Why is the abacus considered the very first computer?

So a computer is not just the machine you have in front of you, but it is anything that can compute. An abacus was the first nonhuman computer, so it is often considered the first computer.

The smallest unit of information possible is a called a "bit". It can take on one of two values, which can be interpreted a "true" and "false", or "yes" and "no", or more commonly "1" or "0".
To represent more complex forms of information, such as integers, real numbers, and text, we need to have a collection of bits. I've heard tales of some early computer scientists advocating a "trinary" system, using circuits that can hold 3 distinct states. Supposedly it had certain advantages over binary systems, but these were overshadowed by the disadvantages, and it never caught on.
