What Happends If You Over Fill Your Gas Tank

Can you OVERFILL your gas tank??

The gas "gun" will "click" off when gas backlashes to it.

So, done properly (gasing up) no you can't.
(unless the "gun" is very defective, and at that point, it would be dangerous for the gas station. I've never heard of this ever happening)

But if you pull the gun out as it's filling (on purpose), then you'll fill the tank until the gas in up the pipe that leads to the tank, and start dribbling over the side of your car, which isn't good for the paint.

But, as you drive, this gas will go down into the tank as you'll be using some.

What happens when you overfill your gas tank?

It won't really hurt the cars engine, but it will be a bit tough on the paint, you should rinse it off as soon as possible. There is also a little safety hazard, should someone toss a lit cigarette near the car, because it will drain the excess gas down through the overflow onto the ground, making your vehicle a blowtorch waiting to be lit off.

What happens when you overfill your gas tank?

nothing...i fill mine up completely until it is at the brim of the neck...where i can see that it is full. never hurts anything, just puts the fuel gage needle on the peg.

What happens if you overflow your gas tank?

Nothing, honestly.. Just a mess. The only reason the gas station says to not top off, is because sometimes the pump will remove the overfilled fuel through tiny holes, and then it goes everywhere.. Causing a dangerous place to be. But, it wont harm your car.. Just make sure you wipe it off the paint, because the gas is like a paint thinner.

Overfilled gas tank?

If you over filled it then some fuel will run down the filler tube and drip under your car for a little while. Also there is a small drain hole in the bottom of the fuel filling compartment that will let excess fuel drain out. Which it will also fall to the ground. The only worry would be the paint. If some fuel got on the paint just make sure you wash it and don't leave it on there. There won't be any real problems or damage due to the overfilling.

Can your car leak if you overfill the gas tank?

Long story.. We took the car in to the garage when we noticed that the tank was leaking. They buggered it up to the point where the gauge doesn't work. We were out getting gas and the guy overfilled it. Now it stinks of gas and it's dripping out under the car. Is this a problem? The car is a 1999 Cavalier. I only noticed the new leaking this morning.

What happens when you overflow your gas tank?

Not likely. I believe you have other problems.

What happens if radiator coolant gets in the gas tank?

Highly unlikely, unless maybe a child messing around or an act of revenge. However the effect of coolant in a gas tank, would depend on the amount added. Since gasoline or diesel is refined from crude oil, it is oil based and has a lower specific gravity than water. Coolant is basically a modified alcohol so it is water based, with a higher specific gravity than gasoline. What that means is if you have a combination of gasoline and coolant in the same container, in this case the fuel tank, the gasoline is going to float to the top of the coolant, and the coolant is going to sink to the bottom. Since the pickup is always at the bottom of the tank, your fuel system will not receive any gasoline, until the water has been pumped out first. If it is a very small amount, you may not even notice anything other than maybe the engine cranks a little longer to start than usual. But if there is a lot of coolant, the engine may not start at all. But basically, if it was just a small amount, nothing will happen. If it is a large quantity, the engine will fail to start, could plug the injectors, and since water conducts electricity the power leads to the electric fuel pump and fuel gauge could be shorted out causing a malfunction of one or both. I would say the max amount of coolant that could be dumped into a gas tank without necessitating repairs would be about a half gallon in an average size tank. At that amount or below, top the tank off with 91 octane and drive it. More than half a gallon, the tank should be drained, cleaned, and dried thoroughly, then filled back up with fresh fuel. Hope that answered your question....

What happens when you overfill the radiator reservoir tank?

Not much will happen in most cars. As the liquid heats it will expand & run out the overflow tube. This might happen a few times but sooner or later it will get down to the proper level.Keep an eye on the coolant level that too much doesn't overflow out. If it gets low when the engine is cool add a wee bit to bring it to the proper level. And remember: be sure to read the instructions carefully … some 'antifreeze' is premixed, while some brands come full strength. The unmixed coolant doesn't absorb & transfer heat as well as properly mixed coolant. If your coolant is full strength mix water with the coolant in the amount shown on the jug's instructions panel. If already pre-mixed don't dilute further. Finally, if you're putting new coolant in the cooling system don't forget to open the heater control to fully open when you drain the old coolant, then leave it open when adding the new coolant.. The heater core inside the cabin is like a second radiator … heated coolant flows from the engine to the heater core & transfers heat from the coolant into the cabin. Failing to open the heater control can cause air to enter the cooling system which can result in engine overheating, possibly causing a blown head gasket or even a cracked block or head.
