Why is the abacus considered the very first computer?
Take any verb. Add "er" to the end of it. You now have a noun which means "someone or something that does the verb". So a computer is not just the machine you have in front of you, but it is anything that can compute. An abacus was the first nonhuman computer, so it is often considered the first computer.

What is the relation of binary number system with computers?
The smallest unit of information possible is a called a "bit". It can take on one of two values, which can be interpreted a "true" and "false", or "yes" and "no", or more commonly "1" or "0". To represent more complex forms of information, such as integers, real numbers, and text, we need to have a collection of bits. A "Byte" is a collection of 8-bits, and can take on 256 different states, so we can think of it as representing the numbers 0 through 255. If we write out each of these values in binary, we can see that each binary digit corresponds to one of the bits in our byte. Computers store information in memory using "flip-flops", which are built with very tiny transistors. A flip-flop can have either a hi voltage state or a low voltage state, so it can hold 1 bit worth of information. This is where the connection between computers and binary comes from. I've heard tales of some early computer scientists advocating a "trinary" system, using circuits that can hold 3 distinct states. Supposedly it had certain advantages over binary systems, but these were overshadowed by the disadvantages, and it never caught on.

Put simply: Abacus is China tech for the rest of the world. We want to show you what’s happening inside China, and why. We’re focusing on consumer tech, because I think it’s fun -- and I don’t think enough people are focusing on that. And I want to focus on what matters to you -- and things you can see, feel, touch and use are more useful (in my mind) to the average consumer.To be clear, we won’t be a cheerleader. I’m not here to say everything happening in China tech is great and wonderful. Tech in general is so powerful. It has the power to change the world for better or worse. China is no different in that sense. But it’s also so different to the rest of the world, and that’s why Abacus is here.
