I can only speak for me, and what seems to be working is to go through the fourth step in any program of 12 steps, meaning to sit down and take an inventory of the places  I lie, or  act big in order to impress, or seem cooler.It is very enlightening to notice where I play small just to not attract attention, envy, or for fear of being disliked.A weak self-image is linked to not believing in the good we have in us. And there is good in us, we just need to do the work of sorting through and finding it.When we are able to surrender the fear that comes from feeling like we are not good enough, when we can turn it over, so to speak, to a higher power, then suddenly we are no longer alone, we have help.So for me what works is to pray, and to be conscious of where my actions come from, to recognize where I am acting to pretend I am less than I am so that I get something out of that... Because there is certainly a payoff in playing small... it is safer... but not necessarily wise.
