Study: Immigrants vital to economy even amid budget crisis

The 2008 purchasing power of California's Latinos was $249 billion and $162.8 billion for Asians, the highest of any state in the nation.

Immigrants in California pay roughly $30 billion in federal taxes, $5.2 billion in state income taxes, and $4.6 billion in sales taxes each year.

The average immigrant-headed household contributes a net $2,679 annually to Social Security, which is $539 more than the average US-born household.

The report states that Latinos and Asians account for more than one-quarter of California's businesses and buying power. In addition, most native-born Californians have experienced wage gains from immigration, according to "New Americans Vital to Golden State Economy: California's Immigrants, Latinos, and Asians are a Political and Economic Powerhouse."

How do immigrants help the economy in the United States?

We allow all people into our country to go to our schools, to use our resources and then it is used against us in acts of terror. We can no longer accommodate the strains on healthcare and our eductional system by allowing unrestrained immigrants into our country. Granted we fought for it and it once belonged to Mexico, but they haven't turned it into what it is today, the U.S.A. If left to them it would be just like Mexico, almost a third world country. It is time to think of our citizens and our safety instead of trying to be altruistic to those that drain our resources and are a threat to our safety. VOTE YES ON BORDER FENCES! IT IS TIME, HOW MANY MORE 9/11's do we have to have?

Households headed by illegal aliens imposed more than $26.3 billion in costs on the federal government in 2002 and paid only $16 billion in taxes, creating a net fiscal deficit of almost $10.4 billion, or $2,700 per illegal household.

Among the largest costs are Medicaid ($2.5 billion); treatment for the uninsured ($2.2 billion); food assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC, and free school lunches ($1.9 billion); the federal prison and court systems ($1.6 billion); and federal aid to schools ($1.4 billion).

With nearly two-thirds of illegal aliens lacking a high school degree, the primary reason they create a fiscal deficit is their low education levels and resulting low incomes and tax payments, not their legal status or heavy use of most social services.

Why does Britain need immigrants?

Firstly, it depends how you define 'need'. Other nations, most notably Japan have decided that they don't need immigrants - the results of that decision are yet to be determined. But it's safe to say that there are several benefits to immigration that some would call necessities for the economy. The pension pyramid scheme. Our economy is built on the idea that when we retire others will be working to pay tax that pays our pension. The problem is that we are now have loads more old people and loads less young ones being born. So we get in immigrants to do the working and tax paying. There is some evidence for greater innovation among immigrants than natives. That when people move here they often start businesses.Ensures that key jobs like nurses and doctors are filled. This is a more contentious one, as it could be claimed to only help the rich at the expense of the poor - it keeps the flow of labour plentiful and so ensures pay doesn't rise too high at the bottom. This helps export buisnesses stay competitive, it keeps many commodity prices lower but it also reduces the income of the working class and the money flow in the economy.Of course there are cultural impacts from high immigration too, and the country has been and continues to be changed drastically by immigration, but with the economic and demographic situation we are in and the particular interests who are dominant in politics, as well as a two party electoral system which hinders any insurgent parties, I don't see much chance of this changing.

How have social fragmentation, cultural diversity, and economic conditions shaped South Asia?

years of colonialism.

What do British people think of Scandinavian immigrants?

We think of them highly favourably. Most of them are polite, nice and educated.Culturally we are highly similar so they usually face no problems when living here. Furthermore most Scandinavians speak impeccable English so there are no language barriers.Scandinavian nations have a similar socio-economic status as the UK. Scandinavians have grown up in a developed and affluent country so when they come to the UK they are equipped for living and contributing to this country. For example Scandinavian immigrants to the UK are likely highly educated and skilled, this is great for the UK as we have a highly developed advanced economy. Our economy is mainly services-based with most of the jobs in this country being in banking, finance and law. After services, most jobs are in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) fields. So due to the excellent Scandinavian education system, most Scandinavians probably have these skills so can contribute immensely to the British economy. One thing I would say though is that there aren’t that many Scandinavian immigrants in the UK even with EU freedom of movement. I guess this is probably because the standard of living is a tad higher in Scandinavian nations.

Is immigration good for the United Kingdom?

Yes, absolutely.By and large the kind of people who get off their butts to improve their life by moving to a different country are the people you want living in yours. While it's impossible to deny that some welfare tourism exists, it is invariably over-emphasized because people who are too lazy to make a better life for themselves at home are generally not going to go to all the effort of moving elsewhere to do it either. It's much easier to whinge and complain and blame everybody else while staying in exactly the same rut you have been stuck in for the last twenty years.First-generation immigrants are often harder-working, more motivated and more flexible than the incumbent population. They are frequently prepared to work for less money too, which makes the local economy leaner and brings down the cost of living. The only people who have anything to worry about are those who want to carry on extracting above-market wages for jobs that someone else is prepared to do for less. It's tough on them but better for the rest of us.Immigrants come seeking opportunity, not an easy life. By making more of those opportunities than the ungrateful and entitled people who already live here, they improve our economy and our society.

What can be done about mass immigration in Britain?

What can be done about mass immigration? We can all be honest about it. Is it really a thing? Is there really *mass* immigration? Are there more people coming into the country that we are comfortable with? If so, we can be honest about what it is that we are uncomfortable with. There are more people of British origin abroad, than there are people of foreign origin in Britain. Most immigrants to the UK come from the EU. Of the rest, most come from the United States and Australia. Most immigrants to the UK are young, educated, and entrepreneurial. Most immigrants to the UK return to their home countries after a few years. Those that go back, go back with positive associations with Britain. Immigrants contribute more to the economy, not just in terms of the work they do, and the money they spend in the local economy, but in terms of the taxes they pay, than the local population. They take less out of it in terms of benefits. Immigrants contribute disproportionately  more to society and culture than their populations would suggest. Britain is a knowledge economy, a service economy. People drive this economy. People are by far our largest asset. Compared to, say, natural resources. Agriculture, for example, makes up only about 2% of the economy. We have an aging population, a shrinking workforce, and yet a welfare state with growing expectations of spending, that relies on young people contributing into it.
