What Happened To My Sense Of Smell

What happens to a person when sense of taste and/or smell are lost?

Head injury and certain other medical conditions can cause one to permanently lose the sense of smell. People who have lost their sense of smell complain that food doesn’t taste good or normal anymore. They use the word “taste” even though they have lost their sense of smell because most of the attributes we call taste are really odors coming out of food in our mouth.Although food doesn’t taste good anymore for these people, they don’t tend to lose or gain weight.Pure loss of the sense of taste is less common. Some people lose their sense of taste from part of their tongue following surgical treatments but you would have to sever several separate nerves to completely remove this sense. People who have lost the sense of taste on part of the tongue may not be aware of it.There is a condition called dysgeusia in which people have very persistent metallic or other tastes regardless of what is in their mouth. Certain drugs and diseases can cause this. Certain diseases can damage the tongue and lead to loss of taste in addition to or instead of dysgeusia. This is generally unpleasant and spoils the ability of the person to appreciate food. I don’t know whether these people lose weight and it would be hard to tell if any weight change is due to the underlying disease or the drug the person is taking.

What happens if i "surpress" my sense of smell for a long time?

Even since i was a kid, i thought smell was too much for me to handle, so ive been trying to suppress my sense of smell. Its been 7 years, but it seems my sense of smell has gotten sharper. I cant sell what something is exactly because i never trained my nose, but i could approximate. I thout my bathroom smelled like ketchep...I think my chemical receptors cant pick up things so well. Purfumes are the reason why i want to surporess my nose. Even thought i cant tell exactly what something is, its overwhelming for me. I dont faint or anything, i jsut feel like i cant breath.

Why have I lost my sense of smell?

You have already discussed with a physician so some of the things I describe may have already been addressed.Head trauma would have caused a sudden loss of sense of smell rather than a gradual one. So that isn’t likely.Anything that can obstruct airflow to the olfactory epithelium can reduce or block your sense of smell. I presume that the MRI and camera you mentioned showed no obstruction but you might want to confirm that with your doctor.Sounds like your hay fever isn’t severe enough to block air flow but it might be worth your while to consult with an allergist. You should discuss, with your physician, any medications or drugs you are taking or have taken and any medical treatments you might have had. Theoretically, exposure to chemicals or radiation in the workplace could cause anosmia but that kind of thing is uncommon nowadays. The MRI you mentioned would probably have revealed a tumor so that isn’t likely. You might want to consider consulting with a specialist. In the USA there are several clinics that focus exclusively on taste and smell. Many cases of anosmia aren’t treatable but it could be a symptom of something else. You are not likely to die soon despite what your link says.

Will my sense of taste and smell come back?

On July 2nd I came down with a bad cold and ended up going to the doctor on July 5th. The doctor told me I had a sinus infection and prescribed me a 6 day Azithromycin treatment. It was a little package of 6 pills. I had to take the first 2 the first day and then 1 every day for the 4 days after. She also prescribed Promethazine with Codeine syrup for my cough and to help me sleep. I had forgotten to mention to her that I had lost my senses of smell and taste the day before on July 4th. ( Maybe even sooner than that and didn't realize it.) So I looked it up and everything said it was normal to lose while you have a bad cold and that once you're better it should come back. 5 days after my doctor visit I was a lot better. I could breathe through my nose again but still didn't get my senses back. I called the doctor and told her my worries and she told me it was normal that if it didn't come back in another week or two to give them a call back. I'm really worried because sometimes I can smell strong smelling things but only a tiny bit. Like mopping fluids like PineSol or Fabuloso or pool Chlorine. They are very strong smelling, but I can just barely tell they're there. Everything else I can't smell. I'm really worried.

I lost my sense of smell can i get it back?

Good morning,
so i lost my sense of smell for a long time now (probably more than 10yrs). I can TASTE food and somehow i can smell menthol (i think because its very similar to the taste. When it goes to your nose after eating a menthol gum for example if that make sense?)
however i cant smell anything else no matter how strong the scent is. i can only feel if its strong only (e.g. perfumes) but cant know if its good or bad. I went to a hospital and the doctor had no idea what was the problem because she thought if i could taste then i should be able to smell as well. then she decided that i take an MRI as i might have a tumor that prevents the scent from going to my brain. i didn't do it for different reasons. a story is worth mentioning is that when i was a child my mother gave me a cold medicine that was for adult by mistake. I am a 24y male. any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!!!!!

What would happen if a human suddenly gained a powerful sense of smell, like a dog?

Lol…there might be a lot of nauseous people. We could help other people the same as dogs do. Sniff out cancer, drugs, bombs, bad food before it's accidentally eaten, just to name a few. It would certainly create new jobs.
