What Is A Nice Day Trip From London Uk

What's a good day trip from London, for an American?

Oh my what a nice thing to think about, especially when the weather is fine, like today. First off transport - for a day trip from London the train is usually your best bet - there are probably hundreds of nice places you can get to easily and with suburban trains you get a cheap day return on the day with no need to book and they are relaxed about things like which exact route you take. Not only does this avoid all the hassle of driving out of London but you can enjoy a pint or two. Then what should you be visiting - well obviously that is going to depend on you but the proper day out should include some of: beautiful countryside, a pub lunch, a visit to a castle or stately home, a cream tea, a bit of a walk, coastal views, exploring a historic town or village, a picnic, another pub.A few options (all in Kent because I am biased and don’t have all week) Whitstable (do try the oysters), Chatham (for the dockyard) & Upnor (for the pubs), Canterbury (lovely town & pubs as well as the Cathedral), Margate (try the Lifeboat pub as well as the Turner Contemporary), Ightham (a bit tricky by train but Ightham Mote is one place you should visit before going back to the USA and the Old House pub is worth a pilgrimage), Lullingstone/Eynsford (Roman villa, two castles, lovely little village, a valley so beautiful they diverted the M25), Penshurst (maybe take the train to Leigh, very nice walk to Penshurst for pub lunch, visit Penshurst Place and take bus to Penshurst station), Folkestone (the best place for a fossil collecting day out from London, the Triennial art exhibition, and fish).

What all should I do on a 2 day London trip? How good are the hop on hop off buses? Will they be cheaper than using the Underground?

If money is no option to you, then by all means purchase a hop on hop off ticket, but as you’re only visiting for 2 days I doubt you will get much use out of it if you truly want to make the most of your trip. These tickets are overpriced, and in my opinion a little bland as they are focused on giving you the classic tourist package. If you are unsure where to go and what to see, then I suppose these buses would be a good starting place to get a feel for London, but with a little internet research I think you could get a similar idea. After a while, these buses would get repetitive, there’d be a lot of waiting around and compromising for time.To make the most of 2 days, I would plan several places of interest within central London and preferably walk to as many as I could to not only see more of London along the way, but also not have to waste time waiting and boarding transport (some stations can add so many minutes onto journey times with their complicated ‘crowd control’ routes). To travel around it would be best to get an oyster card for £5 and top it up with about £15. An unlimited day of travelling within zone 1 with an oyster card costs £6.80, which would enable you to travel to most places of interest. Oyster cards are technically refundable so you should get your £5 back when you leave, but I’ve never tried this.Popular places to see/visit, which I’ve tried to group by location:Big Ben (but it is being renovated at the moment, so looks kinda ugly) + Westminster Bridge + London Eye + Westminster AbbeyTower of London + Tower BridgeLeicester Square + Chinatown + Covent Garden + Piccadilly CircusSt Paul’s cathedralOxford Street + Carnaby StreetTrafalgar Square + National Gallery + Horse Guards ParadeNatural History Museum + Science Museum + Victoria and Albert Museum (these are really time consuming so only go if you’re interested)Buckingham PalaceCamden Market + Camden LockBorough Market + The Shard (if you want to take nice pictures)

If you are a foodie, then Bray near Maidenhead, where The Fat Duck, recently the best resto in the world, and the Waterside Inn, nestle next to the River Thameshttp://www.dine-online.co.uk/mic....The dreaming spires of Oxford, and the Pitt Rivers Museum, are just an hour from Paddington Station, Cambridge is the same from Liverpool street. Dickens Country is North Kent, Rochester and Chatham, and is preparing for his bicentennial in 2012http://www.visitkent.co.uk/explo...Whitstable, especially famous for it's seafood and oysters, is a delightful town and not far from England's religious capital Canterbury http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whi...Brighton is definitely worth a trip, check the narrow Lanes for jewellery and the funkier craft-centred North Lanes, but don't forget Hove where the British film industry started in 1897http://www.sussexfilm.co.uk/hist...Probably the most unusual and the most English place you can visit is Lewes, east of Brighton, famous for witchcraft, folk music and dark histories In the autumn it is part of the distinctive Sussex bonfire societieshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sus...Battle, where William the Conqueror defeated King Harold is nearbyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bat... and has direct trains from London

What should I do in my two day trip to London?

Two days in London is not a very long, you will have to walk fast if you want to do things in the city. I advise you to do one day around the Thames (the city, the london Bridge, and the docks) and the other day around Soho and Covent Garden. If you have time left, go to Camden Town, it is such a nice place to go !!! If you want to do something different, have a look on the internet to startups that offer the opportunity to visit the city with local (Vayable, BubbleGlobe, Trip4real, etc). You can for instance, discover London over a drink with a local ;)
