What Is A Suite In Music Terms

What is the Baroque Suite? (music class)?

in my book it says "a group of dances, usually in the same key, with each piece in the binary form or the ternary form" and the the 4 standard dances are allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue. I dont understnad this... by dance do they mean like the body-movement dance? or is there some kind of musical dance... my book doesnt really describe it. and would the "suite" be like just the name given to those 4 types?

In classical Music what makes a composition a concerto, suite, overture, sonata, opus or symphony?

This is a big question!

Basically what makes a classical piece a concerto, suite etc. has to do with either the instrumentation, or the form.

I'll go down the list:

Concerto: Often features one soloist (on violin, bassoon, marimba, you name it) who is supported by the orchestra, though there can be more than one person featured (as in a concerto grosso or Beethoven's Triple Concerto). The two (soloist and tutti) play off of each other creating difference in timbre.

Suite: More to do with the form of the piece. A suite can be written for orchestra, chamber setting, solo instrument. It is composed of several movements, each of which portray a different setting, story, or stylized dance (Allemande, Courante, Gigue ect)

Overture: This is also a form. Usually it denotes a slow introduction followed by a faster Allegro section (originally the intro would have a certain double-dotted unison rhythm, and the Allegro would be imitative in style). Could also simply be an Overture to a large work, such as an opera or musical.. In this case it might be a medley of themes.

Sonata: Originally, this simply meant "sounded," which indicated that it was any piece played on an instrument. Now, it has developed into a multi- or single- movement work implying that the "sonata-allegro" form is used. Sonata-allegro form is, briefly, Exposition-Development-Recap with some smaller sub-divisions.

Opus: A grouping of a composers works.

Symphony: Like the sonata, it was originally just a piece that was played by a large group of organized instruments (strings, winds, percussion maybe). Haydn expanded on this greatly and created the classical symphonic form that we are more familiar with today. Sometimes 3 movements, sometimes 4, there are often these elements:

I: Sonata-Allegro form
II: Slower movement - maybe ABA form, maybe theme and variations
III: Scherzo and trio, or Minuet and trio
IV: Rondo (ABACA), another SA possibly

But the variations composers have made on these basic forms are endless!

What is considered a "Suite" in a soundtrack?

I have been listening to the last airbender soundtrack from M. Night. It was a bad movie but the music is amazing. Can anybody tell me what a "Airbender Suite" is? Is it something that plays along the credits, or is it something that is a mixture of all the songs that are not enough to be its own track? If anybody has seen the movie you know Aangs courtyard battle sence? I am trying to find what song plays at that moment. I own the whole soundtrack. I just seemed to miss it. Thank you.

What does commercially successful mean in terms of music?

Commercially successful means only one thing in the music business. The other answers here will not mention this.Commercially successful means only one thing:that the money invested into a performer has been completely paid back through royalties via consistent album sales. There is no more money owing back to the record company who fronted the investment money in the first place. All the famous performers you can think of (the ‘recording artist’ title is incorrect since they don’t create on solely on their own) are not considered ‘commercially successful’ until all the money spent on them has been paid back. This is the only measurement of success in the music business.Fame level, legacy, name, etc. has nothing to do with commercial success. There are lots of famous people who are selling albums, but they don’t get a penny of it until all expenditures are recouped through album or single sales royalties first. These people live off record company money only.

Is music psychology a profession or just a term?

I do not know for certain, but music therapy for emotionally or otherwise challenged people is definitely a thing, so perhaps music psychology is as well.In addition to that, there are a lot of neuroscientists exploring the working of the brain through studying how music works in our brains. Oliver Sachs was a pioneer in this realm, and Daniel J. Levitin has made impressive discoveries about neuroscience and cognition through his studies of how the brain and music interact. So there is definitely a broad field of study about how and why music is important to people and how this fact can be used to understand and treat people with various neurological and psychological disorders. I am not sure it just has one name though.
