What does Up to 4800 x 1200 dpi8 mean when buying a printer?

Your printer can print 4,800 dots per inch (dpi) going left to right on a page and 1,200 dots per inch going up to down on the page, my friend.

The 8 after dpi is referring you to point 8 below, which states:

"Resolution may vary based on printer driver setting. Color ink droplets can be placed with a horizontal pitch of 1/4800 inch at minimum."

What is the difference between 2400 X 600 resolution and 1200 X 1200 resolution in laser printers?

Resolution is based on two factors: the dots per horizontal and per vertical inch. The resolution is generally noted in dpi, dots per square inch. FastRes 1200, is used to create a ‘1200 dpi like’ resolution. What it actually does is use 2400 dots for the horizontal direction and 600 for the vertical. So in answer to your question 1200x1200 will yield a better output.

Personally I wouldn't purchase either of those machines. I would spend a little more and get the HP LaserJet P2015dn Printer for $350.00. It has the same features but will be less money to operate.

The brother machines require a seperate toner and drum. Approximately every 3 toners (21K yield total) you will need to install a drum and that is a best case scenario. The cost for the supplies will be $480 or so. The hp replaces both drum and cartridge at the same time (21K yield total) will cost about $430. In less than 50K prints you will have recouped the extra money spent for the HP. At 100K prints you will have saved $100. It just gets better from there.

Regarding ink costs, the HP brand higher-capacity inks for this printer (they are listed under one of the tabs (= "Cartridges") on the first link above - the HP product info page) - may seem expensive (about $30/ per black cartridge and $18/for each color cartridge) but they do offer cheaper lower-yield ones (about $10-$12/cartridge) (the higher-capacity ones are a better deal in the long run).

Keep in mind that you could also save money by purchasing high-yield remanufactured cartridges for this printer:
