So basically, i'm getting a haircut today, and i'm planning on getting it scene hair. Like I already have layers and stuff but they're really long now. And I have a slight idea on what to say like 'short choppy layers at the top and long layers at the bottom' but i'm still not sure. ESPECIALLY FOR THE FRINGE! How do I get a perm out of my hair?
A perm* is hair service in which the hair is rolled on rods, and a chemical, usually ammonium thioglocolate, is applied to the rolled hair and allowed to sit for a prescribed amount of time. This first chemical breaks disulfide bonds within the structure of the hair, preparing it to take its new shape. The thio is rinsed away throughly while the rods are still in, because at this point the hair is very fragile and soft. A neutralizer is a applied which locks the keratin into its new shape, and rinsed away, and the the rods are removed.At this point, your old hair shape is gone. It has been permanently restructured from the inside. The only way to truly remove it is to cut it off.There are two options if you've received a perm you dislike. Option one is to blow dry and straighten your hair after you wash it, so the curls cannot be seen anymore. Water and heat also weaken disulfide bonds, temporarily. The perm will still be there. You'll require a hair dryer, flat iron, brushes, and heat protecting styling products. There are youtube videos to teach you how to blow dry and straighten if you are unfamiliar with techniques.The second option is to call the stylist and see if they can loosen the perm. If your hair is in good condition, the stylist can apply the same perm solution as before, but either with larger perm rods or by applying it to your loose hair and combing it through until the curls loosen, and then neutralizing it into this looser shape. This will not make your hair straight again and could cause more damage.I would recommend the healthier and cheaper blow-dry styling option over the re-perming option.*As an aside, a sodium hydroxide relaxer is sometimes called a perm, because it permenantly straightens the hair. Sodium hydroxide is in no way compatible with ammonium thioglocolate and will cause catastrophic damage to the hair if the two are layered over one another. The same rules apply, though. Once the disulfide bonds are broken by sodium hydroxide, they cannot return to their natural state unless grown out and cut off.
