams suggested earlier, take it to Apple (they are not called Apple Store anymore!).

Does the new iMac have a disc drive?

No. No Macs in Apple’s current lineup have an optical disc drive. Apple has gotten rid of them for good (setting a precedent with the MacBook Air back in 2008). If you really need to use old fashioned CDs or DVDs with your Mac, you can pickup an external SuperDrive from Apple so that you can use them. If you have a current-generation (late 2016) MacBook Pro or a 12-inch MacBook, you would additionally need an adapter to connect the USB port of the external SuperDrive to the USB-C port of the Mac.

What is the best external hardrive that is compatible with PC, iMac and iPhone?

Mobile phones are usually target devices, not host devices. What this means is that they cannot operate as computers connected to mass storage. In general, this is because most USB devices — which are thumb drives — require power from the host computer, and phones already have a massive power budget constraint, such that they would operate for half an hour or less under such load. There are external “camera connectors” for low power SD card and similar storage you’d use on a camera, and which are usually operated as pigtails off the docking port; however, realize that there are very few Apps which can talk to them, and they nearly universally expect FAT32 as the filesystem on the storage media.

How to install an external DVD writer to my iMac?

I just purchased the LG Ultra Slim DVD writer in the model SP60 and hooked it up to my new iMac (OS X 10.9.1)
It is connected with the USB cord that came with it and is obviously connected, because it opens and closes just fine. The instructions say it should work right away upon connecting, but no matter how many different DVDs/CDs/ blank discs I try, it just will not show up.

Help???

Why aren't new iMacs built with disk drives?

They do have disk drives, other wise they wouldn't boot up.But I assume you meant "optical" drives. No Apple devices ship with optical drives. There are many reasons for this, chief among them is that they allow all Macs to be thinner and operate with fewer moving parts. But more importantly, most people don't need one. Software no longer comes on CDs or DVDs; new versions of the OS are downloaded. In fact, any content you are likely to use would be downloaded. Also, you can buy a cheap external drive that also plays and writes(!) BluRay discs as well as DVDs and CDs for less than $100.

Replacing Stock Hard Drive On New (Late 2012) 21.5" iMac?

get a 1 TB external drive and go into the time machine app and the tutorial will tell you how to back up.
if you don't want to do that you can do one of 2 things.
1: open a finder window at the top of the sidebar there should be a section that says all my files highlight one of the files within then press command A This will highlight all the files. Then you copy and past into the back up drive.
2: on all Mac OS except linon and mountain lion there is a icon on the desktop that says Macintosh HD
click and drag this into the back up drive.

Either one of these may take a while due to high amounts of data I would sugest USB 3.0 drives but if you have the patience 2.0 will do just fine
