Some guidelines would be:
1 - Some of the sports drinks are gimmicks though others do contain essential electrolytes that are lost through sweat. Always read the ingredients.
2 - Eat plenty of protein after your workout. Protein assists in the bodys fittening & repair process that occurs during the 72 hours after your workout. Your muscles will then repair fitter and stronger.
3 - Listen to your own body. Its not always a case of eating more its usually more about altering the ratio of protein and carbohydrate and the times you eat them. Eat a carbohydrate based meal about 90 minutes before your work out for energy and protein afterwards for repair. Egg whites are the purest protein form going.
4 - Try to leave 72 hours apart from your weight workouts and do the cardio workouts inbetween. Do not do both workouts in one session as you will just end up with burn out.
Hope this helps. Do not give up, keep your routines varied. I have been an avid gym goer for 8 years now and the benifits it has provided for me are priceless. You just need to find your plateu that you can work and progress on. Everyone is different.

What would be good to eat before going to the gym?

Don't eat a large meal before you exercsie - well at least not sooner than 2 hours before anyway. After you eat your body likes to concentrate upon digestion therefore it cannot give you enough blood to support your requirements and you tire sooner.

The time to eat is during the 2 hours after exercise whilst the body is still on a high. Then the calories in your food get converted into muscle rather than fat. You should eat carbohydrate foods like baked potatoes with grilled fish or chicken and veg.

If you need to eat before you exercise then try an energy bar or a banana to give you that sugar rush before you start.

What are the best foods to eat while lifting weight to build muscle?

My brother is a personal trainer and he has built a ton of muscle by drinking protein shakes and eating lots of protein-rich foods. Some things I've seen him do:

- Makes milkshakes and adds whey protein powder to them
- Makes smoothies and adds whey protein powder to them
- Eats a LOT of meat, sometimes just lots of ground beef in a bowl (this I don't really think is all that healthy)
- 2 cans of tuna every night
- Eats a lot of eggs

- Eats many small meals per day, consistently (this is a good idea) providing his body with fuel.

Aside from the last item on the list, I personally don't think his diet is that healthy, but he does have the muscles. You can also get protein from healthier sources, like beans and tofu.

How can i keep myself from eating unhealthy, fattening food?

i dont think i eat too much junk food (maybe once or twice a week), but every once in a while i get a craving for chips, chocolates, etc. and after i eat them i regret not resisting the temptation. how can i stop

First of all, you need to know about yourself how much time you spending in the gym, how well you are performing, how intensively you are in, how badly you want and most of it what you want to achieve.As per your question you want to avoid weight lost while workout.In single word..Start eating, when i said start eating, it does not mean that you have to eat everything (Pizza, BURGER OR NY JUNK FOOD) you need to eat clean. How much you need to eat that really depends on you, like how much hard work you put in the gym. you need to know how much calories you are burning during exercising.When you workout, it's never effect on your body, workout help you to loose fat not Wight because it regain in muscle's so weight can be 90 kg even a Ton but only with your body muscle's.A man who belongs to village place hardly needs 2400 calories because what they are doing is "Extreme Hard work" on the other the one who lives in a city required more of the calories (2200 in a day)But if you workout in the gym then you need to consume 4000 to 5000 Calories  and carbohydrates with good protein sources to gain muscle and automatically it will help you to gain weight as well with good physique.Workout is something that gives you the strength to perform on your muscle's. What is good to eat after workout in the night?

I work out in the night as I am night person. I tried to workout in the mornings but it leaves me tired and sleepy the whole day. After I workout and come home, I go to bed in about 2 hours. Also it would help if you guys can tell me what I should eat on the nights when I don't workout.
My only problem is that I eat a big meal in then night and that includes carbs. I eat healthy though, no soda, no fast food. water and some gatorade for fluids. rice for carbs. chicken and fish for protein. peanuts and almonds as snacks. But I eat most of these in the night and I have realized that this is not helping me become lean.
I regularly work out about every other day and have seen results as I have a decent muscle definition on my upper and lower body. but my core is not lean. I have tried to eat less in the night but sometimes I am really hungry and have trouble sleeping in the night coz I am hungry. I try hard but the eating at night is killing me so guys please help me out
