What could make my computer go slower and get stuck?
1) not enough RAM, possibility: moderate. running lots of programs will slow your computer down as the RAM fills up in processing 2) video card too old/slow/small. Possibility: moderate. if your video card meets the min specs of the games, that's okay, but still not great. you really should have a vid card that meets and/or exceeds the RECOMMENDED specs of the game. Also, your drivers may be old. check windows updates to see if there's a new driver available under the hardware category (i think you have to do a customizable update to review the categories and choose this option). 3) Front Side Bus is too slow. Possibility: low. if your computer is older, your bus speeds are going to be lower. this means that games which rely on faster movement of data are going to run slower. 4) heating issues. Probability: low to moderate. a computer is made to operate at certain temperature ranges. exceeding these ranges is harmful to your computer and can slow it down over time. too much over heating will shut your computer down. 5) hard drive rotation speed too slow. Probability: low. the standard in hard drive rotation speed has been greater than 5400 rpm for a long time. chances are, you've got a 7200 rpm HD, but you might check just to make sure. 6) too much shiza on your comp, and too many programs running at the same time. Probability: medium to high. most people run ALOT of stuff on their computer at the same time without even knowing it. getting more RAM could help with this, or minimize the number of programs running in the background. Do you really need things like aim, yahoo, msn, skype, WMP, winamp, etc running in the background while you play a game? probably not, so exit those unneeded programs to maximize performance for programs you ARE using. On top of checking these items, i would do the standard maintenance things like update your virus defs (you can't KNOW it's not a virus, new ones come out all the time) and scan your comp, Run a spyware detector/remover (i like adaware, personally), defrag your hard drive, error check the hard drive, and download/install windows updates (including optional updates). you should get in the habit of doing those simple tasks every one to two months, except windows updates, do that every month.

also the background is bright white and i can open control panel but cant do anything on it it makes explorer.exe crash i ran norton 360 and it didn't pick up any virus or spy/malware ok i can stop the timer by typing shutdown -a in run but it just stops and opens a second one which is also blank and i cant end it or the process because it says "process cannot be shutdown because it is vital to windows" please help me!

it keeps asking me to kill pages, and I'm afraid it's close to breaking. I don't know a lot about computers but it's a PC and it's a compac laptop. there's a couple of pausible reasons why it's doing this, one could be it has a major bug and needs to be cleaned, not that I know how to. it's not because of memory, i've only used like 30 percent of the drives memory. please help me speed it up, what can I use to clean it??
