What Is A Book That You Guys Think Should Be On The Ap Literature Book List

So how about that 2009 AP english literature exam?

i think it's so funny how serious they all take it. i loved giving them my cell phone and triple sealing the multiple choice booklet after we were done. and if they knew who any of us were, we'd lose our scores.

the multiple choice was bull. i felt certain about few answers and thought i was going to fail. in alot of cases, so many of the answers would work and it seemed like the correct answer is only a matter of opinion.

after the first essay i got some pride behind me, hopefully my bladder bag don't burst beneath me. Shakesfeare's a homo, and i was confused untill i read the end, "fell like Lucifer", then the underlying pride theme became pretty clear.

the second essay was sweet. i described her relationship as reasonable since thats how she described the apartment. the wind was just a personified antagonist, gave the people something to work agianst.

the third essay: the green light from the Great Gatsby
best symbol in all of literature
easiest ap prompt ive ever done

glad that AP lit bullshit is finally over, all to do now is beat on, boats against the current

What books do you read in AP Literature and Composition?

It definitely varies by school and often by teacher as well. Some of the books that I read for my AP Lit class as a senior in high school were The Chosen by Chaim Potok, The Promise (its sequel), East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad...and there were some plays and short stories mixed in there as well. We were not allowed to read them at our own pace; we were either given specific chapters to read every night or given a deadline to complete a whole section of the book. We didn't have a reading assigment every single night, but when we did, it was about thirty pages a night (maybe about two out of every three nights). So AP Lit can be a lot of work, but ultimately, it depends on your teacher (my teacher was about medium, I think, in the amount of time you had to put in outside of class), and it depends on how fast a reader you are.

AP Book List? Which would you choose?

I have to do a book report on a book from this website. I get to pick my own book and was wondering if you guys have read any of them. Let me know your comments, likes, dislikes, and any other info. Please let me know how long the book(s) was because I don't have much time this summer.

I just want something that is not too long and that is not so boring that I might die. XD

Thanks so much!

Literary Fiction: What are some great coming-of-age books for a high-school senior to read?

One of my favorites is Life of Pi by Yann Martel. I'm actually writing a thesis on it!Pi is great because while it follows the traditional story arch of coming-of-age-stories (adolescent doesn't quite know who he is, adolescent is thrown into a tough situation, adolescent learns about himself), it does so in a way that is empowering to the individual. Because the plot of Pi hinges on the main character changing his own narrative, it encourages the adolescent reader to take a more active role in creating his or her own life story.

Is Alice in Wonderland a book of literary merit? What about Pride and Prejudice?

I am both a former literature major and an Austen fan, as well as a writer. Pride and Prejudice has been established by many literary critics as a book of literary merit. Said merit lies in Austen's expert characterization, good use of plot and great eye for human behavior and heart for conflict, as well as her tremendous humor, spot-on use of irony and sarcasm. Her wit, sometimes mordant, is delicious. So, yeah, this is a book of literary merit as is Sense and Sensibility, and even Emma.

Alice in Wonderland is a classic of children's literature and a definite book of literary merit. It showcases Lewis Carroll's talent for finding the sublime in the mundane and elevating nonsense to an art form. The case could even be argued that it is one of the first fantasy novels. It is also a fantastic (pun intended) study in linguistics and the ambiguity and sometimes arbitrary nature of expression.

Other books of literary merit: Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations. Melville's Moby Dick (though I find it quite boring). The Scarlet Letter; To Kill A Mockingbird; Heart of Darkness; A Confederacy of Dunces; The Kite Runner (being more modern does not make a book less worthy). The Handmaid's Tale; Things Fall Apart; Brave New World; As I Lay Dying; The Sound and The Fury (almost anything by Faulkner). The Sun Also Rises; The Sound of Waves; A Lesson Before Dying; Beloved; Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle Stop Cafe; How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents; Huckleberry Finn; The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe; One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Has Stephen King written any books that are considered "Great Literature"?

Right now most critics consider him a Pop Culture author. He even described himself as the "burger and large fries" of literature.

But remember this, when Shakespeare was still alive, the critics considered him a fad and a pop culture writer much like Stephen King. He never became an author of great literature until after is death.

I'm sure in the future King will be considered great literature but as of now, I would stick with a classic author. Of course, you should ask your teacher about it. Bring your evidence and maybe your teacher will be impressed by your enthusiasm.

If not, I think H.G. Wells or Jules Verne will be right up your alley.
