What Gauge Is My Speaker Wire

What gauge speaker wire should be used on the inside of a subwoofer box/enclosure?

Unless you have a really small amp, 16 gauge wire is probably too small for the subwoofer wire. The maximum current carrying capacity of 16 gauge wire is about 15A.

With a highly efficient Class D amp, it's usually best to use speaker wire the same size, or perhaps one gauge smaller, than the power/ground. Terminals on most subs can accomodate up to 8 gauge. 12 gauge would be about the minimum recommended.

What gauge speaker wire do i need for my subs?

I have a legacy la 789 1000 watt amp and 2 Legacy LPW1099 10-Inch 1000 Watt Predator Series Subwoofer. Currently i have 18 gauge wire going to both subs and im not satisfied with the sound its producing i feel like there should be more bass. One of my friends who is pretty good with this type of stuff says that i need bigger gauge speaker wire. He says i should go with around 12 gauge speaker wire. But everything i have looked up online says that since my amp is only about 6 inches away from the subs.. that i can get away with using as small as 22 gauge wire since there is minimal power loss. Does anyone know for sure what gauge wire i should use?

8 gauge for speaker wire on subwoofers?

8 gauge wire is 8 gauge wire. No difference at all. You can use that just fine. I've seen some folks go as big as 4 gauge as speaker wire in high powered subwoofer installs, but that's a bit over the top.

What gauge wire do I need for 4 ohm 100 watt RMS speakers?

No special cable you can spend a whole lot of money for will do even a slightly better job of anything but “bragging rights” than standard #18 lamp cord from your local hardware store.Copper wire is copper wire. All copper wire is “oxygen free high conductivity”(OFHC), because if it isn’t, it’s too brittle to use for any sort of wiring, whether for household power outlets, or speakers, or anything else.TL:DR: There is no such thing as “speaker wire” except in name and cost.

What size speaker wire should i use for my L7?

Richard and twizted, you 2 did not read the question correctly at all. This is about speaker wire not power wire.

To all, a cap DOES NOT STOP HEAD LIGHTS FROM DIMMING. All 3 of you go learn what a cap does and doesn't do, because it is not going to add more electricity to the system at all, not now and not ever.

Use 12 gauge speaker wire. A cap is not going to do anything for you. All a cap does is stiffen the electrical current to the audio system, and that is only after the electrical system is producing enough power for the car to operate and all accessories to operate safely. Do the Big 3 upgrade and get a better battery.

What gauge speaker wire do i use with a bose acoustimass 6 system?

If you are running less than 30 feet then 16 gauge is fine..30 to 50 feet use 14 gauge. the gauge of the cable really doesn't matter much contrary to belief and stores selling monster cable. It is actually the distance that should determine the gauge.

What gauge size speaker wire should i use for speakers and subwoofer?

At 15' for your speakers 18 awg would be adequate - virtually no losses.

If you have a 4 ohm svc sub your amp will be producing a lot less than 1100w. If that's the case 12 awg will be fine. If it's a dual 4 you're wiring for 2 ohms, 12 awg should still work okay, but get 10 if you want to go the extra mile.

What are the differences between a 12 and 14 gauge wire? How are they utilized?

The difference is the diameter or ‘thickness’ of the wire. A larger diameter wire can carry more amperage increasing current load on a given circuit, which is important with modern electrical appliances and the demand they put on a circuit. In example microwave ovens, require a minimum of 15 amps, if you are operating a microwave on a circuit wired with 14 gage wire, and also try to operate a circular saw requiring 15 amps then the circuit breaker protecting the circuit will overheat and kick out, shutting down the circuit. The circuit breaker kicks out because the demand for amperage is more than is available on the 14 gage circuit. The maximum amperage that a 14 gage circuit can carry is 15 amps.A 12 gage circuit can carry a maximum of 20 amps which in the modern home is needed for the demands made of the circuit. It is important to use adequate sized wiring in any electrical installation to prevent overheating of the wires which could under certain circumstances cause a fire.Microwave ovens should be on their own dedicated 12 gage circuit. If the oven uses 15 amps while operating then a 20 amp breaker should be used for circuit protection, but one should consult with a licensed electrician before installing any electrical appliance.

Can different gauge speaker wires damage your speakers?

"bigger wires wont have any resistance to the sound coming through them, so if they are too big the speakers will sound not as clean."

Complete rubbish.

"If u use a speaker wire that cannot carry the ammount required by ur speaker ur speakers will blow."

More rubbish.

You can use whatever gauge of wire that you want, from very thin to very thick, without fear of damage to your 'speakers.

If the wire is of a very heavy gauge you might just possibly hear an improvement in the bass frequencies, but I doubt it very much.

Thinner wire will have a slightly higher resistance and this reduces what is know as the "damping factor" of the amplifier/loudspeaker combination. The result being that bass frequencies are not so well controlled.

But I bet you don't detect any difference whatever wire you use.
