Is the US healthcare system too broken to be fixed?
No! And I have a secret:People and neighborhoods across America are creating solutions and systems in ways that we should celebrate. The doers are doing. The question is whether or not state and national policy makers, health sector leaders and tech industry pays attention. Ideally, we need national leadership that sets the tone, by recognizing that better health lives in our streets, families and homes, not in the hands of industry incumbents and technical experts (although they also hold a piece of the puzzle!). We need healthcare system leaders who doggedly embrace the transformative consequence of a total population health agenda, and we need the nation’s technology and financial talent to work with healthcare providers and public health practitioners to develop a new generation of neighborhood-facing solutions. If you’re a newly minted nurse, doctor, social worker, public health practitioner or nutritionist, you’ve already dedicated yourself to making this country a healthier place. Our next step is to be active listeners and expert collaborators to our neighbors and colleagues, with whom we’ll design a healthier future of our country.
Should I get a physics PhD or go to medical school?
Honestly, although I have no expertise or experience in the matter, I think you should go with physics. Here's the thing; the road to becoming a doctor is far too hard and far too long for it just to be enjoyable. It needs to be something that does fulfill you intellectually and challenge you. You need to really want it. You need to not be able to imagine doing something else with your life - not just be content with it. If you are really passionate about theoretical cosmology then that's what you should do! Don't stop short of pursuing your passion because you think you aren't good enough. My thoughts are that if you start on the physics path and realize you aren't good enough then you can change your mind and pursue a career in medicine. However if you go with medicine I fear you will be settling. You most likely won't turn around and pursue physics. If you don't at least give physics a try then you may end up regretting it forever. It's evident that I'm not qualified enough to give you sound advice on what you're capable of and etc. so you should obviously get more opinions on the matter. Not just from other answers to this question, but I'd recommend you talk to other students at Northwestern who are on both paths - ask them about their experience and ask for their recommendations. Most importantly though, know that you are not as pressed for time as you think you are. You're in college - you have your whole life ahead of you. As stressed as you are, just make sure that you don't rush a decision that will set the path for the rest of your life!Good luck!
How does Predictive analytics help to understand the future?
The Future of Looking ForwardAs if predicting the future with data isn’t business-meets-sci fi enough, the possibilities of predictive analytics are generating buzz. Some projections are as practical as using analytics to identify how market volatility will impact production plans or the way in which car navigation systems can suggest a driver’s preferred restaurants based on time and proximity. Others take a more futuristic outlook, such as using data for predictive policing to pre-empt crime.According to RCR Wireless News, the future of the wireless M2M (machine-to-machine) market is bound up in the future of predictive analytics. The site reported that analyst firm Berg Insight anticipates the next big step in the industry will be to use data from mobile network connections to expand their reach to more customers. The future of using data to predict behavior extends into human services, as well. CITE World explained how the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs and the Dartmouth University Geisel School of Medicine are working to use predictive analytics to identify risk factors in military suicides using an opt-in database of 100,000 veterans and millions of social media posts in a program called the Durkheim Project. It’s easy to see how using data to predict customer and market behavior can be invaluable to businesses. Though far from a crystal ball–InformationWeek is careful to point out that Lithium Technologies’ Wu said predictive analytics can only tell a business what could happen in the future, not what will happen–the forward-looking model could change the way many companies within a number of industries make decisions and get ahead. With a Transparency Market Research report anticipating the market for predictive analytics software to reach $6.5 billion by 2019 — as well as big moves like Amazon’s anticipatory shipping program making waves — one prediction is clear: there’s a big future in using data to predict what’s coming next. What does the VA need to improve in providing services to the US war veterans?
Monitor the behaviors of their doctors better. Mine has been anything but kind. understanding, or ethical since my first visit. Even a complaint to her boss via patient advocacy was worthless.Like paying taxes?Veterans entitled to healthcare by the VA, having to use Medicaid too...After 2 years, my VA psychiatrist said "I think we can both agree, there's nothing the VA offers that can help you. You've got Medicaid, right? Try Community Mental Health: they may be able to help".-Say doc, how about a doctor who listens? In 2015, after my doc's cruel behaviors - feeling they really weren't interested in helping me, I did go to Community. It had been almost a year, and the VA was failing miserably, and I had no other support with numerous trauma - traumatic losses. Community told me to apply for Medicaid, but promised a pro bono therapist. I never heard from them.My VA doc knew this, yet always ignores and - or cuts me off. Literally saying I talk too much - fast (ADHD too). She asked me once if I could ever answer with just a yes or no, a single sentence, instead of always going into some long drawn out explanation. Okay doc; ADHD, overthinker, No Social Support, witness and clean up of gunshot suicide, losing every part of my life... and a fucking supposed mental health professional who has never listened to her patient! Though, she has criticized, scorned, ridiculed, insulted, and belittled me in every visit.I have even told her I intentionally restrict my responses because of how upset she got with me in my first visit. - Technically, it wasn't upset as much as getting out of her chair, walking around her desk, standing over me just two feet away, and making the most ignorant - hateful remark I have ever heard. In a voice just on this side of yelling...It all boils down to they could care less, unless the media catches wind of it: 22-a-day was/is a money saving strategy. The cheapest vet is a dead one: no one investigates a vet's suicide. THE VA INTENTIONALLY DRAGS OUT YOUR TREATMENT, USES "THEIR" VERSIONS OF THERAPY, AND LEADS YOU ON UNTIL YOU ARE HOPELESS ENOUGH TO KILL YOURSELF...To much going on unaccounted for. No offense, but just because your employee is a doctor, does not dictate they act ethically, and no one deserves to be treated so cruelly.A mental health professional should at least have a sliver of compassion somewhere in their body.
How does the VA, determine rating percentages on service connected injuries on military veterans?
I dont understand it, because i know 2 disabled veterans with the same service connected injuries. BUT... were rated with 2 different %s? Does it depend on the examining VA doctor?
