I just bought a saxophone and I was wondering, if there is a pop song hack like the four chords songs on the piano and guitar? What's the easiest way to play most of the pop songs on the saxophone?
Wind instruments like brass and woodwinds don't have conveniently laid out patterns like a piano or guitar. Compounding the problem is the fact that the saxophone family of instruments are not keyed in unison with other instruments. so there really is no hack similar to the guitar. Further complicating the issue is that different key scales vary in the degree of difficulty to master. The C scale on a saxophone is typically the easiest but on a tenor that would put you into the key of b flat and the key of e flat on an alto saxophone; neither of these are popular keys on pop music precisely because the easiest keys to play in for a guitar (the most popular pop music instrument on the planet) is the key of E and A. So what to do? To become a good player of a wind instrument one needs to know their scales cold (and their related arpeggios). The challenge will be that fact that there are so many scales to learn. If you try and cheat you will simply be short changing yourself. The scales you should start with are:MajorMelodic minorHarmonic minorChromaticAt first this will seem dreadfully boring (and frankly it is). However it will yield dramatic results over time and put you far ahead of your lazier colleagues. When I was playing I started out by learning all of them. I would build a routine of using scales and and their related arpeggios as a "lip loosening" exercise at the start of practice (I settled on the Major and Melodic minor you might find other scales more useful to add in depending on the style of music you play). This gives you 25 scales to rip though (be sure to add chromatic) and you can do it in about 10 - 15 minutes after you have memorized them depending on your speed. Now once you become proficient you can start to sort out the scales by the most popular keys and branch out into the various modes in those keys. The point is you will need to become comfortable with drilling in order to become a good wind player. Every instrument has these choke points but wind players don't have the luxury of systematic patterns like a guitar. Don't get me wrong, you will start to recognize patterns, but transposing will not be simply a matter of playing the same pattern two frets up the neck.
