What Happen If I Eat Toxic Nut

What happens if you eat too many nuts?

As with many food questions, it's funny how many answers you'll get that are largely speculation. I don't know offhand of any actual research on eating too many nuts, but a 30-year Harvard study of 119,000 people found that people who ate seven servings a week were 20 percent less likely to die. I personally must get at least twice that amount (sorry for being anecdotal here) and weigh the same as I did in high school back in the 1960s. As I'm fond of saying, my cholesterol level is lower than my IQ, and slightly more than half is HDL, the "good" cholesterol. Nut eaters are also less likely to be obese.A cursory search tells me that cashews do not contain cholesterol. Nuts do contain phytosterols that compete with cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol is poorly absorbed and is not the main cause of high cholesterol anyway.Brazil nuts are indeed one of the richest sources of selenium, which is toxic in excess. The amount is highly variable but could be 90 micrograms per nut (544 per ounce), and the U.S. "tolerable upper limit" is 400 micrograms per day.My opinion is that most people would not have an easy time gaining weight by eating raw nuts that they actually chew (vs. running through a blender or eating as a nut butter) and that have not had some high-calorie substance, like oil, added to them. The barriers would be chewing and digesting the nuts without getting bored/tired or nauseated. Fatty foods are pretty satisfying for most people, given that they eat slowly enough for the body to know what hit it (cf. the pistachio principle). On the other hand, people do vary, don't they?

My 10mth old dog may have eaten one macadamia nut. What will happen if she did and how will I know?

If she did it shouldn't hurt her, she should just pass it. My dog ate a rock and he passed it, of course blood was involved, but he is fine. If you really worried about it you could call a vet office and tell them that she may have eaten the nut and ask them if you should be concerned.

My 6 MO puppy ate half a walnut and the shell from the ground. I was told it could poison him.?

Call your vet. They'll be able to tell you what to watch for, when, and how you can try and prevent it. Both Macadamia nuts and walnuts can be toxic.

I found several sites, but these look like they give the best information:

"Walnuts....especially Black Walnuts and Black Walnut Wood

If you're a wood worker you should know that walnut wood can be quite toxic to pets. Horses are also at risk if the shavings are used in the stall. And walnuts left on the ground are potentially toxic...especially if starting to mold or rot:

Moldy walnut poisoning occurs after a rain and walnuts become infected with mold that produces toxins. If ingested by your pup, the animal can become very ill and possibly die. Symptoms include vomiting, drooling, and neural signs such as trembles, seizure, and in coordination. Keep walnuts picked up and do what ever is necessary to keep your dog(s) from chewing on them. "

How many shelled Brazil Nuts are safe to eat each day?

I've been paranoid about Brazil Nuts ever since I saw that House episode about selenium toxicity so today I decided to finally look it up:According to Dietary Supplement Fact Sheet: Selenium from the NIH-ODS, "Brazil nuts contain very high amounts of selenium (68–91 mcg per nut) and could cause selenium toxicity if consumed regularly", and Tolerable Upper Intake Levels of selenium for adults is 400mcg, it looks like 4-6 nuts per day is the safely recommended maximum. The good news is that the damage is not permanent if you stop eating Brazil Nuts as soon as you notice that your hair is falling out and your skins and nails turning brittle and flaky.
