What happens if I delete iCloud backup?

You get more space on iCloud, and if you don't have some other backup it will be a bit more of a pain to bring your phone back if you to reset it. It's not that big of a deal. Between iCloud and Dropbox I don't restore from backup when I get a new phone. It's like spring cleaning. I just start over every time and it pretty easy to do.But…. If you are not backing up all you important data some other way, then back up your phone. For example. Even though iCloud has my photos, I still download full size copies to my Mac. I also have all the Dropbox folders synced to the Mac. The Mac has a time machine backup (local) and a backblaze backup (remote). I also clone the hard drive every 3 months or so and put that in my fireproof safe.

I had some backups in iCloud from my old iPhone. I came back to get my stuff and it was all gone. My iCloud storage was full, then when I came back it was empty and there were no backups. What is the backup for iPhone and what happens if I delete the backup in settings to free up some space? It’s a 3GB and I really need some space.

TL;DR: Deleting your backup won't give you more space, since it is stored on iCloud, not your phone. If you're looking at a backup from your iPhone’s settings, then it must be an iCloud backup. In addition to the storage you get on your phone for apps, music, photos etc., you get some storage on Apple’s online cloud service, iCloud. This is for sharing things between your iDevices, like backups. A backup is what you use to restore your phone or save your data when things stop working. If you need a new phone, you can use the backup from your old phone to transfer your data and settings. Deleting this will not affect the amount of space on your phone, because it is stored in the cloud. If you do delete it though, I recommend making a backup with iTunes on your computer, just in case something goes wrong. Thanks for the A2A!
