What Features Are In Traditional Cartooning Style

What are some differences between pirates of the past and pirates of today?

Pirates of the past have been romanticized, but they were ruthless and preyed upon other people for their own goals. They used sailing ships and had limited areas of endeavor. When caught red-handed, they were hanged.

Today's pirates are ruthless and prey upon others, but technology has given them weapons that can be far more destructive. Also, lawyers and other people who are concerned with the pirate's rights makes hunting them down more difficult. Their area of endeavor are much more wide-spread, and have expanded their crimes into white slavery and other crimes, such as extortion and kidnapping. They are not hanged when caught red-handed, and they are not hunted down with the ruthlessness that they were formerly.Technology makes it possible for several pirates in a small boat to endanger almost any size ship.

Drawing Gorillaz style?

Jamie Hewlett works in a more or less traditional cartooning style. If you live in America go to your arts and crafts store and look for Walter Foster books. Specifically look at and for the books on basic drawing, cartooning, and animation. In recent years American Syndicates have favored far more radical reinterpretations of the traditional styles than many overseas markets, and the Foster line of books does update their line constantly, but I have seen these books lately and the new ones do explain the principles as well as the old. After that, it is a simple matter of practice and of studying Jamie Hewlett's work and understanding how he reinterprets this (which practice will make much easier).

I know a lot of people are going to roll their eyes at this, but that is how you do it. Also look up Ed "Big Daddy" Roth who did a LOT of Hot Rod cartoons in the sixties. While there are differences in rendering, he is ONE OF Hewlett's influences.
