What Ia The Other Name For Pontiac

What are nicknames for the Pontiac GTO?

As with other cars, Americans have a tendency to reduce the names to a single syllable word. A Corvette becomes a 'vettte, and the Mustang a 'stang. The Barracuda was reduced to 'cuda, eventually influencing Plymouth to refer to the performance models as 'Cuda by 1968.

Goat became the single-syllable name for the Pontiac GTO. The original source for using Goat is unknown, as it quickly caught on. A number of sources attribute the name to a reversal of the last two letters in the GTO acronym (GOT) with a long vowel sound applied to the "O."

•A casual practice of automotive subcultures is to relate personality traits to vehicles, which may or may not be related to the acronyms of the automobile's name. In keeping with ''The Goat," and because the animal is known for eating anything, the Pontiac GTO is attributed to "eat anything on the street" as a reference to its power and ability to beat other cars when racing. The acronym for GOAT has been turned into "Gas Oil And Tire" burner, which is both complimentary and derogatory. Those who had a GTO probably spent time and money purposely burning the three resources, while those who did not have the privilege pitch the phrase as sour grapes.
Pontiac's Tiger
•In 1965 Pontiac teamed up with U.S. Royal's new line of Tiger Paw Tires for joint advertising and an exclusive line of tires only available on the new model GTOs. Reusing tiger-themed advertising, Aaron Severson of AteUpWithMotor recalls that Pontiac created the "GeeTO Tiger" as a nickname planned to continue marketing the GTO as the Tiger. "Despite Pontiac's heavy promotion of the tiger theme," the public's affection for "The Goat" dominated but failed to "amuse GM senior management in the slightest." TopSpeed notes that "The Goat" had a strong public footing by 1966. Pontiac never used the name in advertising as any plans had been "vetoed by upper management, which was dismayed by its irreverent tone."

What are the rocker arm and other torque specs for 1999 Pontiac Grand Am 3.4L V6?

I will look it up for you when you I go back to work... I have access to Alldata. I have a 3.1L and I believe mine were 39 ftlbs, but don't toque to that spec, i just think they were that. I assume you're doing a Lower intake gasket, if you are the only things that really need torqued are the manifold bolts and the rocker arms. Make sure not to tighten the valve cover bolts too much of the gasket won't seat properly. Ohh and make sure that you put the pushrods back in the right place.. they are different legnths and it DOES matter.

I know on my 3.1L there is no valve adjustments. Just torque and go, don't have to rotate engine to get valves off the cam lobes or anything. Pretty easy all in all.

My engine is a 1998 just for your info, so same generation of engines.

Sorry my internet went down last night, I got the specs for you:

rocker arms - 124 inlbs + 30 deg
lower manifold bolts - four steps for em
there are four vertical bolts in the center
there are four diaganol bolts near the sides
now the steps:
1. Tighten vertical bolts to 62 inlbs(7Nm)
2 Tighten Diag Bolts to same
3. Tighten vertical bolts to 115 inlbs(13 Nm)
4. Tighten Diag to the same

Remember always tighten in a spiral pattern outward from the center....

All these specs/procdures should be followed for correct gasket sealing :)

Nothing else higher up really matters ... just don't overtighten the other gaskets so that they will seat properly.

Any other questions just ask.

Pontiac 400 engine is it big block or small block?

There are big blocks and small blocks, but almost all Pontiac engines between 326-455ci are the same size externally. So the 400 is just a 400ci Pontiac big bore engine, it is not a small block or a big block despite common belief.

On the other hand, Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler engines are classified as big blocks and small blocks. For instance, the 350 Chevy is a small block and a 454 is a big block. Chevy even made a small block that displaced 400ci from the factory. There are some smaller big blocks also such as the 352 Ford and 348 Chevy.

It is very confusing sometimes.

What do the different Pontiac badges mean?

They are just trim levels that Pontiac made up.

GT used to mean "Gran Turismo" which is Italian for "Grand Touring" (a sporty car) but it's become generic over the last 20 years. GTP and GXP are permutations that really have no meaning.

SSEi is a permutation of "SE" which used to stand for "Special Edition" but no car with SE really was anything special anyway - less so now.

GTO has the "Omologato" added to GT which means "certified" in Italian. That meant the car was certified for a certain race, since many races require certain criteria to be met (like production). The original Ferrari was like that; Pontiac's car was just a copy of the name.

Is Pontiac a good car manufacturer?

Pontiac has never been a stand-alone manufacturer.  It was created as a brand by General Motors in the 1920s, and, while it may have had a few distinct cars at different points in its life, it has alway been a division of General Motors, utilizing General Motors manufacturing, design, and marketing.  The brand was retired in 2009 because by that time it was nothing more than a re-badging exercise - putting the Pontiac name and a few styling queues on vehicles shared with other General Motors divisions.  Since it was not selling as well as the versions with other name plates, the brand was retired as an unsupportable expense.  So to get back to the premise of your question, as a manufacturer their quality is no better or worse than any other General Motors products - some assembly plants and car designs were pretty good, others had problems.  Pontiac reflected the overall health of GM over the years.

Why did Chevrolet and Pontiac cars look like each other for so many years?

This was due to the common features that both design teams had access to, and the implementation of a ‘unified’ part sourcing strategy. An example was the carryover of GM parts from Delphi that was transposed into Jeep products, and enabled Jeep to source parts at a cheaper price, than if they needed separate parts that were designed in-house, and needed special tooling to manufcture their particular variation.
